Early in the year it was announced that the services of Mr. Clarence H. Post and Mr. Frank Perne of the Lansing School of Music had been secured, and that half of the expense of lessons would be borne by the school. A great interest was shown and regular lessons and ensemble practice soon began. The orchestra made unusual progress, considering the great number of members who were learning to play. Much praise belongs to Mr. Post and Mr. Perne, who by their friendly guidance, made this organization a success. During the year the orchestra appeared at Parent-Teacher Meet- ings, The May Festival, and a recital sponsored by the Lansing School of Music. THE MAY FESTIVAL Another new feature of the year was the May Festival presented May I5 and I6 by the musical organizations of the school. Wednesday evening, lVlay I5, the Festival opened with the production of the one-act musical comedy Cynthia's Strategy , with rnusic by John Wilson Dodge and lyric by May Hewes Dodge, by selected members of the High School Chorus. The characters were: . Cynthia May Perry fthe girlj Frances Burns Smith Stanley Young fthe boyj Lorne Ferry Adelaide Susan Perry fCynthia's motherl Elizabeth Loomis Eugene Stephen Perry CCynthia's fatherl Caroll Roosa The four main characters were assisted by a chorus of eight members. The question for this year's debating was Resolved that a Federal Subsidy for the Development of an American Merchant Marine would be a Wise National Policy. The Hrst negative debate was held at Gaines on November l6, l928. Al- though Gaines put up a hard fight Perry won by a decision of 2 to l. The last negative debate was held in our own High School Assembly December 7, l928, with New Lothrop as the opponents. Again Perry won, the decision being 3-0 in their favor. . These two debates ended the successful work of the negative team and Coach Swarthout immediately turned her attention to the interests of the affirmative team. The team realizes more than anyone else the service, en- durance and patience. with which lVliss Swarthout coached. Too much credit cannot be given her whose untiring efforts were responsible for whatever amount of success was attained . PAGE T XVENTY - S I X AFFIRMATIVE DEBATING TEAM Jean Leggett - First Speaker Herbert Estes - - Second Speaker lVlajeI Euler --------- Third Speaker On january I I, I929 the Affirmative team made their first appearance at Potterville, although a very stormy night a good audience greeted them as they took their places. The debates were very close and the constructive speeches and the rebuttals were even. Potterville won, however, by a 2 to I decision. The team was not discouraged for the debate brought much to their credit, and it indulged with more vigor than ever in the tactics of debating. The last debate of the season was held January 25, I929 in the Perry l-ligh School Assembly with Holly as their opponents. Again the affirmative lost the decision being 3-0 in Holly's favor. These two debates ended the debating season for Perry as they were un- able to enter further eliminations for state championship. The following Monday morning Waviah Brace in behalf of the Debating Teams presented Miss Swarthout with a small token of remembrance in appreciation of her ever ready help and thoughtfulness during their recent debating season. ALL-CLASS PARTY The All-Class party was held November Zncl. This party was one of the most successful functions of the year. After they had been seated to prettily decorated tables in the Girl Reserve colors, blue and white, they were served a delicious dinner by the Hi. Y. boys. Miss Blanche Smith led community singing between courses. Afterward Mrs. Coulter, Girl Reserve advisor, introduced the toastmistress, Mrs. George Winegar, Sr., who in turn cleverly introduced many speakers and musical entertainers. The Girl Reserves were given a toast by Mrs. Winegar, who responded with a song, Follow the Gleamf' This affair was one of the most important social functions of the year. ATHLETIC BANQUET A very successful banquet was given by the Athletic Association at the Woodman Hall, Friday evening, March 15th.
