Not Pictured: Jason Baker. edicafion With a willing spirit and merry smile, They transport us o'er many a mile, On basketball, football, and baseball sprees We're carried rnost everywhere we please This is a job involving care, And can you say-and still be fair- That theirs is a lot of obscurity? Of course you can't-you'Il all agree. By now you've guessed just what I mean But if not-may I explain? To you, Busdrivers, we raise a cheer, And dedicate our Souvenir! I oaewaab An oak tree is known as a symbol of sturdiness and dependability. For this reason, we have select- ed it as the theme of this yearbook. Its trunk represents the school, its officials and teachers, the leaves are the students, for they're constantly com- ing and going, the branches are the various activi- ties which add variety and new interests to the school. With the passing of time one forgets so much of the humor, the excitement, the triumph of high school life. The Spring Dance, the Prom, that English class, the first date, the Christmas Luncheon, confidential chats in the library. All these typify school life, but are soon forgotten, not from lack of interest, but rather from the rapid pace of life. Thus to renew these old memories we present to you the SOUVENIR. With this we hope to have completed a year of glorious work. S . ' J .. . 7' ' 1 N , f ow. gciwoi, out -fi., What should our school and our flag mean to us? lt should mean a place of opportunity, and a place to better ourselves in the course of life which we choose to take. This not only gives us a chance to make a place for us in the world, but also helps us to be better citizens of America. Our flag should be a symbol of freedom and peace. The three colors of the flag are Red, White and Blue. The Blue represents justice. White is for purity and cleanliness. The Red is the blood of brave men and women who were willing to die, or worthy to live for America. The school and the flag are being put into the younger generation, so let us keep these valuable meanings and symbols of our flag, for if we lose them we no longer have our school or our flag. Richard Warren Seventh Grade PERRY, FOR YOU Our school is an emblem Of spirit and fair play. Long will she stand thus- As a shrine of our today. Proud are we of our charity And standards high in aim. Win or lose we will ne'er refuse To try to play the game. CHORUS: Perry, for you we'll work and fight, We'll honor your name, Perry, for you we claim the right To spread far your fame. Courage and loyalty, Qualities dear to all, For Perry, our Alma Mater, To us you will reign o'er all. Gilbert W. Porsch, l94l HlllllllllSlllHlIllll The people of America are the roots and up- holders of our prized democracy. So the roots and trunk of the tree are the upholders and bulwarks of our education. The school is the trunk with its sturdiness and efficiency. The faculty and admin- istrators are the propagators, and our foster par- entsg for they guide and teach us the things nec- essary to make us good citizens in this democracy W of ours. x i ll l , I f f Z l fx -,ff X !f ff ' X l ' g 54 l XT? i ,X if tu that ll -f lQ?'llTR5f'l1iyl 23559 'Rgxf l syfgi gg' Q' L22 u+L1w' xl if iff f M Vai R. So here's to Mr. Few-may he always be as kind, considerate, and helpful in the future as he has been in the past. Here is the board who bravely shoulders the complaints and demands of eager students. To them we owe the many privileges afforded our school. Behind locked doors they de- cide our fate, a fate which has proved favorable to the utmost. To them we offer our most grateful thanks. Tooflmll The Perry Pirates football team traveled to Madison for the first game of the season and came back with the satisfaction of holding their pet rivals down to a scoreless tie. They then tackled the Painesville Reserves and took them over i9 to 7. With hope in their hearts they swooped down on Mentor only to be key-holed to the score of 28 to O. One thing we didn't feel so bad about-Mentor wound up the sea- son undefeated, unscored upon, and untied. Then the Ashtabula Reserves sailed to our home waters only to be sunk to the score of 37 to O. The Pirates than paddled to Painesville to show them how the far- mers could really play ball and plowed them under to the tune of Zl to O. As we got bolder we hiked to Fairport for a scrimmage with their reserves and whip- ped them with a 25 to 12 score. Chagrin Falls then came down to our field with a twinkle in their eyes only to go home sobbing because we spanked them to a l-4 to 6 defeat. Then came the Chardon Mountain boys totin' a wicked shootin' iron only to be mowed down 7 to 6. These Mountaineers really carried the weight for they were the heavies of the season. The final game of the year was the Pir- ates' greatest victory for they walloped the Wickliffe Blue Streaks to a beautiful score of 37 to O. This was the first time that Wickliffe was ever defeated by little Perry. All in all we wound up the 4O season pretty happy with second place tucked under our belts for the Western Reserve League, much of the credit going to Cap- tain Dick Palmer, husky Pete Thompson, and Coach Hawkins. They celebrated the end of the season with the traditional Football Banquet, put on by the PTA mothers. Captain Palmer was voted most valuable player of the year and our star fullback Pete Thompson elected captain for 4l The school owes the success of the Pi- rate team to Coach Hawkins who had the patience with the boys and drilled them to winning perfection. 34 Charles Oliver QB George Bartlett HB Pete Thompson FB and Jim Zinn HB Bill Jones LG ond Jack Heil LT Clyde Lopham HB Rich Palmer C Bob Carter HB Chuck Hull LE Wayland Warren RG Dick Thompson C VARSITY First Row: Charles Hull, P e te Thompson, Sterling Averill, R i c h a r d Palmer, Clyde Lapham. We then went to Madison and we knew it was going to be a corker. They beat us out 24 to l8. Next we dribbled to Mentor and they took us 3O to 22. Our first home game brought Painesville down to Perry. They sent us to the cleaners 6l to l9. We certainly are gluttons for punish- ment! Chagrin trounced us next 46 to l5. Chardon came next and, boy, we won a game. Yes, sir, 34 to 26. Wicklitfe trot- ted over here and we had the game in the bag until some stiff sunk a foul. We were goners-26 to 25. 36 Well, we traveled to Kirtland just to get it again, 38 to 32. Well, well, welll l-lere's Spencer and gosh if we didn't take that game 3l to 24. But it seems we can't always win. Mentor came to Perry to take the Pirates 4l to 20. Next came Chardon to Perry's nice maple tloor. Yep, we beat them a second time 3l to 2l. Chagrin came dcwn to see us. That's right-we lost again 40 to 26. Well, folks, l guess we might as well close the end of the season with a little glory. We were surely glad to see our boys lay one on Madison with a score of 37 to 3l. Even it we didn't win all the games we put up a good fight. Thesei are Richard Palmer, who plays third base, and Pete Thompson, pitcher. Others getting their spring exercises are Charles Hull and Junior Kucera on first base, Bob Carter on second, and Clyde Lapham playing shortstop. mil Hoyt and Dick Thompson will stop the ball behind the plate. Warren Chapman, Pete Thompson, Joe Dunlap, Bob Carter, and Jim Secor will try to strike out the opponents. lf these pitchers aren't working right we have George Bartlett, Chuck Oliver, Jim Zinn, Wayland Tenkku, Lawrence Brew- ster, Wayland Warren, and Paul Golding playing in the outfield to stop those long flies. Our schedule this year will be two games with Mentor, two with Kirt- land, one with Chardon, two with Chagrin, one with Chester, and one with Thompson. We may have two or three more games but Coach Hawkins has been unable to find opponents. Even though we have a great many green players, the Perry Pirate Base- ball Team is going to win that trophy again this year just as they have in the last two years. 38 ff' ' I ' ix 5 ' f KK I gf ifix? 1 X C WD ' 0' , , 'xx , ef ff, fff 3 M ' l,l !'!j,:l in f' f l' L ACC I DENTALLY ON PU RPOSE Glee Club: Poor Mr. Porsch and his changing voice . . .
