Although most of the old gang seem to be enjoying the reunionalaughing and talking over old timesfthere is one serious group in a far corner, On going nearer, we find that it is Tim Martin, earnestly trying to secure votes from the big business executives, Robert Weber, Roy Witzel, Laurence Meiniger, and Bill Waag, for their candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, George Eichelman. Mae Pearl Pugh, designer of the exciting new ujillm creations, breezes in with her secretaries, Betty Heckel, Virginia Meyer, and Gladys Phillippi, and the Powers model, Erma Brandt, just as Ida Milito, singer with the band, croons ene of the new hits of the musical team, George Huckestein and Edward Connell. just as Ida finishes, in rush three trained nurses, Irene Rubacky, Jean Brethauer, and Claris Kaufman, with hospital dietitian Betty Barbarine, all breathlessly ex' plaining that they were late because they met an accident on the way and had to give first aid to the victims. Conspicuous by their absence are Betty Jones, iMargie McElroy and Bill Westlake, who are still recovering from the ordeal of writing the Class Prophecy, and are physically unable to attend. CLASS HISTORY fAY back in '37 on a cold blustery February day, a group of small frightened ' boys and girls crept into the huge auditorium of Perry High School. Here, with other new students we listened to Dr. Adams, as he told us of the duties and privileges of Perryites. From here we were taken to Room 97 fnow Room 21, our report room, and met our new report room teacher, Miss Tishcrman. At first we all herded in a group while an upperclassman took us from one room to another. As time went on, we got to know our way around the halls as well as if we had gone to Perry all our lives. We signed up for clubs and did many things in an entirely different way from that which we had been accustomed to do in Valley and Chatham, our previous Alma Maters. Next year fwe were then in the eighth grade, of coursej we regained some of our confidence by seeing pupils still smaller than we. Although we were still young fry to our upper classmen, we considered ourselves very proud, for we were now of some importance to Perry. At last we could show our initiative by selecting courses to further our ambitions. When we entered the 9th grade we were quite the thing Qso we thoughtj. But this grade also brought about quite a change. Many new pupils joined us from McNaugher School, and our room, which had been together for two years, was now split up. We were changed into three report rooms: Room 209ffMrs. Yockey. Room 318ffMr. Stratiff. Room 32Of Miss Knox. fThese room numbers have also been changed since then.j We also selected our entire course now. Some took a General courseg some, Business, and others, College Preparatory, and all the time we were entering into more and more of the school activities, climbing higher and higher. ln the tenth grade our class was divided into two report rooms instead of three. In 10B they were Miss Waddell in 111, and Mr. Landis in 318. In 10A Bliss Waddell's room was moved to Mr. Ralston's in 106. Vfe graduated from juniors and were members of Senior High School, although we attended lnterf mediate Assemblies. Our class members were eligible for sports and we began to take more and more important roles in student activities. The First part of our eleventh year saw our class broken up into three self' governed groups. It was not until the middle of the year that we fully organized ourselves. After a long and tiresome wait our rings finally arrivedg although the year seemed to go entirely too fast and before we realized it, the seniors had graduated and we were led into our twelfth and IHOSIZ important year. Here we are at lastf -Seniors. Only one year left, and then it will be all over. Under the able guidance of Miss Eber and Mr. Landis we expected to whiz through the nnal year with easefwell, maybe. How the weeks flew past and there we were ordering pictures, commencement invitations, and appointing committees for the Senior Prom, taking tests for high honor, tests for this and tests for that. Several more weeks flew by and thenf-Graduation Night and we were Perryites no more. We felt happy, and yet sad because it left an empty place in our hearts. We assembled in the auditorium where the rules and regulations of the school were laid down. Then we were sent to a report room with fellow trainees. It was new adventure for us so we were more than eager to learn and do all we could. We gradually became acquainted with our cofworkers and instructors, admired the Seniors, thought it wonderful that we recruits could mingle in a beautiful large cafeteria, and take time off from studies to swim in a modern pool. NVe worked hard for two years to pass exams which would entitle us to t-ake a second course in prefflight training, but we made it. When we started our advanced training we found a hatch of recruits that had been sent from MeNaugher and Nativity, and others who had been trans' ferred from different fields. We now had to choose our subjects so we could major in some particular branch. We settled down for more instruction and upon receiving it were advanced to our final course where trainees from Hamilton joined us. 'Then came a change which upset our plans' the War. Many of our boys did not wait to Hnish their instruction here but left to serve our country and fight for our freedom. We did what we could at home by helping on our ration boards, by writing letters, knitting and sewing, and entertaining those in the service. We were feeling pretty low but were perked up when we got our rings, and were elected to the National Honor Society. Then to top it off the Activity Ticket came into use. Since there was a variety of tickets to suit each case everyone got the kind he wanted. This brought about interest and lifted the morale of all our squadrons. Then came our pictures, one of the best football and basketball teams in our history, and a successful Senior Play, Ever Since Eve . On the side we took Physical Fitness courses and organized Victory Corps clubs which were of great value and enjoyment. Then when we were just about completed with our studies and had started dreaming of class dayfthe xpromfand graduation we received a great shock in the sudden loss of one of our group, Estellia Sloop, an Editor of the Perryscope who wrote beautiful poetry which was an inspiration to the school. And now that we have worked from Sophomores, to Juniors, to Seniors, and are about to leave our training station to take our place in the different fields, we want to thank our Chief Director, Dr, Adams, and the Faculty Instructors who gave us the helpful boosts up the ladder toward graduation from Perry in 1943. YEAR BOOK PROPHECY N the night of June IS, 1953, Butch Perry picked up his newspaper to see what was going on. His hobby was to collect articles from newspapers about L'his graduates and 'arrange them in classes according to the time they graduated. Therefore, he was always on the lookout for familiar names. After reading the newspaper and clipping excerpts of interesting articles, the section for june, 1943, looked something like this: LOST PLANE FOUND The passengers and crew of the plane that has been missing for two weeks, have been found near Hawaii. All were safe but very weak, The crew conf sisted of Edwin Ernst, pilot, Jack Voelzke, cofpilot, and Florence Happ, hostess. Among the passengers were: Dorothy Piazza, noted journalist of the Perry Magazine, Howard Simon, surgeon of renown, who has offered his services to the Chinese government, Howard Hook, a member of the American Counsul in China, and Howard Krall, a foreign correspondent. NEW COLLEGE FACULTY The University of Perry, located in Perrysville, Pa., will be open for students in September. The heads of the different departments include: Paul Samaras, Head of the Physics Department, Ellen jane Wfynn, Head of History, Marguerite Menzel, Head of Music, Frank Kovanic, Head of tMiath, and James Baer, Head of Chemistry, Marjorie Farrell, Head of English, Marion Johnson and James White heads of the Department of journalism, and john Marous, head of Fngineering Department. This college specializes in medicine, of which Martha Flaig is the head, and the other members are: Geraldine Schueler, Helen Fabina, Virginia Duro, Ann Staud, Ann Schaeffer, Audrey Gaskill, Jane Moore, Audrey McGrail. NURSES' CONFERENCE By .Margaret Huckestein The United States nurses of the past war have been attending a conference, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland, in honor of the heroic deeds of the war nurses of all countries. Among those from the United States are: Peggy Aim Congalton, Vernette Coles, and Arda Vonderheid. BOAT RETURNED Marjorie Shea has just returned from Europe, where she has been for the past month on a fashion tour. She was accompanied by Marion Grogan, Dorothy Kegg, and Eleanor Twigg. Ruthe Sager, returned to New York a week ago from South America. She was on a similar tour. Miss Sager was accompanied by Lois Eichenberg, Marjorie Torkler, and Ruth Aupke. Coming home on the same ship were some of the leading dietitians of the country, who studied under the famed French Physicist, Paul Panagulias. FOOTBALL By Charles Heberling THE Perry team of '42 was considered just about the best in the history of the school by its coaches. Beaten only one in seven starts, they scored 183 points to the opposition's 51. A sterling backiield fronted 'by a rockfribbed line swept through six opponents and wilted only before the section winners, Oliver. Some of the highlights of the season were: In a grudge iight, Allegheny was downed 32f7 with Heberling scoring 18 points. Carrick was taken 2Of19 in a Frank Merriwell finish that saw Siebert throwing a pass to Goodworth in the last 20 seconds of play. Fifth Avenue was swamped by a Perry team at its peak! 54fO with everyone but the water boy scoring a touchdown! Our Mmost valuable player, Dick Fischer, who led in scoring with 69 points, and star tackle, Aldo Romanin, were chosen on AllfCity teamg and Will MCSTQCII, a 60 minute man in 4 games got honorable mention. The im' portance of our guards, Rich Wirth and Fuzzy Fusina, was shown by our loss to Oliver without them in the lineup. Eddie Buczkowski held down other tackle and did a fine job. Our ends, Frank Kovanic, lClark Coodworth, and Ken Vey flanked our line with great strength. Herm Rodgers, who has been called one of the best high school punters of this year, and joe Buczkowski handled our quarterbacking. Regis Finucan, our breakaway runner, Andy Siebert, our passer, Dick Fischer, our allfround back, and Charles Heberling, still at left half, rounded out the best team since 1932. THE PERRYSCOPE BASKETBALL Ken Vey ITH a record of 12 wins and four losses this year, Perry's Basketball Team had one of its most successful seasons in recent years. just falling shy of tying Oliver High for the Section II championship, Perry's league record stood at 9 wins and 3 losses. Winning the last 8 games in a row, the Perry five Hnished the season in a blaze of glory, only to be disappointed with second place laurels. Starting the season at home, the Commodores took their worst heating first, losing to Connelley 41f31. Following this, came victory numher l, with the Cagers tripping the Alumni 33fl3. Visiting Avonworth for the iinal pref season game, Perry triumphed again, 3628. League competition opened at Langley High, the home team edging out a 41f4O win over the Perryites. South Hills visited Perry next and took home a 46f38 victory. The quintet finally ran up its First league victory trouncing Allegheny Vocational on the home court, 5127. On Perry's rest day from League opponents, they engaged Avalon and won in an exciting overtime 32-29. Perry then visited Oliver to lose hy the close margin of 38-34. Finishing up the first half with successive wins over Carrick and Allegheny, by the scores of 52f33, and 43f32 respectively, Perry's record at the half stood at 3 wins and 3 losses for league games. The second half started with a bang as the Cagers picked off Langley, 42f37, and South Hills in a last minute decision affair 32f31. In playing Allegheny Vocational the second time, the team hit its high water mark in scoring, smashing the Vocationals, 6547. Allegheny proved to he the next victim on the home floor as they went down hy a 52-39 count. The following game, Perry hit its peak for performance in downing Cliver 49f32. The season was closed officially at Carrick as the Commodores came out on top, 42f39. This year's personnel included Boh Hessom, Ed Ernst, Crr Belcher, Ken Vey, and AllfCity guard Frank Kovanic. Special credit should be given to Bud Heberling and Dick Fischer, midfyear graduates, who played excellent ball in their last semester. Among the reserves were Dick Fisher, Boots Braddock, Doc Buczkowski, Lou Krebs, Ed Aufderheid, Bill Heidenreich, and 'LTillie Holden. Turns at iManager, Scorer, and Timekeeper, were taken hy john Snaman, Don Adams, and Ray Lawrence. PERRY HIGH SCHOOL Page One Hundred One GIRLS' ATHLETICS THE fall semester started out with some strenuous healthfbuilding exercises, ' and the Senior Girls had a vigorous schedule of sports. Basketball teams were organized with Ma-rjorie Torkler as their manager. There are still six teams left in the tournament. They are: Bullock, Faulk, Hodel, Lambert, Lancelot, and Vonderheid. Which team will come out on top? Time will tell. Since the basketball tournament had come to a stand still on account of the boys' basketball practice, we organized two pingfpong tournaments, one under the management of Betty Hudson, and the other under Eleanor Conkel. Neither of these tournaments is finished, and those still remaining in the tournament managed by Betty Hudson are: joe Berthold, Frank Langsdale, Jack Liersaph, Jeanette Miller, jane Moore, Bill Pfeiffer, Earl Rectanus, Bill Schaefer QRicheyj, Elsie Stark, Charlotte Strothman, and jack Voelzke. As soon as we finish the basketball tournament, we will start our usual spring volleyball tournament, Qur gym classes, under the capable instruction of Miss Ethel Waddell and Miss Ora Sanders, have taken on victory action, as endurance is stressed in all our exercises. Plus points are given to those 'girls who go through the rings and jump the buck. Some of the more energetic girls scale the wall in the big gym and then climb or jump down from the balcony. Even the swimming classes have changed. All of us, having taken care of our rubber swim ca-ps, are trying to swim as many lengths of Perry's pool as possible. jean Abbott has done as many as 40 lengths in one period. We try to avoid using the ladder when leaving the pool and many of the girls lift them' selves out of the pool. Leaders' Club ?Members voted for the five most outstanding gym students and leaders, who received chenille badges. The five selected were: Margie Farrell, Dorothy Jenny, Stella Kourakos, Marguerite Menzl, and Elsie Stark. Page One Hundred Two THE pggpxygggpg SWIMMING HIS year, Perry's most successful athletic team was the swimming team. They played second fiddle to none, and their reward was the city championf ship for swimming. Perry's first meet was with Allegheny at the home pool, and our tankers came out in triumph hy the score of 5265. Perry then traveled down to Allegheny for the next meet and again sank thc 'gators hy a threef point margin of 4542. Hitting the road again, they came back from South Hills with victory number three, taking the match by the score of 4968. The next victim was Langley, as they fell to the Commodores hy the tune of 5047. Perry finished the regulation season undefeated, and on April 17th, took the city championship meet at the Allegheny pool by rolling up 34 points. Waiidrisco and Bove swam in the 40 yard swim with clothes on. In the hundred yard breast stroke, the performers were cofcaptains Jack Voelzke and john 'Marous. The hundred yard hack stroke was done hy jones, Masur, and the other cofeaptain, Tom Padden. The twenty yard under water was well done hy Frank Reed. The two hundred yard rifle relay entered the names of Voelzke, Hargrave, Keating, Sutey, and Padden. jack Smiley and Jack Curley always did well and put up a fine battle in the 400 yard free style. In the 40 yard tired swimmers carry, were Bove and Wandrisctu, and Keating and Marous. The hundred yard side stroke for Perry always had Sutey, Keating, or Hargrave entered. In the 40 yard head carry, which is the last hut not the least, were Covert, Marshall, jones, and Anderson. In mentioning the work of the swimming team, we cannot overlook the ine coaching job done by Mr. Smith. Inasmuch as this was the last team which he coached hefore entering the service, we might add that it was a fine way to end coaching duties by winning a championship. Kenneth Vey.
