r fH GENEALOGY 976. 02 P SPHS 1962 Through the years the Ranger has been the lymbol of the school that we so proudly love. Yet seldom do we realize that the Ranger represents P. H, S. as Perryton High School represents only one of the many free schools in America. As we so patriotically support our school, we also support free education, one of the many freedoms of our nation. With this thought we have chosen as our theme America, our heritage, our home land. In our nation ' s creed ii states that the government is of the pe ople, Dy the people, and for the people; but we wonder, who are the people? Today we fondly say we are the Ran- gers; tomorrow we will say we are the people - the citizens of America. We will have homes blest with peace, with love, without fears, for this is the heritage we ' ve kept through the years. Lois Carol Williams Editor J anaer 96Z J erry on J-fi i ScAoo J err on, Uexas ' ij ' rieoe L)cnmidi For the fourth consecutive year Perryton High School has been host to a foreign exchange student who came through the International Christian Youth Organization. Friede Schmidt arrived in Perryton from Munster, Germany, in early August. While in Perryton High School, Friede has taken an active part in many activities. She has been elected as an honorary member of both the Student Council and National Honor Society. We, as a school, have been very lucky to have received a girl of such versatile ability and friendly personality as Friede. We are proud that you, Friede Schmidt, are a Ranger. With September came the back-to-school move- ment. Activities started with the first day of school and never slackened through the nine months at PHS, Classes, sports, socials, and clubs kept students busy. New and better things were to come from a student body which was well tuned to the school song: Hail, Perryton Rangers. Hats off to you. Ever you ' ll find us loyal and true. Firm and undaunted, always we ' ll be. Hail to the school we love; Here ' s a toast to thee. A, . _ (V-ft— ■ What! Only THREE solids this year? Along with other activities, comes studying also — Grant, stop shakin; the ladder. -f- BONFIRE STILL PLANNED DESPITE WOOD BURNING: Despite a premature burning by some mis- guided souls with warped sense of humor, a large pile of fire wood was in place for a bonfire Thursday night. Some rather stupid individuals with no respect for the rights of others set fire to the previously gathered wood Monday night. (Ochiltree County Herald, October 26, 1961) JLMt Well now, Mr. Zollar - it ' s like this ... At the beginning of the football game each Friday Night,, the audience ' s attention is centered on Blaze, our Ranger mascot ridden by Joe D. New- man, who together with the cheerleaders lead the Rangers onto the field. Throughout the many school years, Perryton High has gained the title of having great school spirit. This year above all it has been worthy of this name. Enthusiastic students have joined together to make this year a finer and more complete year for P.H.S. ,-m - — I Still say I ' m proud to be a RANGER ! YELL, ye Rangers, YELL! ' ■ wt r H K.,aA ' iM m v l m Hl ' vJ ' mm Whether we win or whether we lose we ' re RANGERS just the same. In order to build stronger school spirit during football season a pep rally was held preceeding each Friday night game. The cheerleaders de- voted much time and effort to planning new and different skits. The students and the pep band cheered our team to victory. Cheerleaders work hard to plan posters for games. Best facility cheerleaders honored with chance to ring victory bell at first conference game. Mr. Dick Bynum drives the Greyhound bus which carries the Rangers to victory. ll ■ in r1 i He done his best but it wasn ' t good enough. Ranger tc _: ball practice was encouraged by short pep rallies on the practice field. 10 Ranger football season draws near an end with the falling snow on the victory bell. With the cold weather the yelling at football games gets louder and louder. Along with football season comes one of the greatest honors which can be bestowed upon a girl. This honor is football queen. Penny Price was crowned by Captain Terry McWhorter to be the football queen of 1962. Penny ' s attendents were Senior - Ann Acker, Junior - Shelia Wylie, Sopho- more - Karen Lewis. The Queen ' s Court consisted of Karen Lewis escorted by Benny Conley, Freddie Lewis, Co-Captain Don Wagner, Queen Penny Price, Co-Captain Terry McWhorter, Danny Witt escorting Ann Acker, and Johnny Leicht escorting Shelia Wylie. Favorite sounds of music around P. H. S. come from the High School Stage Band. Mr. Tom Knightion directs this group which has won first place ratings at both Canyon and Amarillo. Their performances are high- lighted by their vocalist, Jeannie Huston. A familiar sight to students is the Lecture Look of Mr. Zoller seen giving a lecture following a school assembly. The West Texas State Choir starts off the Christmas season by presenting P. H. S. with a musical program. ■ - • • ■4. f u,, , a •■ , ■ 7 , 1 I J t • li- A modern Christmas tree of silver aluminum radiates the Christmas spirit shown by the Home Eco nomics Department. Teresa Odom is the victim of the first snowball of the year. Standing by are onlookers who can ' t wait to throw number two, three, four, five, six, etc., etc One highlight of each year Is the presentation of the Senior Play. As practice began, lines of Blythe Spirit were heard through the school. Performance night found Madam Arcarti ready to communicate with the mystic beyond causing chaos in the Condomine household. Charles Condomine ' s first wife, Elvira, came to live with him and while there became desirous that they be spiritually reunited. While trying to kill Charles, she accidently killed his second wife, Ruth, who materialized while Madam Arcarti was trying to dematerialize Elvira. Cli- maxing the play, Edith, the maid, was found to be a natural and through her help the two Mrs. Condomines were sent back to the other side. When all was over the Seniors were exuberant but a little saddened because another event of their year had come to an end. Ticket sales began early for Blythe Spirit Let me go, I ' ll send them back. One of the last few in captivity Much enthusiasm was shown by both cheerleaders and students as the Rangers pushed on through a victorious basketball season. Hex hats were worn to Hex the Bobcats when the Rangers played Childress, and a twirp date so- ial was given following one of the seasonal games. This and the fact that students rushed onto the court following every game to congratulate the boys gave visit- ing teams a view of real school spirit. HEX the Bobcats! II Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho. . . The Rangers prepare to bring home another vic- tory to PHS. 15 I WBM m ' y After the victorious Bi-district game, the merchants of Perryton chartered three buses for the students of PHS to at- tend the Regional Tournament in Lubbock. During the shon stop at Amarillo Bus Terminal many scanned the papers to find clippings of their team. Making it into the finals the Rangers fell short of State by two points, nevertheless the fans were proud of the team and especially Harry Drake who was named to the All-Tournament team. r Many changes come imo the daily routine around P. H. S, , for throughout the year there is much excitement aroused in the various activities. School trips create talk and excitement for weeks before and after the trip. Perhaps a dif- ferent kind of talk is aroused through scholastic projects. Many spend hours working on research in the library, and all must show much class participation. Few idle min- utes are found during study periods. The whole day flies by with the fun and enjoyment of learning with friends, and with the end comes the beginning of a new day. MARY JO WILLIAMS Dependable, capable, intelligent, willing are only a few of the words which describe Miss PHS, selected in the all-school election. Senior Mary Jo Williams is deserving of this honor because of her love of our school which she has shown in every way. She is a capable leader, a willing follower, and is dependable in every assignment, along with being an honor student. JliCr. 70 .S. JOHNNY LEICHT Mr. PHS, a great honor awarded to a seniot student of Perryton High School, was chosen in the an- nual all-school election. The recipient of this award was Johnny Leicht, a true Ranger in all respects. He is an active member of both the athletic and music departments of the school. His friendly person- ality and smile have made Johnny a favorite among all who know him. fSs Jooibaff 2 ueen 11 PENNY PRICE Among the highlights of every school year is the selection and coronation of the Football Queen. This ear ' s honor was bestowed upon Miss Penny Price, elected by the Ranger Football Team. She was presented and crowned Queen in a formal ceremony of beauty and simplicity, preceeding the pep rally over wh ' .:h she reigned. Attending the Queen during her reign was a lovely representative from each class. T - four young ladies were again presented as reigning beauties preceeding the Homecoming Game. 23 JKosi Jjeauiiful — LOU CAROL SAIED Most Beautiful is a dual honor in P.H.S. because nominees are first elected by the student body then portraits are sent to celebrities who have graciously consente d to judge the contest. This year we were honored to have Troy Donahue choose the Most Beautiful Girl of P. H. S. 24 JKosl Jianosome — TERRY McWHORTER Most Handsome, who is elected in the same manner as Most Beautiful, is an honor to a boy of P. H. S. The identity of the recipient of these honors is kept secret until the arrival of the Ranger Annual. Connie Stevens congratulates the Most Handsome boy of P. H.S. 25 26 27 Senior Jaooriies Elected by the Senior Class are their favorites Gay Wagner and Charles Alexander seen ad- miring the tumbleweed snowman. Gay, only five feet tall, is one of Perryton High School ' s most accomplished musicians. Charlie Red, as Charles is known to his classmates, might well be called Mr. School Spirit as he is very active in boosting the spirit in every way. c3 ' enior l(j)£o s l9)fj. JO JOHN ERICKSON JOHNNY LEICHT John Erickson has come to be one of the best known students in PHS during his four years of high school. Each of his honors is a re- sult of his fine leadership ability. John has proved this through his outstanding works as President of the Student Council. Without John ' s strong voice to cheer the teams on and his banjo to make bus trips more fun, the PHS spirit might not have had the same sup- port. John also shows his talents with the various organizations in the PHS music and speech depart- ments. Because of her vivacious and friendly personality, Lois Carol Williams has become a well liked student at PHS. During four years of high school, Lois has shown many versatile qualities. She led the Ranger Marching Band as a twirler and played oboe during concert season. As editor of the Ranger annual Lois has shown fine leadership ability and initative to stay with a job until it was done. PHS has been lucky to have Lois and other dedicated students like she. LOIS CAROL WILLIAMS Perryton High School ' s choice for Mr. PHS is truly one apropos to the class of 1962. Johnny Leicht has been a leader of not only his class but his high school. He has been a member of the Ranger foot- ball and track teams, an officer for his class each year of his nigh school career, has been elected Wao ' s Who three of the four years, as well as being an honor i;adent and a member of the National Honor So- ciety. Johnny is truly deserving of the title Mr. PHS for he has worked for the betterment of his school and has represented his school as a true Ranger. 29 J . ies unior .jrauori Athletics are the main activities of the Junior Favorites seen decorating the El Rancho. Big James Fountain is a highly praised tackle on the Ranger football team and a Ranger track star. Joan Reiswig, one of the most vivacious girls in school, plays forward for the Rangerettes and is a twirler for the Ranger Band. These favorites were elected by popular vote of the Junior class. 30 J unior WAo s l9)£i o PAULA WRIGHT LINDA CAMPBELL An outstanding student in all respects who has proved a great asset to PHS is Scott Sanford. He has served as vice-president and is now serving as Junior Class President. While being an active member of the National Honor Society, he has also participated in the athletic and music depart- ments of PHS. Last year Scott was honored by being named to the Athletic-Scholastic Honor Roll of PHS. SCOTT SANFORD Paula Wright is one of the most active girls in P. H. S. , participa- ting in almost every activity. The activity which takes most of her time is fulfilling her job. Paula holds the office of Historian in F. H. A. She is active in F. T. A. , Choir, and National Honor Soci- ety. Honors which she received this year are Most Friendly, Who ' s Who, and Best Citizen. Throughout her years in P. H. S. Linda Campbell has shown friend- ship to all. Her pleasing person- ality has endeared her to the stu- dents and faculty. Her Freshman year she served as class secretary- treasmer. Also in her freshman year Linda was chosen class favor- ite. Her sophomore year she was selected to Who ' s Who. This year Linda was honored by being elected a cheerleader. She takes an ac- tive part in National Honor Society and Choir. 31 (bopni omore 9c ' avoriies Learning the value of books are Sophomore Favorites, Cecilia Leicht and Gary Newcomb, two of P.H.S. ' s busiest students. Mary Cecilia is active in many school organizations as well as being twirler for the Ranger Band. Gary played a big part on this year ' s football team and will be seeing action during track season. Congratulations, Cecilia and Gary, in your first year at Perryton High School. r) Op li omore JfjJAo ' s WAi o MIKE POWELL BOB McCUTCHEON y 1 f — ' — , Mike Powell, one of the top honor students of the Sophomore Class, is always found ready to lend a helping hand to anyone coming his way. Serving as vice- president of the Freshman Class last year, he was prepared to take responsibilities as president of the Sophomore Class. This year, Mike has taken part in various activities of PHS including B team football, track, and singing bass in the A Cappella Choir. One can truthfully say that he is, and will be an asset to any school. Showing her talents in many ways, April Voiles has made an excellent record. Being the Sophomore hold over member of the Student Council, April has participated actively as treasurer of the organization. She has been an invaluable member of the music department and was honored by be- ing elected Choir Sweetheart Nomi- nee. April has truly become an ac- tive part of Perry ton High School. APRIL VOILES Courteous, dependable, and intelligent would best describe Bob McCutcheon whose quick dr)- hu- mor has made him well known to all his classmates. An active member of both the Ranger basket- ball and football B teams. Bob is also an excellent student. He shows outstanding speech ability and excels in debate. Because of his great capabiliiv, great things are expected from Bob. 33 Mancf Swee Aear Cjnoi ' r ( Jwee near Elected by the Ranger Choir are five lovely young ladies. All three groups have made outstanding achievements as they participated in contests, tours and concerts. One of the greatest achievements being the tour the choirs took through the Class AAA schools. To make this tour possible a great deal of time and work from each choir member was necessary. Some of the projects were selling banners for cars, a rummage sale and a sale of magazines. A warm welcome was shown by the choirs of the schools and the Perryton High School choir enjoyed it very much. A tour through Carlsbad Caverns was also taken. With fine choir directors like Mr. Webb and Mi. Mathers the choirs will continue to gain a outstanding reputation. Directing the choirs in Perryton has been a rewarding experience. It has afforded me the opportunity to work with a truly inspirational combination, young people and music. Newcomb ' s first goal was a seven yard run in the first quarter, and t he conversion for two points was run by Roger Wright. Johny Leight ran one yard in the third quarter making a second touchdown. Extra points followed by Steve Coulter. New- comb ' s final touchdown came in the fourth quarter. His 18 yard run raised the Ranger score to 22 making the final score for the conference victory 22-0. FREDDIE LEWIS DANNY HUDSON JOHNNY LEICHT TERRY McWHORTER Valiantly fighting to keep their conference title hopes alive, the Perryton Rangers fell stubbornly, 13 to 6, to the undefeated Quanah Indians on Ranger field. The Indians jumped in front, 13-0, with touch- downs in the second and third period, plus a conver- sion kick following the second score. Perryton ' s fourth quarter touchdown came on an electrifying 46 -yard run by Johnny Leicht, right halfback, cli- maxing a Ranger 76 -yard march. Quanah ' s s tiff defense stopped the Rangers twice inside the 20 -yard stripe, once on the two-yard line in the second quarter and on the 19 in the final stanza. Badly outrushed, 100 to 31 yards in the first half, the never-say-die Rangers came back to out- gain Quanah in the second half, 140 to 119 yards. Preceding the game, football captains Terry McWhorter and Don Wagner escorted Football Queen Penny Price and her attendants: Ann Acker, Shelia Wylie, and Karen Lewis to the throne to reign over Homecoming Festivities. Cold weather dampened the Childress homecoming, but the Ranger ' s spirit remained strong. Both teams were held in scoring until the final five minutes of the game. With four minutes and twenty -seven seconds remaining, Johnny Leicht streaked into the end zone making the first score in the game. Roger Wright then flipped a pass to Danny Witt for the extra two points. The Rangers went ahead 8-0 until the Bobcats traveled down the field for a touchdown and a two point conversion. With strong defenses on both sides, neither team was able to gain a great deal of yardage on the ground, with the Rangers chalking up 134 yards to 176 for the Bobcats. Both teams went to the air 14 times, with Perryton com- pleting six for 54 yards and Childress connecting seven times for 99 yards. The Rangers had taken command of the game in the opening minutes, on a 91 -yard touchdown run by halfback Johnny Leicht, followed by a 58 -yard scoring scamper by reserve quarterback Freddie Lewis less than four minutes later. In the second period of play Ronnie Good went over from the two for the Rangers third touchdown. Roger Wright passed to Terry McWhorter for the two point conversion and Perryton went in front 20-6. After an intercepted pass led Perryton to the seven yard line Good crashed over for the counter. Again, Wright hit McWhorter in the end zone for the conversion. With less than a minute left in the first half Leicht tossed a pass complete to McWhorter, who broke loose at the 20 and raced into the end zone. An unsuccessful conversion left the Rangers in front, 36-6. With approximately three minutes left in the game Gary Newcomb plunged through from the three yard line to score Perryton ' s final touchdown. We, the Junior Class, would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the finest sponsors a class could have. Because of you, our jun- ior year has been one to remember throughout our following years. You ■have shown exceptional leadership and used wisdom throughout your manv de- cisions. All the time spent on our many projects were not only work, but you made them enjoyable. Again, many thanks go to Miss Shelton, Mrs. Gates, Mrs. LaMaster, Mr. Holloway, Mr. Miller, and Mr. Baxlev. Junior responsibilities were varied during basketball season. The girls had the job of bringing the brownies and cookies to the concession stand to be sold. Their job, however, did not end here, for during each game girls were chosen to work in the concession stands. Following the games a group of boys remained to clean the gym. Sweeping, selling hot dogs, and toiling in the concession stand were work, but at the same time, enjoyable. It was said that, if there was anything to be sold around P. H.S., you call on a junior to sell it. Throughout their junior year, the class spent much of their time rais- ing money. In all the work which had to be done, juniors willingly took part and made their work en- joyable. A beautiful white chrysanthemum arranged on a background of red and brown leaves with red ribbon was a familiar sight to many girls when the Friday night games rolled around. This was another way to make money for the Junior Class, and much time and work was spent before each game. It was truly a big pleasure to get a mum for the game and social that followed, held in the High School. To aid in school spirit (and to raise money), every junior had a group of tags to be sold before each game. Here, juniors are counting tags and separating them to be sold. 116 Juniors assume a new upper class sophistication. .Juniors . . . a . J .r . are aJeH m e j oenl ana ac oe. - am l ' i. The coaches and players have had experi- ences both in games and in practice that we will not forget. The boys have shown great desire and hustle in all they have done thus far this year. We have won two games and lost five, but we do not feel that this is the only in- dication that shows what we have ex- perienced. The boys have been willing to sacrifice a great deal toward our team, both in time and in physical strength. We feel the boys have learned a great deal and that if they keep up the fine effort that they have shown this will be a fine season for all concerned.
