We have changed the name of our book from Perryscope,' to Commodore',. This change ends the confusion between our yearbook and our newspaper, both of which have been called the Perryscope for many years. The following pages, filled with memories of work and play, help us to tell this story - our story. Dedication We, the crew of the Perry Commodore, have had a stirring adventure during our four years at sea. Now, as we walk down the gangplank, we recall the many incidents we have shared on this voyage. At the helm of the ship were our captain, Mr. D. R. Douglass, and our executive officer, Mr. Homer Sutherland, whose untiring and patient guidance helped us weather many storms. To pilot our ship, there has also been the faculty in- terested that every class and activity should sail along smoothly under expert navigation. Mr. Hoerger, the log keeper, has always been ready to chart our courses and anchor us firmly in our studies. We remember also those others who have labored and provided for our comfort. As our cruise draws to a close, we leave this our log to the succeeding senior crew and embark to explore further. We hope our new ship will prove as seaworthy and reliable as did the Perry Commodore. Table of Contents Faculty Seniors Classes Sports Activities Patrons lgm- Six 1 And Now To Add The T T Nlr. S ecretary SEVENTH GRADE From Chatham wc filed into old Perry High, With doubts and small fears, but a willingness to try. With eyes filled with dreams of a future bright, We left our first year with anticipating delight. Page Fifty EIGHTH GRADE Now one year advancedg we came back for more, Preparing ourselves for what was in storeg Joining in clubs and attending different games, Coming closer and closer to our far-reaching aims. NINTH GRADE New students came in to double our sizeg From small foundations we were beginning to rise. Rooms 312 and 111 we occupied this year, Reaping more knowledge and memories dear. TENTH GRADE As sophomores we dwelled more on fixture plans. Of Perry's football team we were still faithful fans. Homework and clubs took up most of our timeg But on up the ladder we continued to climb. ELEVENTH GRADE Into our junior days we weaved work and fung Our pattem for life's work was practically spun. Excitement over class rings came and then wentg On important activities more time was spent. Now with graduation just a semester away, We wonder what will happen 'til that hoped-for day TWELFTH GRADE Will there be waiting, disappointment, or surprise? Will we become happier, maturer, and wise? We know it is impossible to see what has been planned But we're hoping that our last year will be spectacular and grand. The class of 1955 is the last one that consists of students from both the country and the city. Since the new North Alle- gheny joint High School has been completed, all former Perry- ites living outside the city limits no longer attend Perry. Our home room teachers, Miss lean Boggs, Mr. Hugh T. Russell, Miss Mary L. Gibson, Miss Theressa Matz, and Mr. Michael Zukovich, deserve much credit for their wise counsel through the years. Nor would we forget those who took over so capably when Miss Gibson and Miss Matz were away, Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Brown, and Mrs. Kiester. VVe leave Perry, aware that we have completed no small task. Our hopes and wishes are that those who take our places may enjoy their high school days as we have and that they will continue to maintain the high standards that we have tried to uphold. But that verdant color of our class was in no way inferior to that of any previous class. After we Freshmen had been introduced and had become acquainted with this new mode of living, we showed our school spirit in our response to the call of membership to those activities that admit us. XVe have also shown our loyalty by attending games and by faithfully supporting our teams. Nor have we for- gotten our subjects, and we have made worthwhile accomplish- ments there. Our report teachers have been: Mr. McKelvy, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Ambrits, Miss Snodgrass, Miss Miller, Mrs. Haase, and Mr. XIcKeon. Page Seventy-om CN!! Y K Some Fresh try their hand at art. OUR GLORIOUS PAST The 1954 football season saw Perry Held a fighting team which was in contention for the Section II championship title. The high-spirited Commodores worked as a well drilled unit un- der the head coach LeftyD Cordon and offered stiff competition to their rival opponents. After making a Weak showing at the start of the season by dropping their iirst two exhibition games to New Brighton and Mt. Lebanon, Perry settled down to good hard football and won the next iive games. The closing game of the sea- son against Carrick for the Section II champion- ship proved to be the downfall for the Com- modores, as Carrick was victorious. In closing the season with a 5-3 record, the entire team deserves much credit for its fine performances on the playing field and its team spirit. Among individual honors won by Perry ath- letes during the season were the Most Valuable Player Award by co-captain john Fedunok and the selection of Tom Scherer and john Fedunok to the All-City Team. Honorable Mention hon- ors were awarded to the tackles, Ed Snodgrass and Harry Finke, and to the two backs, Rich Klavon and Iim Waldron. The Perry Commodores traveled to New Brighton for the seasonis opening game and there suffered their first loss by a 19-13 score. Second on Perry schedule were the Mt. Leb- anon Blue Devils Who turned back Perry 33-20. Page Seventy-nine The turning point of the season came during the Bellevue game, as Perry, hungry for revenge, smeared the opposition 38-6. Leading 32-0 at halftime, the Conunodores used their second and third teams to give them experience, thus little scoring was done. The Commodores opened the league season against powerful Allegheny. Right from the kickoff the game proved to be a hard-fought battle, featuring outstanding football on both sides. However, Perry, sparked by Tom Scher- er's pass catching, won by a 26-13 score, thus sinking Allcgheny's hopes for a winning season. Perry's game with Langley the following week proved to the team that you canit rely on past laurels. Trailing 13-0 at halftime, Perry capitalized on a blocked punt hy Fedunok and a pass to Scherer to set up two touchdowns. The extra points were good, giving Perry a 14-13 victory over an under-rated opponent. The Commodores, eager to continue their winning ways, trounced their arch rival, the Oliver Bears, in a game at Oliver High Stadium by a 28-0 score. As in past encounters this game proved to be a rough and tumble affair, but Oliver, completely outclassed by the lighting Commodores, was Hnally overcome. Perry next met Fifth Avenue in a game at the Perry Field which proved to be one-sided. Fifth Avenue, being completely outclassed and outplayed, left the field holding the tail end of a 46-0 score. Perry scored at will during the entire game and received only a few threats by Fifth Avenue to score. The Commodores, in the final league game against the Carrick Raiders, absorbed a stun- ning 20-3 defeat. The Raiders led at halftime by a slim 7-3 margin due to a long run by a Carrick back and Perry's failure to score a touch- down from Carrickis 10-yard line. The play in the second half centered in midfield until the last four minutes, when Carrick scored twice to achieve its victory. Basketball Perry's varsity basketball team finished the 1954-55 season with a not-too-impressive record. The Commodores, over-all record shows five wins and twelve defeats. In league competition Perry's hoopsters won two and dropped ten as they finished in sixth place. Individual scoring honors went to Rich Kla- von. Ed Garland took the school record with thirty-six points in one game. Some of the brighter moments during the season came in dropping a tight game to Lang- ley 71-69 and in the exciting win over Allegheny Vocational 75-42. Page Eighty BASKETBALL TEAM Kneeling: C. This year,s aqua-men Went through a rather unsuccessful season of swimming. The Com- modores, lack of experienced swimmers and in- terested boys proved to be a handicap in this sport. Perry was defeated in the seasonls opener by a score of 43-32 at Butler High School. The close- ness of this meet was shown by the fact that the winner was decided in the last event. ln their second attempt away from home, the Commodores missed the honors by fourteen points, bowing to Westinghouse 441f2-30Vz. Continuing in fine spirit, the home team chalked up another victory at the following meet with Carrick. The Perryites trounced the Carrick men 46 to 27, advancing their winning streak to two. South Hills proved to be the hoax to break the winning streak at the fol- lowing meet by a score of 51-24. Oliver, Allegheny, and Langley had no trouble overthrowing the home squad in the following three meets. Oliver won by a score of 58-15. Allegheny followed with a 54-21 victory over the Commodores, and Langley finished off the season by winning 55-20. VVhile the Perry team took only two out of nine meets, the drafting of several likely prospects for 11ext season brings hopes of greater successes. Cross - Countr X-C0 UNTRY TEA Kneeling: T. The 1954 Commodore cross-country team, sponsored by Coach Smith, had an outstanding year, winning three dual meets, placing second in city and tenth in the state championship meet. The Hrst meet took the team to Alcoma Country Club Where the Penn Indians were defeated easily. Fred Dickey took first place in this meet. Next Latrobe High invaded Riverview and gave the Perryites a lesson in how to lose gracefully. The bright spots in this meet were Dickey's victory and the good showings of George Downer and Bob Hrisak. Brentwood was the next to try its luck against the high-flying Commodores. Brentwood was no match for Perryis team and was easily defeated. Fred Dickey capped the individual honors in this meet. Page Eighty-four The men in green from Allderdice were next to visit the Riverview course and came within three points of sinking the Commodore's ship. Perry finally pulledi through 29-26. Don Watzman of Allderdice won this meet, Dickey took seeon . In the final dual meet of the season Perry journeyed to Schenley Park and took on a good Langley team. Led by their star runner, Paul Jessup, Langley sent the Perryites down to defeat. The city championship followed. Perry, Langley, Allderdice, and South Hills were entered. Langley once more proved too strong for Perry, and the Commodores were forced to settle for second place, fifty points ahead of the third place team. Paul Jessup took the honors as individual city champion, followed hy Don Watzman of Allderdice, Bill Morrow of South Hills, and Perry's Fred Dickey. Three Commodores, Fred Dickey, George Downer, and Dick Brush, finished in the Iirst ten. Perry qualified six runners for the state championship at State College, Pennsylvania. In this meet Dickey placed eighteenth, a high for a Perry runner. Downer placed in position fifty-three, Brush, seventy-eight, Bob Hrisak, ninety- fourg John Hrisak, one hundred five, and Ron Blasius, one hundred twenty-three.
