Perryscope Perry High School 1980-81 Perry, Georgia Volume 36 i eg 4 New Experiences Good times walked hand in hand with each new ex- perience. Nevertheless, a student didn’t have to be in- volved in extracurricular ac- tivities to be included in the fun times during school. Rushing to homeroom at 8:28, grabbing a snack at break, cramming for tests, running from class to get in the lunch line, watching the clock tick down to 3:15 on a Friday afternoon ... all these happenings set the scene for a whole school year cramm- ed full of fun times and new experiences that will never be forgotten. 5 Having 6 7 Having friends and being one, is an important part of being a student at Perry High School. There is a strong sense between the student body and the teachers that is pre- sent here more than anywhere else. Teachers are constantly noted for going out of their way to help students, and the students are usually more than happy to extend this help to each other. No matter what color, age, or social status, one can always find a friend within the walls of P.H.S. Learning to share and to spread happiness is a quality that enhances all types of relationships. Whether one is participating in a club project, sports event, or daily friendship, each is expressing the qualities, beliefs, and values of the students and faculty of P.H.S. Sharing IMP 8 Showing Panther Spirit was ridin’ high this year. The cheerleaders, band, and twirlers put on a show that lasted the entire season. And of course, their efforts were reflected in the cheers at pep rallies and the support of the students and faculty of Perry High School. Students show- ed their spirit in numerous ways: the bonfire, door decorations, spirit week, signs, cheers, and chants. All these made spirit so plentiful that it was always present in everyone’s mind. 11 To be a Panther, one often had to achieve difficult tasks. P.H.S. was full of good students, dedicated athletes, and exceptional talent. Sometimes it was hard to ac- complish what teachers and classmates expected, but since it was demanded, only the best effort was good enough to carry on the Pan- ther name. In March of 1981, students traveled to Atlanta to participate in the State Leader- ship Conference for DECA students. The conference ended with Jane Wingfield and Jan Clayton earning the priviledge to go to Anaheim, California in June. The only re- quirement is members who are willing to work and learn. The French Club’s participation in decorating the cafeteria with appropriate slogans from the Language of love on Valentine’s Day, will become an annual affair. A bake sale” was also held by the membership in the fall which was to raise funds earmarked for the club’s long-range goal — to earn enough money so that all its members may dine on authentic cuisine at a French restaurant. This active club has also decorated and entered a wagon float” on Pep Day in the fall and purchased red and white T-shirts displaying multiple French say- ings. The Unit has been Meritorious or an Honor Unit since it became eligible in 1974. __ ROTC is more than just another class; it is an opportunity for each student to participate in the learn- ing experience of Leadership. This is accomplished in many ways. The unit is structed along military lines. It is completely operated by the cadets and supervised closely by the instructors. The cadets find there is enough freedom to “do their thing,” while following well established guide lines published by the U.S. Air Force and the Houston County School System. The course includes study about airplanes and things of an aeros- pace nature, and those involved find that these areas add toward their knowledge of everyday living. Each school quarter field trips are taken to nearby points of interest being studied, climaxed by a meal at Robins AFB. Also the cadets plan and manage one social func- tion each quarter, such as the Mili- tary Ball, Dining In, Field Day Pic- nic, and Spring Military Review. The ROTC sponsors an Award winning DRILL TEAM and Rock- etry Club. All cadets earn Award Ribbons for Outstanding effort, while many of the Outstanding Cadets are also presented Medal Awards by numerous civic organi- zations. The AFJROTC Parents' Club sponsors many of the Cocur- ricular Activities both with financial and moral support. All in all. AFJROTC at Perry is the best! We were then aware of all the things that went on around school, and we were in on the rituals of being an upperclassman. The juniors, class of ’82, won a lot of recognition away from the Seniors such as the winning of the tug of war and the winning of chain link sales at Homecoming. Class rings were another asset of being a Junior. As Sophomores, we piled into the lunchroom to order our class rings, and when we got them it associated us with being an upperclassman. The biggest satisfaction of be- ing a junior was the time when the Jr-Sr Dance rolled around. The juniors spent hours, days, nights and months putting together the elaborate night, which started with magazine sales in September. The reward was paid off the night of the dance when the Senior class appreciated the Juniors for the hard work done in recognition of them. The end of our Junior year was a happy time and a sad time. We were happy to start our last year of high school as Seniors, in the fall. But, we were sad to see our older friends graduate. Students must be respected as individuals with their own individual talents before the various traits can be combined to form teams, committees, clubs and staffs. On the other hand, no one individual can do it all himself. Perry High is composed of a varie- ty of talented students working together. 99 001. Home- coming Is Big Celebra- tion Although the students at Perry High are known for their spirit, the week of Homecoming celebration brought forth more enthusiasm than even the students knew they had. The doors were decorated with messages such as “Indians Bite the Dust,” “Extinguish the Injuns,” and “Get Dodge out of Perry.” The stu- dent body also showed its support by dressing up in various costumes on each special day of Homecoming week. “Disco Day,” “Kiddie Day,” and the traditional “Maroon and Gold Day” on Friday were days which will always bring back a smile to everyone’s face. The celebration was concluded with an exciting football game and dance. Students who had always been clad in jeans and pit- ching sleeves showed up at the dance in suits and dresses. The talent competition began, and the audience was entertained as the girls danced, sang, acted, and performed their way into everyone’s heart. 112 113 RuthAnn Fineis Chosen Miss Panther Formal Wear competition was next, and the effect was dazzling as each contestant appeared in the dress of her choice. After a brief inter- mission, the girls reap- peared for the talent and formal wear awards and the announcement of the five finalists. Carla Detscher was the winner of the talent com- petition. She combined a short piano piece, a broad- way song, and a captivating performance by her show dog into one skit. Ruth Ann Fineis was presented with the “Miss Congeniality” award and the Formal Wear award. These two girls and three others, Sydney Smith, Naomi Solomon, and Lona Bretz were chosen as the five finalists. In front of two sell out crowds and one near miss, the cast of for- ty five Perry High students danced and sang their way into everyone’s heart. The show was under the direction of Mr. Paul Shelton, Mr. Allen Shaw, and Miss Donna Arrington. Songs and dances were per- formed from the Broadway, Country- Western, Soul, and Rock categories. Among the acts there were a few per- formers who were really impressive. Lona Bretz performed throughout the night, and was featured in two solos, “Nine to Five’’ and “Treat Me Right.” Curtis Solomon really stopped the show with his numbers “Jailhouse Rock’’ and “One In A Million.” Another well received performer was Ruby Lane with her songs, “Stop In the Name of Love” and “On the Radio.” Master of Ceremonies, Michael Lyons, was multi- talented; he kept the show rolling with his magic and his solo, “Almost Like A Song.” The audience really enjoyed the YoMen club in the “Gambler” and “All Shook Up.” The Showtime Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Bill Alford, was a great asset to the show, with its accom- paniments and solos. The many acts and songs made stars of students from Perry High and the cast and the audience en- joyed every minute of the show. 117 Jrs.-Srs. Enjoy Prom The theme for the 1981 Jr.-Sr. prom was unanimously chosen to be Fantasy Island. Amidst numerous palm trees, sea shells, waterfalls, and grass huts, the couples danced the night away. Whatever the situation, most students are ready and willing to work together, as long as it takes, to get the job done. Attitude sets this school apart from other schools and the students know it! 135 Support Support is another important aspect of a successful school. Most students are valuable supporters without even knowing it! For example, eating in the lunchroom, and just coming to class are two common ways of supporting. It takes effort to make it to the games and even more to cheer at them. It takes practice to sing in the chorus concerts and to play in the game, but regardless of the extent of each student’s support, the overall effect is what keeps the school going. 136 1st Row: (I to r) Paul O’Connell, David Whiddon, J. The team was young, but its dedication showed through on many occasions. At almost every game, Perry fans filled the stadiums, dressed in school colors waving banners and pom- poms. The football season provided entertainment for the Perry High students, faculty and fans, and the pep rallies provided a place for the students to “let loose” some of their spirit. Football season is a time that almost everyone hates to see end. 141 Coaches: (I to r) James Kinchen — Tight Ends, Kenny Moore — Of- fensive Backs, Dave Boschelli — Defensive Backs, Alan Shaw — Receivers, Dave Crockett — Head Coach, Willie Street — Linemen 144 Seniors: (I to r) David Whiddon, David Arnall Seniors: (I to r) Kelvin Ross, Alvin Durham, Donald Green, Marty Caffey, Anthony Rawls, Kim Lester, Roy Fruehauf, Wayne Henry. 145 Cheerleaders Raise Spirit Front Row: (I to r) Shelly Tucker, Julie Maner, Heidi Fruehauf, Sandy Whiddon; Second Row: (I to r) Donna Jones, Tammy Solomon, sponsors Ms. Defore and Ms. Myrell, Yetoria Lumpkin, Michelle Harris; Third Row: (I to r) Jennifer Clayton, Cindy Lewis; Deanna Caldwell; 146 Shell jcker Deanna Caldwell Donna Jones Regardless of how much spirit the Perry High students seemed to have, one cannot imagine a game or pep rally without the cheerleaders. When the game looked bad, the cheerleaders were still smiling. They sent chants of support and con- fidence to the players whenever they needed it. The cheerleaders even carried out their duties off the field or out of the gym by cheering up the players after a particularly discouraging game. And on the days when Perry was victorious — WATCH OUT! They cheered right out of the stadium and even on the bus home. Cheerleading is a full-time ac- tivity, and the Perry High girls carried the responsibility proudly. The softball team loaded on the bus after school amost every afternoon and head- ed toward a hard practice. Coach Evans, a student teacher from Fort Valley State College, assisted Miss Myrell in coaching the team. The first game was not any longer than two weeks after tryouts, so it took many long hours to get ready. All of the home games were played in Warner Robins. In Memory of Tyler Eric Golder No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main ... Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.. John Donne In a sense, we are the losers, for Tyler Golder was a unique young man. He was interested and con- cerned for those around him. He had a quick, ready smile and a “Hey” for his friends. Those who knew him will miss him. Tyler was a member of several clubs and organizations, and he worked hard to make each activity a success. Those organizations will miss him. Tyler wasa person of deep con- victions. He was learning more about his faith and beliefs every day and was striving to live his beliefs. His church will miss him, but those who will continue to miss him the most are his family. They will miss living and sharing the every day occurrences we take for granted and frequently ignore. In another sense, however, we were the recipients of a great deal for we knew Tyler. We will remem- ber all the good times and fun we shared together. He will not be for- gotten. John Donne wrote, “Any man’s death diminishes me ... ” We the students and faculty of Perry High and the members of the Perry community, no matter what age, are diminished by Tyler’s death. We all will miss him greatly. 210 In Memory of Kelly Lynn Ratterree ONE OF GOD’S BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS In the Book of Solomon, Chapter 6, verse 2, we find these words: “My Beloved is gone down into His Garden ... to gather Lillies.” The “Beloved,” the Gardener, is Christ and “His Garden” is the World. In this Garden He is cultivating Flowers with which to adorn His Home in Heaven. The Flowers are in- dividual Christians. The death of one of God’s Redeemed here on earth is simply God’s plucking a Flower from His Garden for the Great Bouquet in Heaven. This is His method of gathering His Flowers. KELLY LYNN RATTERREE — one of God’s beautiful Flowers — was loaned to us by a loving Father, for only fifteen short years. But she lived more and touched more people’s lives in those fifteen years than most people do in their whole lifetime — whether they live to be fifty, seventy-five, or even a hundred years old. — Rev. Hal C. Keller 21111 212 Good ... 213 Sharing 214 ■■■ Special Moments.. The entire high school experi- ence is made up of moments, and the majority of them are spe- cial. This is a time during which all are growing mentally and growing together makes it easier. Sometimes the moment is spe- cial because everyone has passed a hard test; while other times it could be the result of pre- paring for the prom or a team doing well in a game. Then again, some of the more unpleasant moments can be made special by a friendly smile or a reassuring pat on the back. Whatever the occasion, it is only made a spe- cial moment by friends. 215 216 New Decisions ... The decisions a student makes in high school are often ones that will affect the rest of his life. It is nice to know that there are always counselors, teachers, and other students ready to help. From deciding on what classes to take, to choosing a college, Perry High students have shown they know how to make new decisions with confidence. -.i •■ .♦ rz 217 Growing 218 Older Together... 219 High School is ... 221 Looking 222 L is for the laughs we always hear while in the hall. 0 is for the open hearts of all — the short and tall. 0 is for the optimistic at- titude it takes to win. K is for the pride of Kings we know will never end. 1 is for the initials, PHS, we are honored to wear. N is for the nights we sup- port our teams — we’re always there. G is for the giant leap we’ve taken for the better. G is for the grin the boys have when they get that letter. O is for our objective — to express the best of our school. O is for the outings during lunch — okay, so it is against the rules. D is for the determination of a school that knows it is best. ! and this is just the add- ed touch to show we’re above the rest. 223 Much time, effort, and hard work has been put into this annual by many people. I would like to thank the members and advisors of the Perryscope staff for all the hours spent on the annual, the Houston Home Journal for its supply of pic- tures, and Ken Thomas for his help with the photography. The staff and I hope this annual brings many memories and provides a chance to remember the days when, we were looking good. Shawn Broderick Editor In Chief 224
