Our effort to collect the faces and events of your school year 1952-53 and all between the covers of one little book, The Tuba. Our problem, as usual, was to select a theme as a sort of inspiration to tie the book together. As usual, also, when themes are suggested there are either none or too many. Our choice, as you see, is STAIRWAY TO THE STARS and our motto Aim high and hold your aim is closely linked. What does it require to edit a book? Hours of selling sandwiches, standing in the cold and not seeing the games, contacting business places: taking pictures, some over and over, and when the sun is out finding that somebody is absent, checking and rechecking names, writing and then find- ing that the results are unsatisfactory, to say nothing of trying to be original. Then We remember that nothing Worhwhile happens by chance. So here it is - The Tuba of 1953. Accepting, we seniors arrived on the steamboat Prom and docked among the willows on the banks of the Mis- sissippi. As we stepped from the gang plank and received our programs we were overwhelmed with the enchant- ment the scene disclosed. The southern setting was carried out in cotton fields and in a garden complete with a brick walk bordered with flowers. Calvin Eggers strolled on the porch of the great colonial home to welcome the guests down south. Glen Fairchild re- sponded for the seniors with Southern Hospitality, and to add atmosphere to the setting, Clara Mae Coffelt sang Carry Me Back To Old Virginia.
