Text from Pages 1 - 36 of the 1943 volume:

♦ PERRY HIGH SCHOOL PERRY, OHIO 4 Dedication On battlefronts the wounded lie, At home the loved ones weep, Still others fight the mighty foe, And some in death do sleep. They're dear to us, yes everyone. They're sons who bravely went, O'er land and sea to face the foe, Where mighty men are sent. And so it's to these dearest boys, We dedicate this book, With all our hearts we honor them, And wish them loads of luck. E. A. J. Student Council ...............1 Vice President 1 2 Varsity Club ..................2 Play: Our Town Class Histd V Twelve years ago in ’31, we entered Perry School Miss Nichols and Miss Helen West taught each and every rule. But discipline was rather poor, ’til Miss Margaret did appear And gave us those stern glances which in time we learned to fear The temper of our third grade teach’ was really something new Miss Anthony had red hair and we were black and blue. The teachings of Miss Langshaw really started things to whirl She made us learn to multiply—yes boys as well as girls. Mrs. Champion and Miss Kneisley helped along in our career For the fifth grade class grew bigger—we added more on every year. Again the sixth grade class was large, and we became divided. Mrs. Corwin and Miss Kneisley grew gray as they presided. A great big jump we then did take, to the great big junior high. Our teachers grew in number as we did grow in size. It was then we learned the drawers of our desks would open And if we left them that way it wasn’t a rib that was broken. Our eighth grade class was smaller—back to its normal size For we had dropped the morons—boy we were getting wise. Yes, the wisdom of this lowly class made everybody wonder If we would ever graduate—we were on the way — by thunder. Ah—listen folks about the love that hit our Freshman class George, and Bob, and also Chuck took lessons from a “Sweet” lass. Honors now for our dear class were beginning to appear. The girls took to music and sports for the boys so dear. Not much gain was made that year in either of our courses But give us time you important guys, we’ll show ya where our force is. We needed not much time, as you’ve probably heard the rumpus; For ’twas our girls who traveled to Kent and to Columbus. Yes, the Sophomore class was very proud to have members in the chorus. They really sang their hearts out for our Government, victorious. Nothing happened along the line of the so-called sports career, But all our fellows needed was the experience of a year They gained that experience and went to town to win for P. H. S. The champion of Western Reserve in football, that you guessed And also in our Junior year it always is the duty To sponsor a Junior-Senior Prom_____ours sure was a beauty. Our enrollment increased by three that year—Dick, Geneva and Gerry. They heard about our super-class. That’s why they moved to Perry. Out of our way you lower classmen. We’re the seniors now — YIPPEE We’ve waited twelve long years (and how) our diplomas for to see We started off with a great bang, an annual we had planned, But with the war plus rationing our ’43 Souvenir we banned Our graduating class at first, numbered twenty-five all wise (?) The armed service then did call to claim two swell guys This Senior Class of ’43 sincerely wish, hope and pray We’ve brought some happiness to Perry that will forever stay. We scoffed at those who said we’d be sorry when we were through But now we’re feeling mighty sad as we bid P.H.S. “Adieu.” CLASS WILL OF 43 We, the members of the 1943 graduating class, being sane and sound of mind (we hope), do hereby make, publish, and declare the following to be our one and only will and testament. To these persons and things we do bequeath our fortunes: Ruth Averill wills her speaking ability to Alfred Safick. Muriel Brooks wills her gleaming red hair to Martha Szaniszlo. Betty Burt wills her powerful legs to Laverne Ge-deon. Betty Freiberger wills her collection of waste paper in her desk to anyone who can make spit-balls Gerry Haas wills her coy manner to Hertha Pohto. Emma (Rheba) Jabs wills her ability to play character roles to any up and coming actress. Neva Johnson leaves her ballet slippers to Loretta Jones. Cleo Phillips wills her petite shape to Peggy Heve-sey. Catherine Rhoades wills her shortness to Ralph Bunnell. Edna Skinner wills her dimples to Miss Skidmore. Ruth Smith leaves her rippling giggle to Millie Beach. Janet Sweet has already willed her book, How To Get Your Man and Keep Him, to Mrs. Few alias Miss Krathge. Thelma Terry wills her ability to tell moron jokes to Richard Roath. Geneva Van Dyke leaves her absent mindedness to Dolly Johnson. Betty Werner wills her love for sailors to Sara Burnett. George Bartlett wills his manly physique to Alex Horvath. Bob Carter leaves his love for small brunettes to Charles Peattie. Joe Dunlap leaves his high grades in math to Don Locke. Paul Golding leaves his love with Jinny Hietenan. George Kucera leaves his blonde hair to Roger Seith. Charles (Casanova) Neu leaves his flirting ways to the bashful freshmen. Charles Oliver leaves everything he can't take with him, either because it is too heavy or being watched. Dick Spring leaves his drawing ability to Jimmy Peterson. Ernest Szaniszlo wills his shyness to Rich Warren. Arthur Warren wills his ability to milk cows to Chesla Phillips. The Senior Class leaves a worn-out faculty. The foregoing will and testament was signed by the said Class of '43 and witnessed by: Yahoodie from Shangrala The Mean Little Kid A Moron from the Junior Class PROPHECY Ruth Averill—Ruth's ambition is to be an angel of mercy. She's going to be a nurse, and you can bet that she'll be a good one, too. We're expecting all her men patients to propose to her. Be sure to catch a rich one, Ruth. George Bartlett—George's idea for the future is to be an engineer. He thinks that he could have a lot of fun trying to figure out some brand new kind of airplane. We're sure he can do it, too. Muriel Brooks—Muriel's planning to attend Ohio State next year. She's not quite sure what she'll do in the future, but it will be something along the medical line. The only thing that worries her is college chemistry. Betty Burt—Betty's heading for the cosmetology business. You just wait and see—she'll own her own beauty shop some day. We can picture it in our mind's eye. Burt's Elite Super-Deluxe Beauty Salon —only $90 a treatment. Bob Carter—Bob's dreams for the future center around being an aeronautical engineer. He thinks it's up and coming thing of the future, so he's going to up and come right with it. We wouldn't be a bit surprised if he invented a rocket plane to the moon. Joe Dunlap—Make way for Joe, the mathematical mastermind. He's planning to become an electronic research engineer, whatever that might be. Most of us don't aspire this high, but Joe can do it. We'll find him sitting calmly at the top of the heap some day. Geneva Van Dyke—Geneva wants to follow along in the nursing line. With her quiet, soothing ways, we believe she'll be a good influence on her patients—which is something we won't say for some of the students of P. H. S. Betty Freiberger—Betty hopes to be a secretary some day. You needn't worry about her, either. She's really going to be one. This girl will laugh her way up the ladder of success. Paul Golding—Paul's dream is of owning his own farm. None of this fancy stuff for him. He believes that being a good all-around farmer is the best job in the world. We predict that he'll be an outstanding farm leader in Perry a few years from now. Gerry Haas—Gerry is another one of these future secretaries. Her marvelous efficiency in shorthand foretells her success in this field. We ought to know. Who always transcribes out shorthand for us? Emma Jabs—This girl is planning to be another Florence Nightingale. Not only that, but Emma's really going places in her career. She plans to specialize in surgery, and if the zealous way she sliced up those poor animals in biology lab is any indication, she'll succeed without any trouble at all. Neva Johnson—Neva is our musically-minded girl. It has always been her ambition to teach music. We can already see her trying to teach some tone-deaf high school freshman how to play a clarinet. George Kucera—The Marines is George's shining goal. His great ambition is to be a pilot in the Marine Air Corps. Good luck, George. You'll be one of our toughest Leathernecks in the near future. Charles Neu—Charlie's going to be a farmer, too. Not only that, but he intends to be an A-l farmer. We're just waiitng to see how he's going to grow more potatoes on one acre of land than anybody ever did before. Charles Oliver—College training for industrial management in Charle's streamlined goal. We predict a rosy future for him as a successful business man. We can just picture him sitting on a comfortable chair with his feet propped up on the desk, behind a door with beautiful gold letters on it—Charles Oliver—General Manager— Whifflebottom Whistle Works. Cleo Phillips—Here comes Rosie the Riveter. Or should we call her Cleo the Riveter? This member of our class seems to think that her main dish is to be found in a factory, so she's not going to waste any time in getting there. In a few short years, we'll be hearing about Cleo Phillips, the great woman factory owner, who started as a humble riveter. Catherine Rhoades—Dynamic Katie insists that she's going to be a WAAC. She doesn't know just how she's going to get around the age limit, but she's sure she will manage somehow. And it there's ever such a thing as a woman general, that will be Kate. We'll remember her as Catherine Rhoades, the woman Napoleon. Edna Skinner—Secretarial work is Edna's ambition. The efficient way in which she is secretary to the teachers makes us sure that she will succeed. But here's one little warning, Edna. Better stay off the Boss's lap. Ruth Smith—Dress designing is Ruth's hope for the future. She's really going places in this career, if we can judge her by those gorgeous styles she is always drawing in Sociology class. Dick Spring—Dick's not sure about his future career, but we've figured out what we think he ought to do. A college presidency would be just right for him. Someday the old class of 1943 will read about the noted Dr. Richard Spring, president of Harvard University, who has kindly consented to give the graduation address at his old high school, in Perry, Ohio. Janet Sweet—This girl's skill at a typewriter always amazes us. Undoubtedly she is the best typewriter whiz in old Perry High. Janet can do all her own typing at double-quick time, then do her boy friend's, and still have time left over. This convinces us all the more that she will be a real success at her chosen career as a private secretary. Ernest Szaniszlo—We're expecting to find Ernest in the big city in a few years. He'll be getting along just fine in something complicated in mechanics. Mechanical engineering happens to be Ernest's dream for the future, and we want to wish him loads of luck for a successful career. Thelma Terry—Irrepressible Terry has wanted to study art ever since she was in the sixth grade. So that's just what she is going to do. But somehow, we have a suspicious feeling that her natural bent will express itself in cartooning. What about it, Thelma? Arthur Warren—Arthur's in love! Girls? Nope— cows. Arthur's great ambition for the future is to own absolutely the best herd of Guernsey cows in the country. Who knows? Maybe he'M become famous by breeding the celebrated purple cow we have heard so much about. Betty Werner—A receptionist's position is Betty's hope for the future. Someday we will walk into some important office and find a poised and efficient Betty in charge. We really believe that she will attain her goal, for Betty has everything that is needed for her chosen career. We, the members of the 1943 graduating class wish to extend our appreciation to our sponsor, Mr. Sahli, for bringing us successfully through our Junior and Senior years. Thanks loads, Mr. Sahli, we are very grateful to you.
