A YEAR IN REVIEW The 1985-86 school year was the 210th birthday of our country, America. It will always be remembered with much happiness and exciting memories. Some individuals have had a few unhappy moments but will still remember the year as one of the most unforgetable years at Perry High School. We had some very memorable events in the news during the year. On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida and 75 seconds later exploded over the ocean killing seven of our astronauts We mourned for our losses but will still go on and build a new space shuttle. Two days after the loss of our space shuttle, Perry and the rest of Ohio experienced an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. Who will ever forget sitting in a class feeling the ground and school shake? The earthquake delayed the start of the Nuclear Power Plant for another few months, costing an additional $54 million. Other major events that happened in the year included the following: In February-March of '86 the leader of the Phillipines, Ferdinand Marcos, fled in exile in fear of being executed by his own people. This left Corzina Aquino as the new-leader. Also Halley’s Comet could finally be seen again. On a clear night one might have been able to see it streaking across the sky. Finally we had the new image of the average loser, Herb! from Burger King. We do have a mistaken identity in our school (no name mentioned)! To look at Perry in review, we had many memories to hold onto. Who can forget the two Lip Sync contests that the cheerleaders sponsored7 The two winners were Motley Crue and Tina Turner. Also we had the volleyball game of the school, when the seniors beat the juniors and freshman and then went on to capture the title by beating the faculty team. We also tried something new. We had two Blood Mobiles instead of one, and both were very successful. Lastly, the most exciting event of the year came in the winter. The boys' basketball team won eight games to tie the record already held in the last ten years Way to go boys! Gasoline dropped from $1.15 last year to a low of 70C this year. President Reagan has brought the inflation rate down to 4%. and home mortgage rates are below 10% for the first time in 15 years. Finally, financing rates for car loans are ranging from 7.9-9.9% The popular musical performers in the year were as follows: Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Bruce Springsteen. Favorite movies of the year were Back to the Future. Rambo, and Rocky IV. The year of 1985-86 provided many memories for the gradual mg class that will not be forgotten.
