As a teacher’s aide, study hall monitor, and most of all, a dear friend, you have made the school a more enjoyable place to work and sometimes to relax. When the chips were down and there seemed to be no hope in sight, you were the one that came through and made a success of things. If we were to start here and begin to thank you for all the things that you have shared in your years with us, we would simply need another book to accomplish it. Therefore, we chose only a few to reflect upon. We thank you for the love, patience, and understanding you have shown us, for the many times that you have gone out of your way to help us, for letting us share in your knowledge and wisdom, and for rekindling the flames of school spirit and pride. We wish you a happy and full retirement. Although this may sound like a farewell, it is not; for we look ahead to your future visits to P.H.S. as our honored guest. 3 Our Board Of Education From left to right, standing: Mr. Frank Fovargue; Mr. Bill Hoyt; Assistant Superintendent, Mr. George Tarbuck; Mr. Don Densmore; and Superintendent, E.E. He could always make you laugh and he’d try harder when you were feeling down.” E. Gill “David Perry became inspirational to many people during his hardship. 1 remember telling my wife that he was one of the bravest individuals 1 have ever encountered. Before his illness he was pleasant and never failed to say, “Hello”. During his illness, in spite of extreme suffering, he remained as before. David Perry showed great inner-strength and a grace and inner-beauty that touched those who knew him. David Perry: a student, a friend, a fighter.” R. Wilson “Dave was really a great guy and a very good friend. He fought long and hard and was brave in knowing what was happening to him. I’ll never forget the times we were together. I just wish he was here with us today.” T. Break Dave Perry Unforgettable” I’ll never forget his smile; I can see it very clear. I’ll never forget the summer, when our backs and feet were bare. I’ll never forget his hat; he wore it with his smile. I’ll never forget his wallet and chain; he brought them into style. I’ll never forget his talents— drawing and playing his guitar, And the times we spent our Sundays, cleaning in his bar. I’ll never forget his car, “Li’l Bugger” was its name. But now that he’s gone and left us, things will never be the same. We were just like brothers, and there’s one thing I just have to say, They can’t keep us apart forever. “Rick, I’ll catch ya someday.” J. Wizniak “He wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend. I admired him for all he did for others; He always looked at the brighter side of life.” Love and Beautiful Memories, Dee Rick Hayer CRATING KRfORmidG 1978 Buccaneers 1. Mallory . Rex ford. Danny Mrs. Wade . . . “Wonderful Town” On April 27 and 29, the music department presented their annual musical. This year’s production, WONDERFUL TOWN was directed by Mr. Charles Swogger. Student Director was Ginny Dilly who was assisted by Darlene Wharram. The musical was based on the life of Ruth and Eileen Sherwood. The story followed the girls’ adventures from Columbus, Ohio to Greenwich Village, New York. Ruth Sherwood, who was portrayed by Julie West, had an ambition to become a famous journalist. Her sister Eileen, played by Becky Jaborsky, decided to become an actress. In the final scene Ruth fell in love with Mr. Baker, (Jamie Peterson) the editor of a New York newspaper. Also, Eileen found true love with Chick Clark, a news reporter played by Larry Snyder. Every musical leaves those involved with many good and bad memories. Long hours of practice always seems to draw people closer together into one family. Anyone who has been involved in a Perry High School production knows that, in the end, it is all worthwhile. CAST Ol CHARACTERS Appopolous . Inebriates ... .A Fskimo Pic Man . . Robert Baker . .4. This year, as always, the freshmen came in all shapes and sizes. Although some have stopped their physical growth, many have just begun to mature and have a long way to go in the next three years. Adjustment is a big thing to the freshmen because they came from a school where eighth grade was the top class. The main difference between a freshman and a senior is the three years’ experience. 1 9 8 1 Freshman class officers from I. to r.: Kelly Bailey, rep.; Stephanie Sferra, rep.; Debby Mc-Conkey, president; Mary Lagania, vice-president; Adie Conder, secretary; Becky Farrar, treasurer. 21 James Boggs Robyn Brainard Rose Geversy Brenda Cole Adie Conder Sandy Coon Joe Craig Danny Criss Wayne Criss Aleen Crummy Oscar Cruz Sandy Cruz Jim Cusick Lukie Daugherty Tracy Davies Dave Davis Tony Davis Diane Densmorc Marcy Digman Greg DiGrandi Jay Dunken Arlene Dyala Diane l abis Becky Farrar Nancy Fish Daniel Frey Cindy Garry Charles Gentry Kim Goodin Jeffrey Goss Walter Gustafson Tim Gyure Jean Haak Marcia Hall Donald Hash Lori Haywood James Henry Karen Hill Connie Hinton Sandy Hobbins Jon Holnapy Gina Horvath Leta Houston Eugene Jarvis Arvo Jennings Connie Johnson Denise Johnston Marc Kaiser Bob Albright Sue Allen Terry Anderson Scott Antalovich Kelly Bailey Debbie Baker Donna Banker Lisa Bliss Roberta Lazarchic Jackson Leonard Lori Lett Roger Lewis Karen Lightner Don Lock ridge Kenneth Ludwick John Kromer Mary Lagania Rita Lamb Edward Lampert Cindy Lampman Sandy Lapp Elizabeth LaRuc Robert Lyons Mary Maggs Donna Mansfield Joe Marshall Judy Martin Debbie McConkey Karl McFrederick Rhonda Keener Jim Klco Janet Kidd Gretchen King Pat Kmetz Steve Kobus Jenny Kozsey 23 WHAT IS A FRESHMAN? A large segment of the funds used to operate the various athletic activities were derived through projects sponsored by the Boosters. The club also gave personal assistance at special events such as the Take-Down Tournament, The Perry Relays, and the Perry Invitational. The Universal Weight Machine used by the athletes was only one of their many contributions. With help from the Mother’s Club the group sponsored the first annual Spring Fling Dance. In the future, the Boosters hope to expand their assistance so that Perry can have the best athletic programs possible. An operational committee of the Boosters Club was the Perry Mother’s Club. The club was organized to achieve three main goals. They provided post game snacks and lunches for the home teams and for visiting teams at the High School and at Perry Middle School. As a result, their efforts promoted good will between the Perry teams and their guests. Certainly some of the group’s more visible contributions were the special items they helped to purchase. Among them were the crisp, new uniforms for the girl’s track and volleyball teams bought in conjuction with the Boosters Club. The third goal was to expand the opportunities for fellowship within the various teams. The student athletes of Perry High School would like to take this opportunity to thank these two very special groups for all the help they have provided us. The above picture shows Just one example of what they have done for us. We would, again, like to say, “THANK YOU.” Sports Golf 1977 P 0 Newbury F Pymatuning Valley 182 187 St. John 187 166 Geneva 194 182 Jefferson 194 169 Richmond Hts. 199 202 Harvey 191 182 Southington 179 213 St. John 194 168 Cardinal 189 213 Cardinal 183 194 Pymatuning Valley 189 207 Geneva 195 180 Newbury 180 216 Harvey 195 185 Jefferson 195 190 Southington F G.R.C. second Volleyball 1977 Wickliffe 15-15 6-7 Fairport 15-15 3-3 Ledgemont 13-15-15 15- 0-13 Cuyahoga Hts. 0-15-15 15- 9-13 Pymatuning Valley 15-15 13-9 Jefferson 6-15-15 15-13-7 Grand Valley 15-15 8-12 Fairport 15- 8-15 4-15-0 Ledgemont 15-15 2-4 Pymatuning Valley 11-11 15-15 Jefferson 15-15 2-4 Grand Valley 15-15 11-3 Harvey 15-15 6-11 Grand Valley Tournament Pymatuning Valley 15-15 3-7 Hawken 5-15-6 15-10-15 92 Schedules Football 1977 P 0 Edgewood 7 12 Kirtland 0 13 Trinity 12 6 Fairport 37 0 Ledgemont 7 20 Pymatuning Valley 40 20 Jefferson 28 19 Grand Valley 37 20 Independence 12 6 Madison 13 12 Cross Country 1977 P 0 Richmond Hts. 16 46 Gilmour 29 26 Kirtland 31 24 Pymatuning Valley 21Vi 29'A Ledgemont 23 36 Grand Valley 26 25 Jefferson 24 33 Pymatuning Valley 28 35 Southington 23 38 Jefferson 25 36 Harvey 24 34 Western Reserve Acad. 26 29 Kirtland Inv. tenth Malone Inv. twenty fourth Perry Inv. ninth Gilmour Inv. third G.R.C. first Boy’s Basketball ’77-’78 P O Madison 67 73 Farmington 56 90 Newbury 53 75 Fairport 57 48 Pymatuning Valley 70 85 Bloomfield 62 57 Ledgemont 65 64 Farmington 60 94 Richmond Hts. 54 75 Jefferson 53 79 Grand Valley 68 47 Southington 48 69 Fairport 79 52 Pymatuning Valley 41 79 Grand Valley 79 63 Jefferson 46 90 Ledgemont 56 73 St. John 53 61 Girl’s Basketball 77-’78 P O Wickliffe 32 55 Fairport 29 35 Ledgemont 42 26 Harvey 31 45 Pymatuning Valley 25 47 Cuyahoga Hts. 23 49 Southington 39 22 Grand Valley 25 35 Fairport 39 41 Jefferson 30 33 Pymatuning Valley 24 60 Wickliffe 21 64 Jefferson 24 30 Harvey 28 32 Grand Valley 19 36 Ledgemont 51 29 Lakeview 21 53 Boy’s Track 1978 P 0 t Berkshire 71 51 Softball 1978 Richmond Hts., P 0 Jefferson 50 62 Southington 12 1 1 Ledgemont 113 14 j Pymatuning Valley 8 7 Fairport 75 52 Fairport 26 10 Jefferson 59 68 ‘ Jefferson 6 7 Pymatuning Valley, ’ Grand Valley 6 5 Bloomfield 89 63 7 1 Fairport 4 6 Harvey 65 62 Harvey 8 4 Perry Relays Fourth Grand Valley 2 1 1 G.R.C. Title Team unity and pride characterized the Perry Cross Country team this fall. The Perry Harriers exhibited team enthusiasm, dedication and hard work all season which eventually paid off for these young men when they outclassed the field in the GRC Championship Meet. The Pirates also had a fine dual meet record (9-3) against a very competitive Cross Country schedule. The mark of a good team is one that can overcome failure and achieve success; for without disappointments, one does not realize how sweet the joy of victory is. The Pirates were a good team. The pressures of each match were found to rest on their shoulders. The initiative they took under the coaching of Charles Swogger helped transform the year into a winning season. Fortunately for the Pirates’ football season, there were more peaks than valleys finishing with a very good 7 wins and 3 loses, and the Tri-Championship in the Grand River Conference. The Pirates started out slowly, losing the first two in a row and three out-of-five, but put together a dedicated team effort and won the next five in a row to finish the season with a nice string of victories. The final game summed up the type of football team that Perry exemplified throughout the year. Arch-rival Madison was trying to make it 16 years in a row in the battle for the “Little Brown Jug”. In 1977, it was a different story, however, as the Pirate Football team gallantly fought back from a 12-0 deficit on a snow, ice and mud Blue Streak field to capture a thrilling 13-12 victory. The entire team, school and community seem to have taken on an entirely different attitude because of the Pirates’ enthusiasm and pride generated by all involved. 1st row: D. Wharram, D. Gentry, D. They were second in the G.R.C. with Clifford Brewster, Jerry Klco, Dave Pom-ietlo, and Dave Erkkila taking firsts. The mat men took a first in the Haw-ken tournament. At sectionals, Joe Biddle took a first, Joe Judd, and Darr-rell Beahon took seconds, Dave Erkkila and Dave Pomietlo took thirds, and Sherman Portell took a fourth; this qualified them for districts. The team as a whole finished fourth. They voted Dave Pomietlo, with a record of 9-1 as most valuable wrestler. “The Perry Pirate Senior wrestlers would like this year’s success to be credited to head coach. Jack Huxel, who in eight years of love and dedication for the sport, has taken Perry from a nothing in wrestling to a feared competitor in Double-A area competition. Coach Huxel was the kind of coach who lived each and every one of our matches with us. He felt our sorrow and lived our laughter. This year was his last year as head coach of the wrestling team. He has resigned because of his home situation and his higher rank in the National Guard. We just hope that our school system can find someone to fill the large set of shoes coach Huxel is leaving behind. Thanks, Hux, for sticking it out with us.” Varsity Row 1: Bill Hope, Jerry Klco, Cliff Brewster, Joe Biddle, Sherman Portell, Joe Judd, Gary Mullins. A last second heart-break loss to Wickliffe, coupled with several other close losses, left the girls with a final record of 9-6. The team, which was made up of sophomores Penny Crofoot, Lisa Fiske, Tina Eldredge, Kim Brainard, Lisa Eldredge, Lori Brown, Lori Lipus, and freshmen, Adie Conder, Mary Maggs, Debbie Skytta should provide a sound basis for next year’s girls’ basketball team. 117 The 1977-78 Pirate basketball team was a blend of youth-four juniors and a sophomore played for the varsity. Along with senior co-captains Todd Hinton and Ken Siegel, they fought hard through a rebuilding campaign this season and finished 5-5 for third place in the Grand River Conference, and a 6-13 overall record. Todd placed on the All-Northeast Ohio first team, and was voted Most Valuable Player in the G.R.C. He led the team in scoring with an average of twenty-four points a game and D.R. Trisket chipped in with eleven. Senior, Ken Siegel and Junior, D.R. Trisket received All-G.R.C. honorable mention. Those who saw the team play, however, know they played much better baseball than the record indicates. The team struggled with poor weather, injuries, inexperience, and a tough schedule which included many AAA teams. They were beaten often, sometimes badly, sometimes barely. Despite this, the Pirates hung in there with only eleven players, kept hustling, and kept giving 100% effort to win. They were a well-disciplined ball club, complimented by umpires and opposing coaches for their character. It’s not easy to keep your head up as an athlete when you’re far behind in a game. Many teams gave up and started complaining, made excuses, or looked for short-cuts. This team didn’t do that. Led by MVP Ken Siegel and seniors Larry Snyder, Dave Klco, Dick Shreve, and Darrell Beahon, The Pirates made the best of a dismal season. They may have lost on the scoreboard, but they had a lot of guts, determination, and just plain love of the game. That’s important. 126 aA. 1. The team stayed together and played well all season. Next year holds a definite promise for a repeat of this year’s season. Dances sponsored by the Pep Club after selected games also help to boost our school spirit. New additions this year are the seasonal sports banquets sponsored by the Pep Club and held in the school’s cafeteria. They sponsor the coaches and athletes. To raise money, they hold raffles, bakesales, and also sell Perry Pirate charm pins. The parents also help by working at the bingo games to assist in fundraising. The officers are Darlene Wharram who holds the offices of president and treasurer. Tire secretaries’ duties are done by Gretchen Smith and Teresa Sullivan. The publicity is very efficiently handled by Lynn Montgomery and Micky Meyers. 1. Pep Gub mania in progress on Spirit Day activities. 2. Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service-these are four goals we all strive towards. We have chosen this group, not to show that they are better, but as an example of the fine qualities in all of us. The persons elected to this organization have received a great honor, but they also have an even greater duty. It is their duty to promote the four ideals of the National Honor Society, through the development and use of their own character, scholarship, leadership, and service. 157 HUBURN CriRGGR CGNTGR DCT-L. After this page there are only re fleet ions-reflect ions of time that disappeared while we were deciding what to do with it. Now that this time has gone, we remember the forgotten “thanks” that so many ears would have welcomed. Thanks for being part of our livcs and reflections. Whenever you take this book out of the dust that surrounds it in the years to follow, recall these reflections. In this final page and in closing this book, we have ended our years together, but now we begin to build reflections of our own. Nineteen Hundred Seventy-fight
