The team had many wins, compiling a 101 overall dual meet record. One of the most gratifying wins was at the Kirtland Invitational at which the team placed first overall. The biggest accomplishment of the season was the second place finish at the Malone Invitational, the largest meet in Northeast Ohio. The team also won the GRC meet for their third consecutive year. Sectionals proved to be the worst meet of the year. The team needed only a fourth or better finish. The effects were staggering as the team finished fifth, 3 points away from fourth. Joe Medlen continued his season two weeks for the state meet. The prospects for next year’s team took excellent as the varsity only loses one senior, Mike Beyer, and hopes are set for an ESC championship and a longer post season. Place In G.R.C.: 2nd G.R.C. Although they failed to acquire a Grand River Conference championship, they received many other team accomplishments as well as individual accomplishments. Coach DiDonato will be losing two seniors, Karen Parker and Jill Stetler, but expects the team to do very well next year. Karen and Jill are both four year letter-women and have helped the team out every year. The four freshman runners, Caroline, Michelle, Paula, and Tracy Nichols will be the backbone again, of next years team. This year, although the team was young, the girts did considerably well as shown by their 3-1 record. This year the Pirate Girls Team had an outstanding individual accomplisher. Michelle Webb, affectionately known as The Weber by Coach DiDonato, qualified for the state meet. Next year, goals have been set on an ESC championship, LCC championship, district qualification, and good showings at all invitationals. Medalist, Most Valuable Player Scott Heil- Most Improved Player The varsity golf team this year consisted of all juniors, sophomores, and freshman. It didn't have a senior on the team. This made for a young, inexperienced squad. Taking this into persective the golf team's season was very successful. This can be shown by the achievement of both preseason goals. These goals were to win the G.R.C. Championship for the third consectutive year and to go .500. They achieved this .500 record by going 11-11-1, which is a great improvement from last years 6-12-1 record. Not just that they won five more matches, but they played a much tougher schedule preparing for next years entry into the E.S.C. Coach Greg Rinyo hopes this improvement will continue through next season and his goats are set high. These goals include an E.S.C. Championship for the team to reach district play. 1983 Golf Team, I. to r. 1st row- Dale Homerick, Mike Gaertner, Todd Gilstrap, Ray Kinney, Brian Varsey, Dave Lydic 2nd row- Mike 2inn, Scott Heil, Mike Wickham, Brian Leitch, Fred Smith, Steve Gortz, Joe Horvath, Craig Homerick Scores: Perry-186 Beachwood-195 Perry-178 Kirtland-169 Perry-172 Berkshire-174 Perry-189 Harvey-191 Perry-176 Ashtabula St. John-166 Perry-176 Ashtabula Edgewood-172 Perry-175 Pymatuming Valley-173 Perry-163 Madison-162 Perry-163 Geneva-172 Perry-172 Jefferson-180 Perry-174 Geneva-171 Perry-174 Ashtabula City-170 Perry-173 Pymatuming Valley- 188 Perry-173 Lake Catholic-183 Perry-174 Beachwood-180 Perry-379 Riverside-349, Kirtland- 367, Madison-370 Perry-180 Harvey-178 Perry-184 Ashtabula St. John-194 Low Score Wins 1 Casement Golt Course 2 Mike Wickham Most Valuable Player 3 Nice Swing Mike 4 Scott Heil Most Improved Player 5 So That's How You Do It. . . The Pirates concluded its membership in the G.R.C. with this 2nd consecutive championship, narrowly missing the computer playoffs by 7 points. Coach Ritley said, The effort and comeback exhibited in the narrow loss to Madison at the start was one of the most emotional and remarkable efforts have ever seen in my 14 years of coaching. This loss was a terrific learning experience which helped our team and coaches build confidnece for a great 8-2 record The entire '83 squad deserves all the credit because of their hard work. In 1984, the team hopes to make the switch to the E.S.C. successfully. They hope to do this by winning their first E.S.C. championship. For this goal, they will need to maintain a high intensity level, build depth, and establish success early. They will also need a strong defense and offensive line. The starting varsity team consisted of two seniors, one junior, and two sophmores. Though the team only won two games they showed much desire and hustle, and never gave up. Although it was a trying season for new Head Coach John Dorko and his team, they showed obvious improvement as the season progressed. The team goal this year was to win ten games, but Coach Dorko knew with this young team they may go winless. Next year the Pirate team will enter the E.S.C. The goals for next have been set higher, as the team will have much experience. 1. Team Unity 2. Jerry breaks through 3. The 1983-84 Basketball Team 4. Perry plays defense 5. Jimmy Jeff 6. Our pitching consistency was much improved over the year. The team was more agressive with the bat and hit the fast pitch better this season. Our strengths included our ability to bunt and our quickness in running the bases. Our only weakness was our inability to make the big play on defense when it had to be done consistently. Next year we will have the experience needed to be successful, but most work on the improvement on the pitching staff. We must also be able to make the necessary changes from fast-pitch to slow-pitch, which will take hard work and preparation on our part. Would this night go off as planned? At 5:15 a giant greyhound bus pulled into Perry High school. Two years of hope, dreams and planning went into making tonight a dream come true! The hope had finally turned into reality! Maynard Ferguson was playing a concert at Perry High! After unloading the bus, Maynard and his band were treated to a smorgasbord dinner in the band room. At 7:00 Maynard and his band went to rehersal on the stage. Some of the Perry band members were privileged to help Maynard and his band set up. At 7:45 the doors were opened and the crowd of excited Maynard fans rushed in. At 8:00 the concert began and for two and a half hours Maynard played very entertaining jazz music. The highlight of the concert was when at the next to last number Maynard asked Jeff Kwasniewski to play a medley with him and his band on the stage! Finally the concert ended. The spectators left. A handful of students and parents along with Maynard and his band helped to dean up the gym and get them on their way. Finally, around 11:00 the bus pulled out leaving an exhausted but very satisfied group of people. MAYNARD FERGUSON STORMS PERRY 1. Mr Maynard Ferguson 2.
