During our senior year, the United States has been cele- brating the centennial of a great but tragic event in the history of our country - the Civil War. We feel that we owe a debt to those who fought so bravely in that war. It is with that thought in mind that we chose the Civil War as the theme for the 1964 Mahonian. Members of the staff photographed personally, on the Gettysburg battlefield, selected scenes for the division pages. We are now mourning the loss of a great man - John Fitzgerald Kennedy. They too mourned the loss of a great man - Abraham Lincoln. We are faced with a tremendous civil rights problem. They too were faced with this problem - the out- come was one ofthe worst wars in history. We, in the twentieth century, feel that our problem should not be allowed to culminate in such a climax. We realize that many lives were lost and that hard- ships plagued those who survived. It is our hope that our nation will not be faced with a similar catastrophe. We can never honor or extol too much those individuals who in President Linco1n's words, gave their lives that the nation might live.
