A W miffssafii i 1 We the Class of 1964, will be the last class graduated from Perry Joint. Next ear the underclassrnen will experience something new and entirely different. As Y times change, it becomes necessary for other things to change, too. Education is ed no exce tion. 'The proven fact that smaller schools are hampered by the limit P curriculum they can offer and other disadvantages has brought about the consolida- tion of Perry Joint, Green Park Union, and Blain Union into one high school to be called West Perry, There definitely will be many problems to solve, but finally everyone will ake it. We would like to say benefit. The school will only be what the students m to all underclassmen, cherish fondly the memories of Perry Joint but look ahead to the future. During our senior year, the United States has been cele- brating the centennial of a great but tragic event in the history of our country - the Civil War. We feel that we owe a debt to those who fought so bravely in that war. It is with that thought in mind that we chose the Civil War as the theme for the 1964 Mahonian. Members of the staff photographed personally, on the Gettysburg battlefield, selected scenes for the division pages. And now, we, the staff, proudly intorduce to you the 1964 Editor-in-Chief CONNIE SHATTO Mahonian' 7964 ' Sag! X 1 X X Z SEATED: D. Dunkleberger, E, Robinson, H. Pearce, C, Shatto, A. Kretzing, S. In a world so troubled as ours we sometimes forget the turmoil that faced the people of the last century. We are now mourning the loss of a great man - John Fitzgerald Kennedy. They too mourned the loss of a great man - Abraham Lincoln. We are faced with a tremendous civil rights problem. They too were faced with this problem - the out- come was one ofthe worst wars in history. We, in the twentieth century, feel that our problem should not be allowed to culminate in such a climax. We realize that many lives were lost and that hard- ships plagued those who survived. It is our hope that our nation will not be faced with a similar catastrophe. We can never honor or extol too much those individuals who in President Linco1n's words, gave their lives that the nation might live. So it is with pride yet humility that the senior class of 1964 dedicates this Mahonian to those who died fighting for the rights of all men. V ' -ix.. . i,-z wtf.-za: X ,S ..r .. K ' 5 I 5 . But when the scrimmage games were over and the real ones started, we had a rude awakening. We had no offense and our defense made all the big mistakes. After a bad loss to Trevorton, we started over again and it took three more beat- ings before we started to look like a team. Pine Grove and Mahanoy both defeated us by one touchdown, but we pushed them all over the field. This was the team I had expected to coach. We finished the season by knocking Lykens out of the running, hammering Williams- town, and getting stopped by Halifax. We did not have a winning season, but we came back. This made it a good season. Their brilliance at these functions is not merely a spontaneous effort. It is rather a result of constant work, much of it during their own time, to improve their proficiency. This past year the band performed half- Zend k l E time drills and provided pep music for all the football games. They also participated in parades in the surrounding communities. The band owes its success to Mr. Harri- son, the director. He has given so much extra time and energy to make our band an organization with musical quality. ' ' SEXTET L. to R.: N. Morris, C. We sincerely hope that all the alumni are leading full and successful lives and that each one is a better person for having attended our Alma Mater. CLASS OF 1958 GLASS OF 1959 1 i L,L.ASS UF 1960 LASS or is oz 3 1 CLASS OF 1:1 o Late in August of 1958, 70 soldiers arrived at Fort Perry .Toint to begin our seventh year of battle in the fight for an education. As we stood in the lobby looking excitedly around the new battlefield, we realized that we had one definite goal in mind. That goal was an education! We knew it would be essential for us to choose our leaders for this year. They were Captain Ralph Swan, Lieutenant Sally Stoops, recording our proceedings was Virginia Cornish, the treas- urer was Sandra Shelly, and the historian was Jill Shope. With the guidance of our command- ers, we soon won our seventh battle. In 1959, we entered our eighth year of battle with more hope and courage than ever before. To keep our infantry organized, we elected the following as officers: presiding as Captain was Connie Shatto, Lieutenant Sally Stoops assisted our captain, keeping account of the infantry's proceedings was Connie Black, the treasurer was Donna Gamber, and the history was recorded by Susan Fisher. Our two Student Council representatives were Ronald Boggs and Randy Wilson. As the end of the battle drew near, one of the soldiers came down with an attack of appen- dicitis. This soldier was Brooks Reeder, who was not able to finish the eighth year with us. On August 30, 1960, 58 soldiers retumed to their positions as members of the freshman infantry. Two new members joined our forces. They were Elaine Weibley and Stanford Kings- borough. We began to work earnestly to make money. One financial goal was the senior class trip to New York City. Quite a few of the members began to show promising athletic abilities in the various sports. Others proved to be very capable leaders. Elections were held once again and when the votes were counted, we discovered that we had a new captain, Barry Owen. Lieutenant Sally Stoops resumed her position as the captain's assistant. Diane Dunkleberger was elected to keep track of the proceedings. Connie Black be- came our permanent treasurer and Susan Fisher became our permanent historian. Gail Shearer and Richard Sheibley represented our infantry in the Student Council. Captain Barry Owen called a very special meeting. The meeting was to select a date for a dance and a bake sale. Both of these projects were successful and each put money into our treasury. Then in March, Diane Dunkleberger was rushed to the hospital with a serious attack of appendicitis. She became a history maker in the Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg. We were glad to have Diane back to finish the freshman year with us. Early in May, another one of our soldiers, Connie Black, became seriously ill with Infectious Mononucleosig, She became a history maker in the Carlisle Hospital. She was Lmable to finish the freshman year with us. May 29, 1961, we won the ninth battle in our fight for an education. The future seemed promising in the eyes of all the members. Sixty soldiers returned in August of 1961 to keep fighting. This year we had fine strangers in our infantry. They were Connie Hostetter, Barbara Barrick, Patricia Dixon, Martin Dixon, and Patrick Layser. Elections were held and because of the outstanding accomplishments of our class officers, they once again resumed their positions. Martin Dixon and Ray Snyder were chosen as Student Council representatives. Checking the treasury, we decided to improve our financial situation by holding two very successful dances and bake sales. Soon the tenth battle was over and we anxiously awaited our junior year. The Class of '64 entered their junior year with sixty-two members. Three new students joined us. They were Linda Barrick, Gary Siegfried and Connie Martino. On September 5, the following members were elected to office. Our new Captain was Connie Shatto, and because of the ability of Sally Stoops, Diane Dunkleberger, Connie Black, and Sue Fisher, they again resumed their previous positions. Brenda Little became Diane's assistant secretary because of extra secretarial work. Student Council representatives were Ron Boggs and Terry Urich. September 17, 1962, the Ring Committee chose our class rings from the Josten Ring Com- pany. In November, the Juniors presented a three-act play entitled Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Many thanks went to Mrs. Swan and Mr. Heston for helping to make the play a huge success. Many long hours were spent in the preparation for the prom, Fantasia given in honor of the Seniors of 1963. With the success of the play, the three dances, and the bake sales, the treasury began to rise. May 29, 1963, marked the end of the junior year with another battle over and won. Well, here we are at lastl Our Senior Yearl We looked forward to a full and busy year. Only 52 soldiers were present to continue the last months of our high school years. We were disappointed that some of the members were not with us in the end. But they had found their way of life early. Captain Connie Shatto, Lieutenant Sally Stoops, Secretary Diane Dtuikleberger, Treasurer Connie Black, Historian Sue Fisher, and Student Council representatives Ron Boggs and Terry Urich again served their class as senior officers. Our treasury began to fill as we had two very successful dances, two successful bake sales, the Senior play, excellent candy sales, and our yearbook, The Mahonian. Finally our financial goal was reached. We journeyed to New York City to spend our last three days together. As graduation draws near, we pause to say thank you to all our advisors and special thanks go to Mrs. Swan and Mr. Ramer who helped us through the last battle. After receiving our honorable discharge from Fort Perry Joint, we will enter the world as individuals and not as a group. make- ewan um-7?65 Queen: SUE DUM Escort: IOHN WALLACE Senior Attendants: DIANE CONRAD Escorts: MARTIN DIXON SUE KUGLE DONALD MORROW Junior Attendants: ELAINE WEIBLEY Escorts: ROBERT HOCKENBERRY CONNIE BLACK DARWIN MCALLISTER I The Queen is being crowned by Mr. Paul. E MEMORIES OF FANTASIA Our prom in honor ofthe Class of 1963, like most proms, took months of hard work and planning but almost everyone will agree that it was worth it. When we think of our prom now and in years to come we will have fond memo- ries of all the fun and work of making and searching for usable decorations, the wonderful co-operation of our class and our teachers, the very hot, humid but fun-filled day spent in changing the gym into a fairyland garden, the last minute rush for balloons, and finally the colorful beauty of party dresses, sweet-smelling flowers and lovely music, all combined to make an evening we Shall never forget- l-low diligently we worked trying to put together those shamrock trees! Since that time, the life of another great man, Iohn F. Kennedy, has been taken by a demented individual also for reasons unknown to the world. Because of the parallel situations in the assas- sinations of these men and the comparative simi- larity of the ideas for which they were assassinated, we feel that our late President, Mr. Kennedy, de- serves equal honor in our publication. We present their photographs here as a com- mon tribute and testimony of our gratitude to these great men who gave their lives in a last measure of devotion that we may have a better atmosphere for the pursuance of our future interests. r E 76 0,4 March 13, 1946 CONNIE ALICE SHATTO March 3, 1964 We shall long remember the cheerful, exciting beginnings of our yearbook. It was to be very different, the very best ever since it was the last, and a memorial to all the soliders who had fought and given their lives in the Civil lm Connie, did not know: however, nor did we, that she was truly developing her own memorial. Happy and gay, yet serious and devoted to perfectiion, she put her whole heart and soul into this yearbook. Although she is gone from us in physical being, everything that was Connie lives in this, her final completed work. As a diplomatic president and warm person, she meant as much to our class as Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Kennedy meant to the whole nation. Connie will never be gone from us as long as this yearbook of 1964 remains. Our little systems have their dayg They have their day and cease to beg They are but broken lights of thee, And thou, O Lord, art more than they. We have but faith: we cannot knows For knowledge is of things we seey And yet we trust it comes from thee, A beam in darkness: let it grow.
