The game opened with Fredericktown kicking to Perryville. On the Buc's first play from scrimmage, using a single wing for the first time, Bob Hoffman gave the spectators one of their biggest football thrills in years by running around left end and going 70 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was missed. The lead was short-lived however, as Fred- ericktown scored a T.D. and extra point after a return drive. The Black Cats scored two more times in the last half and held the Pirates scoreless, defeating them 21-6. CRYSTAL CITY Crystal City played host to the Perryville team in the second game of the season. The Pirates entered the scoring column first with Smith taking a Hoffman pass on the 15 and fighting his way into the end zone. The extra point was missed. Crystal scored a few minutes later and also missed the extra point. In the second quarter Smith again took a long pass and advanced to the two yard line. Pirate fullback Cherry scored off right guard. The extra point was again no good. Crystal tied the game a few minutes before the half by scoring and missing the try for the extra point. Crystal scored two more T.D.'s and missed both extra points for a 24-12 lead. The Pirates came within striking range by scoring once more, this time on a pass from Hoffman to Schulte. Hoffman threw three touchdown passes and Smith scored three times to lead the attack. Good line play was turned in by Merlin Sandler, Lynn Conrad and Dale Lintner. Final score Perryville 38, Flat River 0. Time and hour run through the roughest day., STE. GENEVIEVE The Ste. Genevieve Dragons provided the opposition in the sixth straight confer- ence game for the P.H.S. boys. After a scoreless first quarter McAtee took a short pass from Hoffman and scored standing up. Boxdorfer kicked the extra point. Later in the same quarter Hoffman ran 10 yards for a T.D. after Schulte had set up the score with a pass interception. Bob Hoffman again sparked the Pirate offense as he averaged 7 yards per carry and scored both Perryville touchdowns. These games, often as exciting as a professional contest, provide recreation for those who wish to participate and entertainment for the rest of the stu- dents. There is a well-rounded program for both boys and girls, each on their separate days, consisting of volleyball and basketball. Those Who take part do so voluntarily but there is always a large number of eager students and no one is left out. No matter how insignificant these contests may seem, those participating play with all-out enthusiasm and much is gained in the way of learning the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship as well as in the exercise which is derived before TIME forces the games to stop. In the boys basketball tourney, six teams participated with each team playing every other team one time. The winning team was captained by Lloyd Fiehler and was undefeated. A volleyball tournament was held in the Spring with eight teams play- ing. The tournament Was played on a one loss elimination system with the ultimate winners being a varsity team captained by Paul Smith. They achieved the winners spot by defeating an under-classmen team, an F.F.A. team and a Senior boys team in that order. Other members of the team were: Dale Lintner, Bob Hoffman, Harold Geile, Allen Roth, George Hand, Bob McAtee and Howard Thilenius. In the girls' program, in which only class teams participate, the Soph- omores distinguished themselves as the best athletes by winning both the volley- ball and basketball tournaments.
