THE SCHOOL EVENTS THAT MADE THE NEWS IN 1987-88 The school year 1987-88 was filled with many memorable events. A few of the major events that will long be remembered are: In the fall we returned to find a new wing added to our school with four classrooms and a computer tab. The computer lab is the latest, state of the art in personal computer technology, with 26 Apple II GS's, a video link, and a network system. In addition, three new teachers were there to meet us on our first day: Mr. Platano in the Math department, Mrs. Drozda in Home Economics, and Miss Evans in Science. Within a few weeks we were visited by the Fife 49ers from Scotland to play our Alumni. By the end of the fall, the football team locked up first place in the ESC and for the first time ever entered the State Football Playoffs. The girls also showed us the mark of champions this year by getting to the playoffs in volleyball, basketball, and softball. In the winter, Bret Born and Rusty Pierce qualified for the state wrestling tournament. Not only did we excel athletically, we also showed our pride academically. For the first time in years, Perry High School sponsored a Science Fair. Some of science students entered the Science Olympiad and made it all the way to the state competition in Columbus. By spring the plans for our new school campus were unveiled. The district received much media coverage while decisions were being made about the purchase of additional land and the sharing of nuclear money with other districts. During spring break the band visited Dis-neyworld, Seaworld, and toured parts of Florida. At the end of the school year, the Perry Softball Tournament was revived. The faculty members were victorious over the sophomores by a score of 7 to 6. Although the school year was over, the major events were not. During the first two weeks of summer vacation the Spanish Club tra ivied to Mexico escorted by three of our faculty members. And finally, after 33 years of dedicated service in education, Mrs. Hoffman, the school’s guidance counselor decided to retire. Mrs. Hoffman's years of caring and friendship have been appreciated by all and will be missed. THE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM GOES TO STATE With the help of their fearless coaches, Miss Evans, Mr. Crow, and Mr. Walters, the 15 members and 2 alternates of the Olympiad team qualified for the State Competition in the Regionals held in Cleveland. Placing 4th out of 19 tough school districts, Perry High's team traveled to Columbus to compete against 40 other teams from all over Ohio. There, they placed 25th, an excellent showing for the first year of competition. Leading the pack were seniors, Mark Mazurik and Matt Peterson, anchorman in the high scoring Science Bowl event. The competition was tough and they handled it well. The team will miss them next year as they try to top this year’s great performance. [vents Of The Year Z A LOOK BACK AT ONE OF PERRY'S OUTSTANDING WRESTLERS: DREW DAVIS When last year's yearbook was printed, no picture was available of Drew Davis. Therefore the yearbook staff would like to include a picture of Drew in this year’s edition along with a list of his wrestling accomplishments. In 1987 Drew finished in 4th place in the state AA wrestling tournament which was the highest place finish in Perry wrestling history. Drew was a four time regional qualifier from 19841987 and finished second in the 138 lb. class in 1987 He was the district champion in 1987 and the district runner-up in 1986. He was the All ESC League Wrestler three times, and News Herald wrestler of the week in 1986 and 1987. Drew was the Grand Valley Wrestling Tournament Champion and Most Valuable Wrestler in 1986. and the Hawken Tournament Champion in 1987. and 1986. In 1986 Drew won the Perry Most Pins Award. Most Takedowns Award, and was the Most Valuable Wrestler. In 1987 Drew won the Perry Most Valuable Wrestler award. Most Takedowns Award, and Team Point Award. Although they put up a good fight, the 49ers lost the game. File 49ers 7 CANTERBURY TALES Geoffery Chaucer’s Medieval Canterbury Tales came to life for Mrs. Matchinga's English 1201 classes one fine April day as the students actually dressed and portrayed the twenty - nine pilgrims who supped and made merry at the Tabard Inn on the eve of their pilgrimage to St. Thomas Beckett's shrine in Canterbury, England. A Medieval dinner was prepared and served while students recited original poems dipicting their characters. Visiting teachers assisted Harry Baity, the host and judge (portrayed by Mrs. Matchinga), in selection of the winners. This year the group was very active. In March, the group invited actor and author Charles McGregor to speak to the students. He told his life story and advised students to avoid drugs and alchol. In April, the group traveled to the Front Row for the SADD workshop. The members laughed and cried as they listened to speakers tell their feelings and stories. Speakers included Robin Swaboda, Micheal Stanley, Bart Eisenhart and many more. They shared how important the group is. At the workshop, Perry was chosen as Lake Geauga SADD center. TACA SADD sponsored several other projects, such as Grim Reaper Day. It was held May 13 to remind the students of how many die as the result of drinking and driving. Becky Mazurik was the Grim Reaper and every 27 minutes she tagged a person with a black armband to signify their death. The day ended with an assembly where tagged students were asked to stand. The assembly was closed with a movie, “Staying Alive , to remind students of the seriousness of the day. At prom time a wrecked car, sponsored by Lane Road Auto Wrecking, was placed in front of the school to show students the result of drinking and driving. Every student that turned in the signed Contract for Life received a discount off their prom ticket thanks to the Kiwanis, PHS Student Council, and TACA SADD. Editor Jamie Bowser and Co-editor Lori Modic were justifiably proud of this year's 56 page senior issue which was given to all seniors. A productive (but weary) staff celebrated the conclusion of another successful year at the May 18 banquet held at Chi-Chi’s. Periscope 77 BUCCANEERS CONCERT CHOIR The Concert Choir had a fantastic year. The choir performed at three home concerts in October, December, and May, as well as the Lake County High School Choral Festival and the District VII Large Group Contest. Their performance at contest awarded them a superior rating which is the highest rating possible. Several choir members also participated in Solo and Ensemble Contest. As a result of the enthusiasm and dedication of its members, Concert Choir membership has steadily increased. The Buccaneers are a group of auditioned performers who are chosen on the basis of musicianship, vocal ability, attitude, and stage presence. The group performs shows which include both singing and dancing. They rehearse four hours a week, all year long. The 1987-1988 edition of the Buccaneers performed approximately 15 times, at home concerts, civic events, and at nursing homes and senior citizen centers. Three different shows were prepared which included an Introductory Show, A Christmas Show, and a Spring Show which included Disney tunes, “Family from Dreamgirls and When You're Smiling. 1.1st row: left to right: Gretchen Horton, Carrie Schulze, Michelle Johnston, Kelly Hammond, Butfy Cashel! 2nd row: Miss Schumaker, Chelsea Braden, Tina Courtwright, Tammy Breedlove. 3rd row: Peter Peterson, Matt Peterson, Mark Kempton. 2.
