THE HISTORY OF PERRY TOWNSHIP Perry IS one of the northernmost townshIps of Fayette County and ITS name perpetuates the memory of Commodore OlIver Hazard Perry the hero of the battle of Lake ErIe during the second war Wlfh England Wlth regard to ITS early hIstory Perry TownshIp enjoys the honor of havIng had George WashIngton as one of the TIFST and most extensIve purchasers Of land In her borders he havjng YGCCIV d a warrant for lands IH the lImIts of the townshIp as now constItuted Apnl 3 V169 ThIs however was the mere carryIng Into effect ot a purpose conceIv d long before as IS evIdent from the correspondence between Wa hlngton and CaptaIn WIllIam Crawford datIng from September Zl l767 The correspond nce shows WashIngton to have been a CFITICOI judge of the nature and value of land and hrs determInatIon to acquIre It In thIs reg on IS In a measure to be attrIbuted to hIs attachment to the scenes of hIs early mIlItary expenences and hIs saddenIng dIsaster at Fort NecessIty WashIngton secured lands In Perry l'ownsh.p to the extent of sIxteen hundred acres CaptaIn Crawford OCTIHQ as has agent ID the transactIon besIdes conductIng extensrve negotIatIons for hIm In land In the area ot WashIngton PennsylvanIa IH OhIo and along the lIne of the OhIo Rlver and In VIrgInIa ln l77O WashIngton then a loyal EnglIsh subject made a tour of Inspectlon through thIs regIon to examIne the landed TSTFITOVY of whIch he had come Into possessIon Among the aIms he had In VIEW was the development of the mIllIng Interest by LIl'lllZll'1Q a stream that passed through hIs newly OCQUIFGCJ tract The completlon of the work was Interfered wIth by the outbreak of the RevolutIon but the Idea was never abandoned and the mIll became an accomplIshed realIty by September l776 For many years wIth a brIef InterruptIon just precedjng the vear l79O a mIll was IH operatIon upon the sIte where the one erected under WashIngton s InstructIons orIgInally stood After some attempts to dIspose of hIs landed Interests IH Perry TownshIp he leased them IU l789 for a term of IIVG yea to Colonel lsrael Shreve who at a later tIme acquIred them permanently by purchase The lease was made early In WashIngton s fIrst term as F'resIdent The greater part of the hIstorIc WashIngton property passed from the heIrs of Colonel Shreve INTO the possessIon of lsaac Meason lt was transmItted through successIve hands one of the latest owners beInq John RICE The other portIons of the tract were dIvIded among a number of purchasers and theIr Identxty has In the lapse of years been In a measure effaced The townshIp IS provIded by nature wIth good farmIng lands has excellent sand for glass manufacture and IS underlaId wIth valuable deposIts of coal PerryopolIs IS laId out on the same general plan as WashIngton D C wIth the streets branchIng out lIke the spokes of a wheel and the center of the town as the hub ln poInt of chronology Perry IS one of the later townshIps of Fayette County Its erectIon as a dIstInct polItIcal organIsm dates from l839 when the usual petutron to the court and the report of the commIssIoners on the seventh of June l839 were confIrmed and the townshIp erected accordmg to the lInes of the plot Other pornts of hIstorIcal Interest In Perry Townshup Include the lndIan Rocks on the Kunnear property the old Quaker Church and the lron Furnace back of Layton near Jacobs Creek THIS artucle would not be complete wIthout mentIonIng the fact that PerryopolIs IS located on Route 5l one of the most heavIly traveled hIghways In the state Eleanor Jane Knox Page 6 I I I . , .
