Serving you as Student Council president has afforded me great pleasure. With all sincerity, 1 wish to thank the entire student body, as well as my fellow council mem- bers and sponsors for the wholehearted support and backing you gave me throughout the school year. Our goal this year was making the school more enjoyable for all of us, as well as striving to create a more efficient Student Council. We hope that we have succeeded in doing so. Congratulations to the ' 58 Ranger staff. Sincerely, ■t ,JL. -fvuM i iji Editing the ' 58 Ranger has been a great honor and privilege I shall not soon forget. The many days and long hours spent in designing this book shall but fade into pleasant memories as a highlight of my school days in PHS. To our photographers, Mr. and Mrs. Don Thurman, for their untiring efforts expended in making the school pictures; to Mr. Bob Bond, our advisor, for his sympathetic guidance and constructive criticism during the making of this volume; to Mr, Gilbert Mize, our superintendent, and the Board of Education, for their wholehearted assistance; to Janie Putman, my assistant editor, and to the entire staff for their wonderful cooperation, in deepest sincerity I extend my thanks, for without yoiu help this yearbook could never have become a reality. Goodbye to Ranger ' 58 and hello to Ranger ' 59. Sincerely, ' 58 Editor A SALUTE TO THE OIL INDUSTRY A new industry has changed the complexion of the Perryton area in recent years, making its influence felt in our economy and everyday lives, as well as in our schools. We speak, of course, of the oil industry which has taken its place with agriculture in plans for advancement in this area. To this industry, and the companies and people that make up the industry, goes our salute. Insofar as possible, this 1958 Ranger will follow the Oil Industry theme throughout its pages. mm m m mm - DEDICATION NELL VERNON 1918-1957 The precious worth of a good individual is never so valued as when our human ranks are thinned by Death ' s inexorable hand. Nell Vernon wasoneof those who with nothing more than the brawn of her person- ality laid wide around herself the arc of loyalty, truth, and love. Many years have passed since she walked the halls of Perryton High School as a student, but we never lost her support and help for any endeavor of the Red and White. With her death came again the old and always half-forgotten knowledge that such sincere and inspiring people are not replaced. The ranks close; the procession moves on; but the warmth and courage of that individual is gone, and is not duplicated. To this loving memory of Nell Vernon, we, the Ranger staff of 1958, dedicate this annual. CONTENTS . . C. H. Williams. Gilbert Mize, C. W. Foote. Roy Stollings. Gene Akers. Harold Simpson GILBERT MIZE Superintendent One of the greatest attributes of any human being is faith. When a builder decides to build a skyscraper, he doesn ' t know that he will have tenants for all the space. He doesn ' t know what unforeseen problems he may en- counter that will wipe out any profit that he plans to make. He calculates everything possible, but his final decision to proceed is based on faith in his ability to carry through successfully. Builders of raUroads, factories, or oil refineries have no assurance that their plans will be successful, but they have faith in themselves and others, and this gives them courage to go ahead. Without faith in the fundamental integrity of our fellow men, we could accomplish nothing. Those whom we call great have been men with great faith. As you go about this process of learning, of attain- ing knowledge and developing skills, keep in mind that you must undergird it all with abiding faith. Faith in yourselves, faith in yoiu associates, and faith in God. With this basic structure, you can progress successfully in whatever field you direct your energies. Sincerely, (h, VIOLET IGOU Secretary This record of activities during the 1957-58 school year wUl recall many pleasant memories to each of us in the years ahead. May they also, from year to year, recall to us those youthful aims and ambitions so common to young men and women, and may they kindle within us a determination not to let hardships or misfortune discourage us in their accomplishment. It is my hope that this book will inspire us all to a better and better life as years go on. Sincerely, faculty 1 ooooooc ARGELIA AGUILAR Spanish - English B.A., TWU BOB BOND Journalism - Typing B. PERRYTON 6, CANADIAN Zack Miller, Ranger halfback, hit pay dirt in the closing minutes of the first half on what turned out to be the only scoring play of the game as the Rangers opened their 1957 football season with a 6-0 win over the Canadian Wild- cats on the Canadian field. The Rangers were hampered by fumbles and penalties each time they seemed to have a scoring drive underway. PERRYTON 7, CANYON 20 After holding a 7-7 score throughout most of the first half, the Rangers gallantly conceded defeat to the mighty Canyon Eagles by a 20-7 margin in the Penyton ' s home debut. Late in the first half Ranger quarterback Barry Acker (re- placing injury-hampered Del Ray Mounts) suffered an injury similar to Mounts ' and Harold Shiflet was called on to handle the play-calling chores. prnnYTONI A ' C ARFNDON 7 Finding themselves on the short end of a 7-6 halftlme score ' the Rangers received some sort of stimulation from Coach Peterson at intermission and wound up 32-7 victors in a non-conference battle with the Clarendon Bronchos. Perry- ton was favored to win the game by a good margin but during the first half found themselves stymied by a deter- mined group of visitors who had only a 17-man squad in uniform. After a scoreless first half Ihe dreaded Hawks rallied to grab a 19-12 victory. The Rangers muffed two scoring chances in the first half, being down inside the enemy 20 both times before coming to a halt. pn n P YT( | T Q P A I l-l A RT ' ) Perryton handed a lightning fast Dalhart team its first de- ' feat of the season in a wild scoring spree with a final tally of 28-25 October 11 in the Dalhart stadium. The Wolves jumped the score to a 12-0 lead for the DHS eleven be- fore Ranger fullback Don Seymour broke loose for a 35 -yard touchdown run. Zack MiUer added two TD ' s and was named by the Amarillo Daily News as player of the week for his performance. PERRYTON 27, QUANAH 13 Head Deputy Don Seymour, his guns blazing touchdowns, led the unheralded Perryton Rangers past the favored Quanah Indians, 27-13, in the opening district 3-AA football contest for both clubs. Seymour scored two of the Ranger touchdowns and passed for another and was selected Back of the Week by the Daily News for his outstand- ing play. He carried the pigskin 46 times for a total of 247 yards. Several Perryton de- fensive men gang up to stop the Dalhart Wolves ball carrier. Harold Shiflet (22) and two unidentified Rangers have their hands on the man and Don Tillerson (51) and Tommy Carter (56) are coming in fast. Warhorse Don Seymour carries for the Rangers against the Seymour- Panthers in the bi-dis- trict playoff tilt. Ranger halfback, proved ' the margin of victory in the Wellington game as Perryton cinched the district football championship, downing the stubborn Skyrockets 19-13. The Rangers took an early lead, then were forced to fight hard to retain that lead and prevent their being overtaken by the oncharging Well- ington eleven. Brook Baker and Thomas Carter were outstanding defensively. PERRYTON 25, GUYMON Perryton gained revenge for a previous season defeat in taking the measure of the Guymon Tigers, 25-0, on the Rangers ' home field. Nearly all home team backs shared in ball-carrying honors in the contest, with good runs being turned in by Don Seymour, Earl McKinley, Sam McLain, Harold Shiflet, Del Ray Mounts and Bi ll Apple. Miss Sharon Wilson was crowned queen in ceremonies at this homecoming game. BILLY SHANNON HAROLD SHIFLET HOWARD SWINK RUSS THOMAS RALPH THOMPSON DON TILLERSON DON TOWNSEND pnnpYT VI CO m-IAMRO( l Held scoreless during the first quarter, the Rangers exploded ' for 32 points in the second stanza and then rolled over the Shamrock Irish 58-0 in the final regular season game. The win gave the Rangers undisputed possession of the dis- trict crown and set the stage for the bi-district battle with the ever-rough Seymour eleven. The game ' s most ex- citing run was turned in by Keith Shaffer, who took the opening kickoff of the second half and went 90 yards for pay dirt. PERRYTON 6, SEYMOUR 13 Outmanned, outscored, but not outplayed, the Penyton Rangers scored on a 40 -yard pass play late in the fourth quarter to avert a shutout as they lost to Seymour 13-6 in a bi-district playoff tilt. The game was played in the Greenbelt Bowl, Childress, November 23. Despite a sizeable weight handicap, the Rangers pushed the Panthers statistically, with 10 first downs to 6 for Seymour and total yardage of 231 to 250. Seymour ' s first tally came on the first offensive play from scrimmage as their right halfback broke through the line on a freak play, going through an unexpected hole and catching the secondary pulled up on the line. He went 89 yards to pay dirt. The Rangers had a third down and goal inside the 10 -yard line as time ran out at the end of the first half and Seymour leading 6-0. After Seymour had scored again to take a 13-0 lead, Del Ray Mounts hit Tommy Carter for a 40-yard pass- run play to avert a shutout. Stewart Johnson gets a good tackle in the Sey- mour game as the Ran- gers go all out to con- vince the Panthers they came to play football. Shiflet and Tom EUzey (77) are the other Ran- gers shown in the pic- ture. If the Rangers ' Harold Shiflet had been turned around in this picture, he might have received a well-placed haymaker at the hands of the Rocket. Another Perryton starter, Howard Swink, is in the background. Steve Thomas (13) goes high for the Rangers against the towering Wellington Skyrockets, but is not able to reach quite far enough. DEBATE CLUB activities FRESHMAN INITIATION In early September, Perryton High School haUs rang with cries of Eek! Here comes a senior! Air raid! and Good afternoon, Mr. Tillerson, as the freshmen were initiated in- to hallowed PHS halls by the upperclassmen. For the occasion the fish boys donned ma-ke-up, earscrews and knee pants and dyed their hair with food coloring, while the girls wore one flat shoe with a nylon stocking, one high- heeled shoe with a bobby sock, inside -out blue jeans and sweaters, and dreamed up amazing coiffures. The hair styles were accomplished with the aid of thorough applications of laundry starch. All the freshmen were kept busy shining the seniors ' shoes and carrying books, plates and SENIORS. HOMECOMING . 1 957 Coronation of the Perryton High School foot- ball queen was the highlight of halftime ac- tivities at the Guymon game in November. Identity of the queen, Miss Sharon Wilson, ■was kept secret until her crowning by cap- tain Don Tillerson. After receiving the traditional kiss, the queen sat on the sidelines with her court, consisting of Sue Akers, Connie LaMaster, Martha Pyles and Alta Johnson. s E N I O R P L A Y The curtain went up on Annie Get Your Gun, 1957 senior play, on December 2, under the direction of Mrs. Rose Powell. With Dixie Conley in the title role, the fast moving, hilarious plot traveled from Cincinnati to Minneapolis and on to New York. Playing roles as the world ' s greatest show- men were Zack Miller as Buffalo Bill and Ben Flowers as Pawnee Bill. Others in the cast were Don Tillerson, Charlie Davenport; Glen Castlebury, Frank Butler; Karen Crum, Dolly Tate; Sue Ann Brashears, Winnie Tate; Sam McLain, Chief Sitting Bull.
