“THE SCHOOL EVENTS THAT MADE THE NEWS IN 1987-88 The school year 1987-88 was filled with many memorable events. A few of the major events that will long be remembered are: In the fall we returned to find a new wing added to our school with four classrooms and a computer tab. The computer lab is the latest, state of the art in personal computer technology, with 26 Apple II GS's, a video link, and a network system. In addition, three new teachers were there to meet us on our first day: Mr. Platano in the Math department, Mrs. Drozda in Home Economics, and Miss Evans in Science. Within a few weeks we were visited by the Fife 49ers from Scotland to play our Alumni. By the end of the fall, the football team locked up first place in the ESC and for the first time ever entered the State Football Playoffs. The girls also showed us the mark of champions this year by getting to the playoffs in volleyball, basketball, and softball. In the winter, Bret Born and Rusty Pierce qualified for the state wrestling tournament. Not only did we excel athletically, we also showed our pride academically. For the first time in years, Perry High School sponsored a Science Fair. Some of science students entered the Science Olympiad and made it all the way to the state competition in Columbus. By spring the plans for our new school campus were unveiled. The district received much media coverage while decisions were being made about the purchase of additional land and the sharing of nuclear money with other districts. During spring break the band visited Dis-neyworld, Seaworld, and toured parts of Florida. At the end of the school year, the Perry Softball Tournament was revived. The faculty members were victorious over the sophomores by a score of 7 to 6. Although the school year was over, the major events were not. During the first two weeks of summer vacation the Spanish Club tra ivied to Mexico escorted by three of our faculty members. And finally, after 33 years of dedicated service in education, Mrs. Hoffman, the school’s guidance counselor decided to retire. Mrs. Hoffman's years of caring and friendship have been appreciated by all and will be missed. THE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM GOES TO STATE With the help of their fearless coaches, Miss Evans, Mr. Crow, and Mr. Walters, the 15 members and 2 alternates of the Olympiad team qualified for the State Competition in the Regionals held in Cleveland. Placing 4th out of 19 tough school districts, Perry High's team traveled to Columbus to compete against 40 other teams from all over Ohio. There, they placed 25th, an excellent showing for the first year of competition. Leading the pack were seniors, Mark Mazurik and Matt Peterson, anchorman in the high scoring Science Bowl event. The competition was tough and they handled it well. The team will miss them next year as they try to top this year’s great performance. [vents Of The Year Z
