As I sat gazing into the open fire, a huge, white brick building, surrounded by torrid tongues of flame, sprang up from the 'burning logs. My memories returned to that building, Perry High School, where the four happiest years of my life were spent. The sca-ttered embers and glowing knots of wood became a group of youngsters, straggling up the steps of Perry to their first glimpse of high school life. Thinking of school reminded me of the old, musty photograph album, that I have cherished all these years. Picking it up, it fell op-en to a picture of Dr. john H. Adams. That brought to mind our first day. The welcome speech he gave us was so inspiring, that, as we left the auditorium, each student was determined to do 'his best. Our freshman year was -eventful in that we were separated from some of our oldest friends and were -placed with strangers who were distined to become our new classmates as well as our friends. Also wehad to 'become accustomed to finding our way through a seemingly enormous building, we got our first glimpse of life-preparing subjects, and we all became adjusted to high school life in general. There's the picture of our Sophomore Class. Weren't we an alert looking group of students ! ! ! We were all eager to do our best, even though it did require a lot of time, but somehow we always managed to get it done. My, this picture is well worn! The picture of our football team! I still remember how we used to stand for two hours in the rain to boost Perry on to another victory. How we entered the various clubs! We w-ere certainly always willing to support school activities! Looking up from the album and gazing into the fire, the licks of fllame seemed to paint va portrait of our Junior Class, after it had been enlarged by a group of students from Hamilton. They were a super gang and fitted right into our 'eleventh grade family. Sadness settled over the class 'as we were separated into three home rooms during the first half of the eleventh grade. Miss Waddell f111j, Dr. Cretzinger 11041, and llvfiss Altsman 0095 were our guiding lights. We were much happier wh-en some of us were recombined under the leadership of Miss Waddell in the last half of our Junior Year. As the pine began to smoke, the fireplace sent forth huge smoke rings which brought to mind the day we got Page Twenty-six ei is 4 if if R , GL - I it . ' I i 5 . me as . As here 1S a picture of the boys from our class who were on the football and basketball teams. The Juniors took to sports with a new enthusiasm because members of our own class were eligible for the team. What's this? Why, it's a picture of some seniors. Now, why did I ever have that in this part of my album? Ch! now I remember. Every member of the class took on 'a new air of importance because we were ready to embark upon the most important journey of high school lifeh-Our Senior Year. Scanning the title page brought back memories of the students who doubled so as to graduate a semester early. Cur different little get-togethers afforded many an evenings entertainment. Here were Ray Bairhialter, Robert Ballinger, Ernest Beven, Charles Covert, Bill Jones, Bob Koepp, Jerry McNeiT, Tony Pedone, Bill Purse, james Siebel, Bob Wasliixigton, and james Veverka, who were the repref scntatives of our class in the armed forces. Thinking of our Senior year reminded me of our graduating pictures, the senior play, the Section II football championship, 'and baccalaureate. Why, here's a picture of Miss Anderson 0151 and Miss Straessley f208J who took over as navigators the last half of our Senior Year and chartered the course to our destination-Graduation. I looked on in the album, and tears came to my eyes as I came across the picture of our class in caps and gowns. I remembered how we all marched down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstancew, each filled with his own thoughts of the past four years-and a thought, too, of the future. Here is the last picture, a picture of Perry High School, the Alma Mater of which I 'am very proud. 'I closed my album of memories and leaned back and watched the fire. The visions of all my school life had passed before me and left me with tearfstained cheeks. I closed my album remembering how graduation had left an empty feeling in our hearts to be filled and consoled only by memories. I began ,to dream of years -gone by. All my old classmates passed before me, and I realized all had mapde good. A great many had succeeded in the business world and many in the professional fields. Gradually I drifted back to my own graduation some fifty years ago. How well I remembered it! It seems the Second World NVar had spread chaos all over the world, and over oneffifth of our class joined the armed forces before Commencement. I can see 'them now: Ray Bairhalter, Bob Ballinger, Everett Beven, Al Brimmeier, Charles Covert, Bill Jones, Bob Koepp, Bob McCall, Jerry McNeff, Fred Milito, Tony Pedone, Bill Purse, Vince Reubelt, James Siebel, Jim Veverka, and Bob Washixigtoii. Some of these fellows stayed in the Armed Forces and made it their life work, others returned to civilian life and entered various fields of business. Of those who were able to stay for graduation, many served Uncle Sam fer fl short time affcrwarrl. I can remember well back in 1965 when most of my class mates were at the Zenith of their success. Ted Layland, the business magnate became president of the Moderxi Plastic Company, a very extensive and profitable business. Ruth Campbell, Betty June Gutberlet, 'Marjorie James, and Betty Jane Sauers were all employed as secretaries in the large office. Sharing the ponderous duties of direct' ing the company were the able vicefpresidents: George Kourakos and Jack Wehner. They were assisted by their secretaries: Margaret Kelley, Betty Neptune, Edna Mae Stockman, and Margaret- Woodsideg Lillie Belle Lewis was the skillful switch' board operator. Richard Hunter, advertising manager had a nationwide reputation for artis-tic genius. Angie Paschaledes, his efficient secretary was kept quite busy. Popularity of plastic products was greatlyiincreased by the keen sales force of Don Adams, Tom Perka. Howard Pruss, and John Yoedt. Daily 'advertising was done over station P-EfR-RfY, by a variety program headed by the clever fashion ex-pert Aldena Hedge and her models, Jane Cashdollar and Anna Frazier. Music was presented by the Milito Trio featuring Freddie on the saxaphone, Don Kaufman at the piano, and Tom Richards at the drums. Vocals were offered by the Harmonettes: Christine Baird, Nancy Eayre, and Betty Grace Omundsen. Lorraine Kimmick fascinated the audience with 'her splendid acting, and Doris Jacoby presented rhythmic dances. Research for plastic development was conducted by the renowned chemist, Beverly Robbins, and her assistant, Virginia McCullough. New products were originated by the chief engineer, Frank Pittman. Under the leadership of Bishop Hines, M. D. and Dr. Hilda Evans, and their nursing staff: Jessie Logan, Audrey Ludwig, and Gertrude Hoolahan, an extensive safety program was carried on in the plant. Others not connected with the worldffamous Moderii Plastic Company sought their fortunes in other fields. Jim Boyd became a well known farmer. Chuck Frazier was America's Heavyweight Boxing Champion. June McConnell and Mildred Schumacher became outstanding business women of the East. Fran Lachimia gained fame through his exclusive fur salon. Margaret Allerdice, a de' signer of fine clothes, became a byword in American fashions. She was assisted very capably by Dorothy Assad, Louise Banks, and Helen Jacoby. In the field of education, P. H. S. University, under Chancellor John Burns became a center of culture and learning. The University also excelled in athletics, under the coaching of Fred Peirish and his assistants Lou Soller and Dick Fisher. The local newspaper under the editorship of Harry Wineniaii, had the names of the famous Barbara White and Nancylee Darby on its reporting staff. Karl Fahrion, Gus Meder, and Ted Vassar held positions as sports editors. They kept Gunther Sturn, the chief printer, quite busy with their numerous articles. James A. McCort, circulation manager, with the aid of his two assistants, Ellen Diley and Lillian Rossel, kept the paper in financial,balance.-Yes, that class of 1945 certainly was a successful one. We were amazed at the size of the school, the crowds of students and the uabilities of the seniors. Most of us were fairly certain that we'd do all right but we were a little nervous. As We climbed the ladder of our future years at Perry, however, we gained an air of importance-we were a part of Perry. Our class grew not only in number but also in friendships, when in ninth grade it was enlarged by students from McNaugher, Chatham and Nativity. And again in eleventh grade by those from Samuel Hamilton. Nightwork increased in intensity just as a snowball increases in speed as it rolls down a hill. But with it all, our work wias lightened by the many enjoyable school activities, and our new friends. In ninth grade we -put on a Christmas Play which was very successful. We took part in other school activities too. In 11A we participated in the pageant for Dr. Adams and our own school musical, Romance , When Dr. Adams left in the middle of july we were not only sad, but felt as if we had lost part of Perry. However, we found Mr. Carson a great friend and help to our class. My, didn't we feel proud too, when in 11A we received our class rings. It seemed we had waited for them such a long time. In 12B we all received our graduation pictures. Most of them were good and we were interested in seeing everyone's. These pictures were exchanged among all our friends and are remembrances that we shall always -cherish. Our class members became important personages in the school. We had football players, track stars, those who took part in radio broad' casts, cheerleaders, actors and actresses, an editor, and many other members who attended council. And then as time went on, as it always has, we discovered that many important members of our class were leaving for the armed forces. One important and well liked man returned to Perry, however, from the service. He was Mr. Douglass, who is again our vicefprincipal. Members of our class bought war stamps and bond-s and hoped that they were shortening the war and also helping a Perry boy who was out there fighting. And then our last semester began. We were on the last rung of the school ladder-12A. Our class officers were chosen wand joe Richardson was elected president, It was decided that although Little Women was given as our senior play in the fall, that another play would be given in May, entitled Papa Is All . This play was a success just as Little Women had been. Thus, from now on, Page Sixty A W J, T7 C11 9 6' R M A 62 a' N - 3 it? i ,g oof as in QV fi ' XM sf ' X -c.f4..4 I 3' I a t ,.,. ,,.. - si .s :D .v the senior plays will he given in the spring instead of the fall. During our school days the championship swimming meet and championship football -game were played. Although Perry lost both, the scores were so close that we were all quite proud. Tests such as High Honor, Civic Club and scholarship 'applications were given. National Honor installations, and plans for work after school were cer- tainly in the limelight now. During the last weeks, our Class Day was given. It consisted of vaudeville show and was greatly 'applauded by those who saw it. Later in the season words were written to Pomp and Circumstance to be used as our school hymn. The gala occasion, that meant a grand evening for Perryites occurred when our prom took place. It was held at the William Penn Hotel in the Pittsburgh Room, June S. Everyone had a super time and really looked super tool Music was played by Joey Simms. Our sponsors were Miss Anderson and Vlvfr. McKcon. Baccalaureate was very impressive and the sermon that we heard did much 'toward making us even prouder that we belonged to such a fine school. And finally in the evening of June 15th, our commencement took place at Heinz Auditorium. As usual the boys who were graduating were bedecked in dark blue robes and hatsg the girls were pictures in white. The subject of discussion, held by six members of our class was, Milestones of Peace. Music was supplied by the musically talented students, and then the service awards were presented. Those receiving them were overfjoyed. We 'all had big lumps in our throats, and many had a funny 'tight feeling in their hearts when we received our diplomas and realized that this was our really last day of high school life. But although we would never again take part in Perry's classrooms, we knew we would often return to visit Hour school. And so with fond memories and high hopes for the future, the class of june '45 departed from Perry. JOAN JOHNSON LOIS MICKEY Page Sixlysone v . Our fastfworking team was 11Ot quite fast enough for the boys of the other City League teams. Twelve games were played during the 19444945 season. Perry scored two wins from Allegheny Vocational, but came in second best in the other ten games. Only one member from last year's squad was on the team this year. Practice began late in September on the hilly terrain of Riverview Park. The Commodores participated in many duel meets and one trifmeet. Most of them were held at Schenley Oval with the exception of the trifmeet with Brentwood and -Central Catholic at Brentwood School. The team made a good showing in these meets as well 'as in the City 'Championship Meet. John Wilsoiu, captain of the team, had the distinction of placing first in all of our meets. He was also first to break the tape in the City lChampionship Meet. Bill Paljug placed fifth in this meet, and both Wilsoim and Paljug were eligible to travel to Penn State for the State Championship Meet. Wilson finished tenth in the State and came in first among the Pittsburgh Public School contestants. All in all the Perry trackmen completed a successful season this year. Later in the semester some very exciting games were introduced. They were snatch club, scrimmage, toboggan, and kickpin ball.
