HAPPENINGS OF THE YEAR The Alien The Nuclear Power Plant The Power Plant sits on the shores of Lake Erie. Just as Lake Erie has been the life of Northern Ohio, the Power Plant will also bring new life and prosperity to our area. The Plant started in 1974, and made its first electricity on September first, 1986. There are two separate electricity manufacturing units. Unit I is, at this point, completed and ready to make electricity, however due to many small complications it is not currently making electricity. A predictable time frame for full po wer has been set at late spring or early summer of 1987. Unit II on the other hand is not very near competion. It has been what is called deferred until 1990 sometime, when it will be decided whether or not there is a need for its additional power making capacity. Our principal, Mr. Robert Geisler, is in favor of the Plant. He feels it will generate needed tax dollars for our educational programs. He appreciates the power plants dedication to our community, and knows it will benefit our community greatly due to the fact that more people will be attracted to our city due to the advantages the Power Plant will create. 1986-1987 In Review The year of 1986-1987 will be cherished especially by the seniors who experienced their last year of high school education. At the national level President Ronald Reagan was being questioned about the Iran-Contra scandal, which was known as Iran Gate. The Statue of Liberty celebrated its 100 anniversary and the Voyager flew on its graceful wings, filled with fuel, on a 23,000 mile journey around the world without refueling. On the local scene, the Perry IGA reopened on February 3 under the new name of Northridge IGA. The power plant went on line in September and has been producing energy successfully ever since. In sports, the Cleveland Browns captured the AFC Central title, but lost to the Broncos in the AFC playoffs. Michael Stanley called it quits after 13 years in September with his farewell concerts at the Front Row. The latest fads and fashion again prevailed at PHS -permed hair was in for girls and spiked hair for the guys. Bib overalls, long tailed shirts and stirrup pants were also the thing to wear. Some of the fashion made a person wonder whether the students' mothers had ever told them that their socks should go under their pants. Despite the many years that will follow 1987 for the seniors, the four short years at Perry High School will long be remembered. 1. The Buccaroos 2. See anything Interesting?.. . Nope! 3. Rough Night Steve? 4. Three Muskateers 5. Philled with spirit 6. California Dreaming Charles Dickens wrote in'‘A Tale of Two Cities : It was the best of times, it was the worst of times and that just about sums up my year at Perry! Mostly, though, it was the very best of times. Little did I know when applied in October '85 for the Fulbright Teacher's Exchange that I’d be washed up on the shores of Lake Erie. In fact, when the news came through in March ’86 that I was destined for Perry, Ohio, I had to reach for the atlas —to find out where OHIO was! (Geography never was my strong point!) After a few letters and a couple to Trans-Atlantic phone calls to Mr. Wilson, it was time, last August, to pack into 2 suitcases enough of my worldly posessions to last me a year. Actually, my husband was also allowed 2 suitcases, of which used one for him and the other for me. This have him one and me three. Seems fair. We arrived in Perry at the beginning of August in a heatwave, or so it seemed to us who had left Scotland shivering in our typical summer temperature of 56° Almost immediately I was thrust into the very demanding teaching schedule of Perry High School. Gone were the 9 a.m. starts of my school in Scotland, gone, also, the 65 minutes for lunch, and with it the chance to workout with Jane Fonda. (Perry has much to answer for —the tired lines around my eyes and my expanding waistline not least of these!) For 36 weeks was getting up in the middle of the night and learning the new social skill of devouring my lunch in 20 minutes Hat. As a result, by the time my husband gets home from Brown's nursery at 4:30 I'm worked out on the living room floor. For several weeks my social life ground to a standstill. What can you do, where can you go when you 've falling asleep at 8 p. m. every night? And I need my steep —face it, I need all the beauty sleep I can get! However, my body gradually came out of shock and I found myself attending a local church for Sunday worship. From there it was only a short step to joining the choir and learning handbells. Still, that did leave Wednesday evenings free and by the end of September I was learning to play bridge — a new venture for me, but one which requires intelligence and mathematical aptitude, neither of which I possess in abundance. But it was fun, and usually we had mulled cider and doughnuts later. Never one to sit at home and stagnate, found myself attending as many sports matches as I could fit in. Football- American Style — will always hold a special place in my heart, and Halloween will never be the same! That's the night the ghoulies and ghosties got me and ended up with the hood of my lovely little car rammed into the exhaust of someone's van. I was lucky to walk away from that one. And before you ask — No, it wasn 't my fault — and that's what I told the judge when he fined me $25 for careless driving! For Christmas I coaxed my daughter from the sunshine of California with the promise of a White Christmas. No snow!! I, too, was promised the almost inevitable snow days of Ohio. A snow day , but would you believe this year my home school had 3 consecutive days off school because of bad weather? I believe it, I believe it! However, I have a theory about that — I think the warmth of my sunny personality has kept the winter mild over here. (Anyone like to disagree?) So the play. Suddenly it was February, and just in case I had any spare evenings left over, rehearsals were scheduled for 4 nights each week. What fun! What frolicks! What hilarity! What exhaustion!! But well worth the frayed nerves and 5 lbs weight loss! (Thanks cast and crew!) And before you know it, it's Faster. The school year is almost over. People say that as you get older times flies by more quickly. This has been especially true this year. Homesick? When have I had the time — ask you? So what will I remember most about Perry? First of all, the friendliness of the natives. Everyone (faculty and students) has been very welcoming, interested and tolerant this year. I’ll remember my first American football game (in my ignorance thought that with 4 quarters of 12 minutes each I'd be home within an hour!); my first Thanksgiving dinner with a marvelous American family; the beautiful fall colors; our Hogmanay party on New Year's Eve with new friends made in the States; celebrating Bum's Night (a Scottish festival on Jan. 25th) my way; Perry Band playing in the Coliseum; most of my students (some of whom are engraved in my memory forever!); and the fun I've had teaching here. Thank you all for a memorable year, but don't think this is the last you 'll see of me— I'll be back! HAPPENINGS OF THE YEAR 4

SPANISH CLUBS SAYS “HOLA” TO MEXICO The classroom material learned in Spanish class came alive when the Spanish Travel Club traveled to Mexico on June 9-18,1987. Included in this exploration were chaperons, Mr. Kobus and Miss June Barber, and club members Greg Laurie, Tonya Advey, Kris Thomas, Rusty McCandless, Mark Marzurik, Vikki Shields, Renee Thompson, Bob Torzok, Jeff Martin, Tami Gilson, and Louis Schweickart. In addition, Beth Winthrup, the winner of her school contest, joined the group. During the seven days in Mexico City the group experienced Mexican culture and saw such sites as Chapultepec Castle, The Pyramids of Teohihuacan, The Shrine of Guadalupe, The Plaza of Three Cultures, and The Ballet Folkorico. Next, the Travel Club traveled to Taxco, the City of Silver, where they stayed a few hours before venturing to Acapulco. During the three-day stay in Acapulco, the Travel Club saw many wonderful sites. Unfortunately, some of the group sampled more than just the Mexican culture. At least one student experienced Montezuma’s Revenge”, earning her the title “Double Whami Tami”. In addition most club members will not soon forget Mr. Kobus' famous saying Group Shot!”. The group would stand together at a famous site while Mr. Krobus would take 10 or 11 pictures with each members’ camera. By the last shot the members were often too tired to smile. Despite a few inconviences, the group enjoyed their travels. They returned to the United States with many memories to last them a lifetime.
