O WCW? PERRYSBU RG HIGH SCHCOL PERRYSBURG, OHIO Dedication ln behalf of the students of Perrysburg High School, the Black and Gold dedicates its I964 annual to former President Kennedy, who was felled by an assassin's bullet while in the service of his country. Because of the vitality and continued interest President Ken- nedy showed toward the youth of the nation, the students of Perrys- burg as well as students across the nation felt a special closeness to the nations untiring leader. Students Shocked By Annoucement November twenty second is a day which is clear in the hearts and minds of millions of people all over the world. To most of us, the memory is painful. John F. Kennedy was admired by all. His policies and political opinions were not accepted by everyone, but no one can deny that he was a truly great man. The shock re- sulting from his death was universal. Everyone will always remem- ber where he was and what he was doing on that memorable day. I know I shall never forget. It was a dull and dreary Friday afternoon. I was sitting in my sixth period Science class taking a quiz on balancing chemical equations. I remember that I was having difficulty with two or three of the problems, and I was getting a little discouraged. After all, it was Friday afternoon, and I was anxious for school to end and the weekend to begin. All of a sudden I heard a chime which was the signal for an oncoming announcement. It seemed like a strange time to interrupt classes, but this didn't really disturb me. Students of Perrysburg High School, the announcer said. The President is dead. My first reaction was to laugh. He went on to say that President Kennedy had been killed by an assassin's bullet in Dallas, Texas. This had to be some kind of a joke. This is the United States of America., the greatest nation in the world. Things like that just don't happen here, at least not anymore. Gradually, l began to realize that it was all true. People wouldn't joke about a thing like that. I couldn't believe it, I didn't want to believe it. Who could have done it? Then they turned the radio on. This announcer said that they were still awaiting word as to the condition of the President. My heart heaved a sigh of relief. He wasni't dead. Just then the announcer broke in in an excited voice. Ladies and gentlemen, we have just received the official word from the White House. The Pres- ident of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy, is dead. He went on, but I didn't hear him. President Kennedy-dead? President Kennedy, the man I admired more than anyone else in the world-dead? The tears streamed down my face. I didn't care that everyone could see me. My mind was in mass confusion. Who? How? Why? I looked down at my unfinished quiz paper. At that moment, l couldn't have finished it if I had wanted to. Finally, the bell rang. Blindly, l stood up, walked over to the teacher's desk, put my paper down, and walked out of the room. Once in the hall, I became aware of the people around me. Some were crying like myself, but most of them were in a daze-too shocked for tears. When I got to my locker some of my friends were waiting for me. We tried to console each other, but I guess we all realized that it wasn't going to do any good. I put my coat on and started to walk home. lt was raining, but l couldn't tell the raindrops from my tears. Finally I reached our orange and white house. I opened the door and walked in. Instantly I could tell that my family knew by the expressions on their faces. I don't know why, but this sur- prised me. For the next three days, I sat glued to the television set. They kept repeating the some things over and over again, but I just couldn't tear myself away. l couldn't eat, l couldn't sleep. I just sat there, my eyes fixed on the screen. John F. Kennedy has been dead for months. He gave his life for the country he loved. The United States of America still lives, and it will never die as long as there are men like J. F. K. Ka ren Schmidt The Making of a President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29, l9l7 in Brook- line, Massachusetts. During his kindergarten to college years, he was educated at four schools: Dexter, in Brookline, Riverdale Country Day School, Canterbury School, in New Millford, Massa- chusetts, and Choate at Wallingford, Connecticut. During this period, it was said he had an inquisitive mind and a retentive memory, but his grades were average. In September l936, he entered Harvard. He spent his first two years there hardly pushing himself at all, but then in his junior year, he received the opportunity to go abroad, and he took it. When he arrived back at Harvard in his senior year, he was a changed man-. He worked harder than ever before and graduated in l94O with honors. Almost more than any other influence, World War ll helped mold John Kennedy into the man for the White House, although a back injury he received playing football almost kept him from entering the armed forces. But he underwent a five month regimen of back-strengthening exercises and was commissioned a Navy ensign in September, l94l. Transferred to the Naval Officer's Training School at Northwestern University, he was one of sixty men- chosen for officers at the new M.T.B. School at Melville, Rhode Island. Important qualities possessed by these men were courage, athletic toughness, intelligence, and quick thinking. In l943, he was transferred to the South Pacific and given the command of PT-IO9. The boat was a late model, 80 footer, badly in need of maintenance. Within ten days Kennedy and his crew had the boat in working condition. On August 2, when PT-IO9 and her crew were out on patrol, they were rammed by a Japanese destroyer. The force of the destroyer cut the PT boat in two and her gasoline tanks exploded. When the boat sank under them, Kennedy and his remaining crew swam to a little island. Even though his back injury was hurting him, Kennedy swam to Ferguson Passage every night try- ing to get help. Only total exhaustion made him relinquish the swim to other members of the crew. The suffering and exhaustion paid off. Help finally came. In I945, Jack Kennedy announced he would run for congress- man of Massachusetts. Campaigning long and hard, his memory for faces and names, and most of all his war record, paid off and in November of I946, he swamped his opponents. He started his career as a man of the House of Representatives in January, I947. Not a man to stand still for very long, he decided to run against Henry Cabot Lodge for the Senate seat of Massachusetts. The de- cision seemed fruitless, since Lodge was expected to win, but he campaigned furiously, helped by his sisters Jean and Eunice. Dur- ing the eight months of campaigning, he visited every major Mas- sachusetts city on many occasions. His recurrent back injury made it impossible at times to walk without the aid of crutches, but when it came time to make a speech, he left the crutches behind and walked to the platform like a West Point Cadet. The hard work and struggle paid off in the end, and he won by 70,000 votes. He entered the U. S. Senate in January, I953, and served for eight years. On the move again, he anounced in i956 that he would seek the Democratic party's vice-presidential nomination. Here, the issue of his Catholic religion was first raised. He was defeated by Estes Kefauver as the nominee for vice- president. But even this defeat did not stop him. He said he would try for the Presidency. For the Democratic nomination for president he had to defeat Stuart Symington, Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, and Adlai Stevenson. His campaign began on October 28, l959. In l96O, he won the New Hampshire Primary. After a few more victorious primaries, he was met with the religion issue in West Virginia. Again he won. John Kennedy was the youngest man to become nominated and also the first Catholic to become President. On September 26, October 7, October I3, and October 2l, television debates were held between Kennedy and Nixon, the Republican candidate for president. These debates brought out a positive Kennedy and a negative Nixon. After the debates both men campaigned hard, as they were in the home stretch be- fore election night, but Kennedy had one advantage-he was more well liked by young people under thirty. On' November 8, l96O, 68 million Americans went to the polls to choose a new leader. They selected John Fitzgerald Ken- nedy-the 35th President of the United States. To Our Late President John F. Kennedy Can courage die? Courage lives forever. lt is a lie That death can sever The arteries of man's eternal Spirit, Whence come those gifts of God Expressed to us in terms of noblest merit. Courage is not buried 'neath the sod, Nor patient wisdom, nor selfless giving In that cause of peace and freedom for us all. His values live in us, the living, If we awake to that high call. Dry the tears of grief and shame. Burn in our hearts, Eternal Flame. Bringing About Changes In Students' School Life The proposal to construct a new facility to honor the high school was first made in November, 1961, when the voters were confronted with a bond issue and building levy. But because of lack of knowledge of the proposed building and the large amount of money asked, the levy was defeated. ln November, 1962, the voters again were asked to consider the some bond issue without the building levy. This time it was passed and the ground breaking ceremonies took place in the spring of 1963. Those present were members of the administration, the student council president, Lynn Kirby, and several mem- bers of the community. The new P.H.S. still had one more hurdle to leap before its completion. A working levy had to be passed in November, 1963, for the operation of the school, and to the satisfaction of all connected with the school, this levy was passed. The students of Perrysburg this year had the oppor- tunity of transferring to a new high school. Our new building, located on South Boundary, is a tremendous structure and certainly something for every student, teacher, and parent to really be proud of. For five months everyone waited anxiously for the completion of the new building. The Move-a-rama as it was called, lasted two days: Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26. On Monday, January 28, the stu- dents in grades 9-12 and high school teachers resumed classes in the new high school for the very first time. Whether in the form of recreation, sportsmanship, or education, clubs provide the opportunity of broadening the student's interests by means other than through books. Clubs give students a way of expressing their own opinions and of doing the things that most appeal to them. ln addition, clubs enable the students to plan and organize activities, such as bake sales, sock hops, and dances. Students have shown their desire and enthusiasm for these group functions and have made this year's clubs more active and successful than in years past. These clubs, an essential part of our educational system, go just a little further than classroom work. Clubs teach responsibility and citizenship. Through membership in clubs the fiery freshman and the scholarly senior alike can find a way of giving for the good of the school. 40N Lf, Q W Carl Clement was elected Student Coun- cil President, x Student Council-FIRST ROW: J. Our marching band gives an exhibition during a football halftime show French Horn Quartet studies a new number under A string section of the orchestra practices in the bandroom of the old high school direction of Mr. Menichetti. Giannini Writes Music For Dedication The construction of a new school brought about the consideration of a piece of music for the dedication. The band boosters raised money through various en- deavors to support the idea. Mr. Park and Mr. Menichetti first considered a list of contemporary composers all over the United States. Then after much thought and study, they chose the composer that they thought, would be most suitable for the occasion. The composer's name is Vit- torio Giannini. Mr. Park wrote to him and asked him if he would write the music for the dedication of our new high school. He accepted. Mr. Menichetti sent him all the information he could about our band, in- cluding a list of the music the band had played during the past two years. With this information, Giannini wrote the music and gave it the title, Festive Overture. The music arrived during February and the band immediately began working for the dedication. The music is of the highest quality. 57 'Qs ...il R ' TSW if S n K ni P . I E m... . W J 'N' . 2 if H5 F s i X f 1 mf t L... ge . Y , , .QZQ ..gx.,m .m,, h 3? .vAA 1 R . , 5.Srf1fe'V,:: gl. . fi . . No matter if you win or lose, it's how you play the game that counts l This adage was well remembered by our jackets as they participated in another year of Fall, Winter, and Spring sports. Even though we may have suffered a few defeats, our players always kept their spirit high. Ever popular Football proved to be a most successful season 3 only once were we defeated. The Ding-Dong again was secured for the P.H.S. side of the Maumee River. Basketball season came amidst the biting cold of winter. This is where our team spirit showed, even though we didn't excel in this area. Our boys always played a good game. Our wrestlers showed improvement this year by bringing home many trophies, and making the sport of wrestling more interesting to the student body. Of course, there are our three Spring sportsg Baseball, Golf, and Track which are always showing improvement. 68 11 ,..-v w..M,,V K ,Al , The Yellow Jacket defenders exhibit their league leading defensive form in smearing opposing fUVlf'lEI'. Jackets Take Second After Dropping Just One The Perrysburg Yellow jackets Football team started the season slowly by absorbing on 8-6 loss to Eastwood. This loss proved to be the only one of the season. lt was also the only loss in two years under second-year head coach jerry Nowak. After this first loss, the jackets seemed to pick up momen- tum. They succeeded in picking up four quick victories. The first came against Springfield Local by a score of l5-8. Next came Lake by a score of l5-7. The third victory was won by a very confident jacket team against Elmwood, 48-O. The fourth victory came a little harder, a l9-l 5 win over Anthony Wayne. Rossford put the damper on a P.H.S. championship with an 8-8 game. They also cost us the championship the year be- fore by a tie. ln this year's game the jackets proved who the best team in the league was by running over Rossford and doing everything better except scoring. The next week Perrysburg traveled to Maumee and main- tained possession of the Ding-Dong bell for another year. The score was l9-6 in favor of the Yellow jackets. The jackets finished the league season by defeating the Genoa Comets, l8-6. To end the year right, the jackets defeated a non-league opponent, Lorain-St. Mary's. This game was close all the way, but Perrysburg came out on top by a 7-6 score. The final statistics for the jackets in the league were 6-l - land in all games, 7-l-l. -sawqr 5 +A 4 Q ' - 'I ififfff 3:3 J M, A 3 N. ,J ':p '5 I. U QS ffl, W Af, M Kg .aw Q2 Y W , in 'Q K, 2 .'. THE FOLLOW-TH ROUGH 87 88 Q - f-1 l gk Over the year, students have found that the faculty exhibits many differences. They don't act alike, they don't teach alike, and they hardly look alike. Still, with so many vast differences, these people all have two things in common: they are the shapers of our destiny and they are our friends. lt is in high school that we learn to think constructively, to make important decisions, and to behave as responsible, near-adults Through our teachers' grueling and unfair homework assignments we do learn to think and to discipline ourselves. With their help and guidance we make decisions that could change our entire future. Whether all of us realize it or not, our faculty are also our friends. The woman who teaches English from behind a big desk, the man who scribbles unsolvable math problems on the board, the history teacher who insists on having map tests, the language teacher arrayed in headset and microphone for the lab, and the science teacher with daily experiments will all turn into sympathetic listeners and wise counselors if only given the chance. They are people we can always turn to, not only with school problems but with personal ones as well. This is the faculty of Perrysburg High School, and we all thank them for the wonderful work they have done, are doing, and will continue to do for us, their students. loan Ka rsteadt e i ,- i , V if 7' -my :fix fi N ,... 2 KE .-12' 1 111 V--is 2: :wi-fe K' L 1359.1-L.f1Q.,gg1f,i M l'M9Yki?5s ' ' - ,W 'R- upguufvftuli Board of Education-From left to right: Wayne Leatherman, David Wilson, John Landwehr, Robert Pierson, Hilda lsch, James Fraser, Richard Britten. Financial, Educational Needs Of Perrysburg Schools Are Determined By Board Of Education Members The Board of Education is an important part of our school life and activities. The board sets stand- ards for the administration, faculty, and students. The financial and educational needs of the school and the curriculum policy are set up by the men of the board. They are elected representatives of the com- munity whose function is to set the course for the school. Pierson, superintendent of Perrys- burg's school system, and Rex M. Murphy, high school principal, fulfilled a longstanding dream this year with the completion of the new high school building. The construction of the new high school provides the opportun- ity for all students to acquire a superior educa- tion through the use of its modern facilities. This has been the real goal of the administra- tion's educational objectives. Construction of the new building was car- ried out through the combined efforts of the Board of Education, Mr. Pierson, and Mr. Mur- phy. Both the superintendent and Mr. Murphy have been at their posts for the past eight years. Before assuming his position here as super- intendent, Mr. Pierson taught in various com- munities, including Berlin Heights and New Rome, Ohio. His teaching fields are social studies and biology. The superintendent re- ceived his Bachelor of Science in Education degree in i947 and his M.A. in l95l, both from Ohio State University. He began work on his doctor's degree periodically from i952 thru l956. Before arriving at Perrysburg, Mr. Murphy taught American History at Cleveland Heights High School. He graduated from Kent State University in i938 with a B.S. degree. He re- ceived his M.A. in History at Western Re- serve University in l95l. At Western Reserve University in V955 and l956, he began post- masters work toward a doctor's degree. ROBERT M. PIERSON, superintendent of schools REX M. While looking into the auditorium, we remember the junior and senior class plays. Here we listened to many fine choral concerts and convocations on numerous subjects. ln the trophy case, we find the names of our members engraved on various awards. The old bell brings back thoughts of cold crisp evenings, bonfires, and games, cheerleaders. The gymnasium brings to mind the dances and the proms. We left these halls and entered a new school in january. As the first class to graduate from the new school, we hope to establish a long line of seniors who will have enjoyed their four years as much as we have. We will leave sadly, but also proudly, for we have been a big part of school life he Names, faces, and places may fade a reminisce in later years, but the memories are a pa rt of our youth wh live in our minds and hearts for deca 106 re. LARRY YOUNGS 13 Take just a minute and go back to that first day in 7th grade l You were the only one who knew his schedule perfectly. The first bell rang and you were off! Ten minutes later you were in the restroom crying I can't find my first period class. Then as the day progressed you found you had to pay a price for some of those fun subjects you signed up for. Off to the Senior High you went through sleet and snow, for there was no corridor as of yet. You made it only in time to find yourself being detained by some lovely senior. Did you report this to your teacher-no-you told your friends that some senior finally noticed you l Then there was the experience of being first up the stairs only to find they were the down stairs. Or was your first experience one of passing the office without a pass and running into your study hall teacher? Then after becoming accustomed to it all, l 964 brought about the big move and that fealing of fear again. ig i if 1 - n - X E '- . Qs an :. Q17 2 ii Af. A pwxnm Q..
