DeForest, Vice-Principal l0l l:IfLCLyO6lf if l'VL6:556Lg8 fo gl 0L6!IfL6Llf85 I am pleased to extend my best Wishes for your educational success and a satisfy- ing life. Actually, there is a relationship be- tween educational success and a satisfying life, for education has been defined as 'ithe process which makes a mature adult of a childf, and certainly one Who exists in a state of immaturity Cannot have a satisfying life. The objectives of education are to give meaning and clarity, to raise questions, to solve problems, and to develop continuity. This continuity of learning which leads to maturity cannot end with graduation from high school but must continue through life if one is to become truly mature. I exhort you, therefore, to become continuous learn- ers and to immerse yourselves in an educa- tive environment, for it is difficult to be- come a mature adult-to be unselfish, to keep out of a rut, to admit error, to begin again, to make the most out of little, and to endure success-but it always pays and is the only Way to a satisfying life. Auf La Perry opened the season by traveling to Monessen for an exhibition game, Where the Commodores, though hopelessly outelassed, played Well despite the lopsided 40-0 defeat. XVith the city league season about to begin, many of the people connected with the team were optimistic as to the Commodores' chances. These dreams, however, lasted only until the first city game when Langley clob- hered Perry, 62-0. The shock of such a terrible defeat seemed to have a lingering effect, and Perry never recovered until the second half of the final game of the season. Before recover- ing, the Commodores lost to Allegheny in a mud bowl, 13-0, and to Gladstone in a riot interrupted game, 13-7. The Perry eleven also lost to Oliver, 45-0, and to Fifth Avenue, 26-0. Perry lost the final game of the season to Carrick, 25-13, but while losing, the team ajelledf, Perry trailed 25-0 at half time, but in the second half the Commodores clearly outplayed Carrick and perhaps gave a hint as to how the team will perform next season. ..5...J Fifth Avenueys halfhack breaks through for a crucial first down in the second quarter of the Perry-Fifth Avcnuc tilt. 1. .nf l 2.3?J,1?vLx:1ws4sr Front Row: I. Two hard fought games ended in disappointment When Perry tied Peahody, 0-0, and North Hills, G-6. The Commodores suffered their three defeats against Taylor Allderdice, North Allegheny, and Oliver. Al- though the Perryites went winless, Coach YVeitzel helieved that the teain had gained valuahle experience for future varsity partici- pation. EHUSS EUUNTHY In the Autumn of 1962, Perryis thinclads had a disappointing season. They defeated Oliver twice and lost to Langley, North Alle- gheny, Allegheny, and Fifth Avenue. Out- standing for the team were Al Marks. who went to the All-State Hnals at Penn State, Franz Schon, team captain, Stan Gnrski, and Mike WVettling. QVLAUQVLQC! fA8 g6Ll4fL8f5 With cymbals crashing and trumpets blar- ing, Perry,s Band marched out on the field during half time. At the sight of the blue and white uniforms of the bandsmen, spectators came to expect lively entertainment between halves at the football games. Every Monday morning the Band met with Mr. Ambrits to rehearse music and marching routines for their many and various performances. Three of Perry's bandsmen qualified for All City Band this year, they were Franz Schon, first trombone, Richard Heastings, trumpet, and Leslie Shumann, flute. They played in the Civic Arena on February 12, 1963, for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Al Mascari, Sam Turner, and Iohn F roehlich exercised drumming skill at the pep rallies that preceded the games. One of the seniors who will be missed by the Band was Ricky Mattern, Who had led the trumpet sec- tion for three years. Many of the graduating seniors will be replaced by hopeful new Band members. 2:2 Carey Fitzpatrick, Perry,s left guard, talks with the umpire and Oliver boys before the bitterly fought Perry- Oliver game! v I Perry's majorettes display their skill at the Perry-Oliver gamc. fda? gave g armour fo XZWW 4yo0rIf5 Front Row: M. Another of the cluh's projects was collecting hooks to send to the Veterans, Hospital in Oakland. Members also made Hallowejen favors for the Veterans. For another project, members collected and recon- ditioned toys and dolls. They also filled ten Christmas stockings for local needy children, using proceeds from the sale of corsages to help finance this project. Two of many more projects were: making vases out of detergent bottles for hospital patients and organizing a variety show for patients at Dixmont. . . . AQCCLIWLQ 61, 05f6l l96Ll 6lfLi Front Row: M. Members learned how to do multiplication and division problems, how to find powers and roots, and how to do propor- tion problems by using the slide rule. This club not only helped students with their high school mathematics but was invaluable for those continuing their education in college, where the knowledge of using the slide rule is almost a necessity. There was no limitation to club membership except that students had to be interested in learning to use the slide rule. Al Hammer demonstrates to ,loe Profeta, Gary Kulil, and Nancy Hcastings the method of working out a problem on a slide rule. fAQy l0fL6LiA fA8 8065? WEL? F1rstR0w: N. Heastings, R. Brinkman, I. Perry then fell victim to Lati- mer, 2-0, with both Latimer scores gained on penalty kicks. Perry finished their season against Knoxville, tying them 2-2. Knoxvilleis score came on a goal, the only one to dent the Perry nets all season. Despite the winless season, Mr. Nasierow- ski was pleased with his teamis showing and was especially pleased with the play of goalie, Jack Sterling. Mr. Nasierowski summed up the season saying, VVe had a good defense and would have won some games if we just could have scored some goals! Mr. Nasierowski explains the strategy for the Perry-Knoxville giune to Joseph Ogrinc, YVillia1n Pietz, and Roderick Patton. George Hazlett takes his practice cuts as Jeff Parrish catches.
