Paula and Linda were appointed head cheerleaders by Cloys Webb, and on their shoulders lay the responsibility of molding the girls into a top rate organization. Immediately after election the girls started hav- ing practice sessions, and they continued practice until it was time to go to camp. While at camp, they brought honor to Perryton by winning two second place awards for competitive yells. Upon returning home they had one-hour practice sessions every day until school started and the time for the first pep rally and ball game arrived. Everywhere we go people want to know who we are so we tell them. Earmuffs were a necessity for a cold game against Levelland. Just learning yells wasn ' t the only thing with which the cheerleaders had to deal; there was also the problem of designing and getting a uniform ready, and the late arrival of megaphones and pom poms. Yet as they performed, it was not the costumes or the organization that was ad- mired, but the shining spirit which drove them on. Paula Wright and Diane Loftin were a big.part of the cheerleading campaign to gather wood for the annual bonfire. Threatening but not falling during the first half, the rain began to pour down shortly after the third quarter began. Vision on the field became difficult, and fans went scurry- ing to their cars or other shel- ter. The Rangers had a tremendous task in holding the big Dumas forward wall, which aver- aged 208 pounds from end to end, but managed to hold them at a 36-7 win. ABSENT: David Rankin, Helen Matthews, Loretta Matthews. Mentally retailed children resemble normal children more than they differ from them. They have the same needs - love, acceptance, encouragement, warmth, and a chance to grow spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally. This chance was given to the retarted children of Perryton this year when a special education class was added to the Perryton school system. The trainable class attends school three hours each morning. The essential objec- tives of this class are social adjustment, self care, and economic usefulness. These three areas include safety, physical training, music, language develop- ment and communication. Most of them are making academic progress in reading, writing, and are well-adjusted to school; and they are growing in self- assurance, independence, self-help, and self-respect. 192 Index Adcock, Freddie -- Agee , Wayne Agler, Mike Akin, Rex Aldred, Adrian Alexander , Joan - - Alexander, Reggie - Allison, James Amrine, Charles - - ssAftdersofi , Jim Anderson, Judy Armstrong , Pat Armstrong, Reta - - Atchison, Charles - Atchison , Sharon 121.
