Mrs. Yockey became our homeroom teacher and gently led us through our orientation. We tried hard to look as though we belonged, but only time could erase the bewildered look from our faces. Soon, to our surprise, Junior School officers were chosen from our class, and now as 9-Ais we made our home in 110 under Miss Blayney- During our first year at Perry we talked about:- Milroy-Ifll look like an old student if it kills me-I don't see how they know we're freshmen- I didn't want to take general science in the first place-But Mrs. Yockey, I still don't know how much x is-uVision of Sir Launfalgv That's a book, Miss Dickey?-Why did I wait until the last night to read Ivanhoe?-But they told me the Senior rode in elevators. AS SOPHOMORES- We entered into the Senior School ioyfully. We moved to 220, which was to be ours for eternity, or till graduation if youid rather. AS .I UN IORS- We emerged from our Sophomore year with slow, really Perryites now. In 11A Mr. Berry replaced Miss Waddell as our home room teacher and sud- denly we discovered that the school hadn't forgotten us. Members of our class were nominated for Vice President and taken into National Honor Society. Then we were talking about:- Our stars on the swimming team-I'm going to limit the nights I go out and really study this semester, Honest, this time I really mean it- Those huge English books-Bookkeeping prob- lems, But the assets don't equal the liabilities- Our debate on Jet planes-The Latin students who had their marks lowered from A to C-Our C0-Ed Volley Ball games 5th period-Put the water in before you put the H2SO4-You mean we have Hygiene every day!- Gaily Bedight, A Gallant Knightv-You donit speak shorthand, silly-Ben Franklin was the biggest egotist. AS SENIORS- Worldly and wise, we entered our Senior year. We had our Prom at the South Hills Country Club in June with the class of ,5l. We also shared their Senior Play. Our class had diminished to 26 and before we knew it our plans for graduation were made. In our last year we were talking about:- The Prom-The Senior Play, Well, maybe we donit have the leads but-Home room meetings- Dinner Dance-Christmas Cards-Class Day- Themes-Charleston-'LTO be or not to be - College-Just 26-Bogi Club-Graduation Pic- tures, Do I really look like that?-O. A ll the Teachers LOG 7TH GRADE This was our first stop on the journey. We landed in Junior High School, all looking forward to a new world. The first day we were assigned to Room 5, under the supervision of Miss Anna Tisherman, now retired. During this year our class collected more Good-will bags than any other class. It was really an eventful year that we shall never forget. LOG STH GRADE During this stop we found many changes in ourselves. We felt bigger and had bigger ideas. Now we started taking part in school activities and clubs. Our girls formed the first Girls Basketball Club. All the feeling of satisfaction that we had in ourselves soon disappeared when one of the seniors looked at us. 9TH GRADE What a big advancement we made in our trip this semester! The first morning we found our- selves invaded by those yellow rocket ships from the country packed with all our new friends. Mc- Naugher also sent a group of students this semester. All of them soon were our best friends. We were very proud of Dan Daugherty when he made the football team and of Glenn Billeter when he was elected president of the Junior School. Probably the most important thing was that we chose our own subjects. When we look back, this year really zoomed by faster than seems possible. LOG 10TH GRADE September, 1949: This semester more students joined us from West View. They brought with them many talents and suggestions. At this stop our class was divided into five different home rooms, and we began to mix with students from all over the school. LOG 11TH GRADE Before long it was announced that we were to be measured for our class rings. ln 111 that night after school was over, everyone pushed and shoved to be the first to be measured for his ring as though it would bring the rings much sooner. It seemed so long to wait, but before long we were proudly flashing our rings around. As we glided through this semester, a few of our teachers left us. Miss Tisherman, Miss Wyman and Mr. Camp- bell joined the group of retired teachers. Our boys were now stars on the football field and in basket- ball. We all realized that the big day was coming closer and closer. LOG 12TH GRADE September, 1951, the class of '52 began the last lap of their journey. Traveling thousands of miles per hour, the destination seemed millions of light years away. Mighty Seniors! From our rocket we viewed all those below with a sneer re- served for underclassmen. Good resolutions were made by all. Some kept them, but others were not so consistent. We sailed into Thanksgiving vacation, giving thanks that the end was in the not too far future. We proudly joined the clubs reserved for seniors only. Pictures were taken. When received, we heard a few gasps such as, Is this me?,, and 'LDon't you love my complexion ? Christmas approached. The boys took off-to the Post Office. After Christmas we received our graduation cards. Everyone was working madly to make good grades for entrance into college and other fields. We said Goodbye to our only group of upper class- men, the 12A7s. New class officers took their places at the controls and with Bill Santom as Comman- der-in-Chief of the School and John Wyssier as class president we headed for our desination in earnest. Broken only by Easter Vacation, the at- mosphere became thinner as we were grappled by the whirl of '4Growing Painsf' Class Day, the Prom at Edgewood Country Club, Baccalaureate and Graduation. And then the climax. We landed into the Changed World. lt was a happy moment for all. For some, it marked the end of an exciting ad- vancementg but for the majority, only the begin- ning. We were a bit sad because we knew we were never going back: but our real thoughts were for the future, hoping that those behind us would make their journeys as memorable to them as ours had been to us. There they put in a week of rough, tough, and tumble football. On their return to school they spent a week of sharpening up their new tactics for the onrushing season. The Commodores opened up their 1951 Foot- ball Schedule against the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils at Mt. Lebanon Stadium. On the opening kickoff, Billeter took the ball on the 2 yard line and raced down the field behind good blocking to give Perry a 7-0 lead. Perry was never headed after this and came out with a 13-7 victory- Perry next traveled to Wheeling, West Virginia and here, hampered by injuries and swelled heads, were defeated 28-111- The Commodores played the last of their three exhibition games against Little Washington at Washington, Pa. Perry, outclassed by their heavier opponent, were shellacked lo the tune of 21-0. Perry opened its League season against the Oliver Bears, our arch rival, at Oliver High Field. The Blue and White completely outclassed and out- played the Bears, but because of tough breaks and miserable officiating were beaten 13-12. Perry's TD,s were scored by Santom and Dougherty. Fifth Avenue, next on the schedule, was de- feated by the Commodores at South High Stadium. Perry playing a fast and deceptive game eked out a 13-12 victory. The game was highlighted by San- tOlIl,S 75-yard downfield run on a reverse play- Perry next took on the Carrick Raiders at Oli- ver Stadium. Although the Commodores played hard and aggressive football, they were beaten by the Section Champs 28-6. Suto scored Pi-rry's lone tally. In a more professonal brand of football. Perry defeated Allegheny 28-21. The game was high- lighted by Billeteris passing, Sutois educated toe. and Patterson's all-round play. The last game of the season Perry played at home on a wet and dreary day against Langley, whom they slaughtered 28-7. The game was featured by Katusin's great defensive line play and the of- fensive running and passing of Perryis backfield. Although the team played only .500 ball for a fl--fl record the whole team must be commended for its superb play and its unever say die spirit- The team is losing many standout performers such as liatusfn, Knable, Salomon, and Cook in the line. and Billeter, Santom. and Dougherty in the back- field. Nevertheless they should held a good team again next fall. Among the awards won by the athletes was the coveted MVP won by Glenn liilleter, versatile tailback who also made Honorable Mention along with Center Jim Salomon, while Bert Patterson. great offensive and defensive end. made the All City Team. The whole school appreciates the effort put forth by the coaches and the team for staying in there and trying hard for the 'fldlue And The White. Henry Mayo, Clean Hflcter SWIMMING This yearis swimming team was built around young, aggressive fellows, in an effort to build stronger teams for the future years. There were only four seniors on the squad, two of whom were February graduates, Chester McLaughlin and Dale Dunn. The other two seniors, Hugh Coulter and Jerry Studeny, both swam the same event, the 120-yard Individual Medley. The backbone of our squad, the youngsters, proved they were out to win this year, despite their youth, by capturing six and losing only one. Our first win came over Butler -16 to 29- Our next win came over Connelley Vocational 39 to 35. To start off the regular league season successfully we trounced South Hills '19 to 26. The Trunkmenis next victim was Allegheny 50 to 25. Splashing along in high gear, Carrick also fell , ' , r before the Commodore onslaught. After these meets we were flying high. but were brought back down io earth by Oliver, as the Bears handed us our only 1952 loss 57 to 13. To finish the season we traveled to Langley to win -l-7 to 28. Our team this year consisted of: Nick Wagman. Stewart Sell, Don Corry, Warlie Vflhite. David Nor- ris, Eugene Adams, Frank Simons, Ray Jeffries, Fran Skillen, Don McBride. Bob Hite. George Mc- Clone, Rich Anton, Tom Wiegman, George Trivoli. Nick Giardinia, Hugh Coulter. Hon Christopher, Jerry Studeny, Don Woodrow, Dale Dunn. Chester McLaughlin. Many thanks to our coach, Chester Smith, who gave us the best of assistance and an incentive to win. Ron Christopher, Manager gy 4, I G 5 X ..-. .:- it sl 25a CRUSS COU N TRY This season Perry was represented by a very able Cross Counry team. Though with only one veteran, Clarke Vollbrecht, back from the preceding year, the team heat every team in the city. The team ran live meets and lost only two. The two were lost to the WPIAL teams of Brentwood and Wilkinsburg. The complete team roster was: Clarke Voll- brecht, ,lim Smith, Don Woodrow, Bill Ritter, Bruce Roberts, Dave Norris, Dick Anton, George Trivoli, Dick Shorrer, George Neiler, Dick McKinney and Buzzy Killmeyer. Most people were surprised by the fact that even though it was Coach Smith's first year at train- ing a Cross Country squad, he vame up with a championship team. ln the City Championship Meet, Perry tied BASKETBALL Perry's Basketball team showed marked improve- ment over preceding years as their overall record was 10 wins and 6 losses. ln League competition they won 7 while dropping 5, which was good enough for a 3rd place finish- As a team the Com- modores racked up 888 points, against the opposi- tion's 802 points. Their one game high was 65 points against Allegheny on the home court. Individual scoring honors went to Bob Darkey who hooped 291 points to be high scorer of the City League. Bob also broke two Perry records this year by breaking Arlan S. Straub's old record of 270 points for one year, and 34 points in one game, which was previously held by Glenn Billeter who had 31. The scoring of players was as follows: Pat- with Langley for the Co-Championship. At this meet Don Woodrow came in 2ndg hotly pursued by ,lim Smith, 3rd and Clarke Vollbrecht, 4th. Then came Dave Norris, 14th, Bill Ritter, 18th and Bruce Rob- erts, 23rd. This meet made it possible to send six Perry men to the State Meet at State College, Pa. There they placed 11th out of thirteen competing schools. Vollbrecht came in 37th, Woodrow, 46th, Smith, 51st, Norris, 89th, Roberts, 114th and Ritter, 1l9th. Though the team didn't win, they did a good job of representing Perry. This concludes the summary of a very good season for all concerned. The team would like to thank Coach Chester A. Smith for such wonderful guidance. Don Woodrow, '52 Captain RUUN DU P terson, 184 Billeter, 172, Corsello, 92, Suto, 533 and Salomon, 38. Some of the better games of the season were Perry's two overtime defeats to Langley and Car- rick by the scores of 48-47 and 60-58. Perry showed complete dominance over their Northside rivals by defeating Allegheny, Oliver, and Allegheny Voca- tional twice. Perry also came back to defeat Langley 56-53 on their home court- Perry will be weakened by the loss of such senior standouts as Captain Billeter, Corsello, Salo- mon and Santom. However, Perry should produce a well seasoned crop of hoopsters next year under the capable guidance and direction of Coach Fehrenbach. Henry Mayo, Glenn Billeter GIRLS' SPIDRTS Although the girls do not enjoy the thrills of competition between the teams of this school and those of other schools, they have a pro- gram of intramural sports that keeps them happy and interested dur- ing the school year. Under the direction of Miss Ora Sanders and Miss Mildred Snodgrass, the girls learn to lead wholesome, well- rounded lives. Teams are organized by grades, and tournaments are played to determine the winners in each grade. The most complete programs were conducted in volley ball. Badminton was played too in certain grades. The high point medal winner for the 12 A's was Virginia Ball, in 9 A, Sue Allardice won that honor. Eleanor Haas won the award for outstanding leadership. Q1 X - . V JS, I5 it: T El? -126- Q91 aussi?
