PERRY HIGH SCHOOL Within the last year, Perry Schools have made marked advances in the improvement of its general program. Steps toward con- struction of a new Junior High School have been of maior impor- tance. In May of 1953, the voters voted 5133,000.00 bond issue for the purpose of building and equiping a Junior High School. This is to be added to approximately 598,000.00 building fund that will be accumulated with the possibility of the necessity of a part of an additional building levy to complete the construction and equiping the building. The recommendation of the architects to close the south half of the block west of the high school building was adopted by the Board of Education. The architects contended that this was necessary, both as a safety measure and to make a more function- al building by using some of the street for the new building. The closin of the street was not acceptable to the mayor and city councii. It then became necessary to buy an additional fifty foot lot bordering the school property on the west for which 512,769.70 was paid to Nell Stone for house and lot. The new Junior High School is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 1955. During the last twelve months, considerable territory has been added to the Perry District. On June 30, 1953, Oak Hill School, southeast of Perry, was made a part of the Perry District and in May of this year, the citizens of Highland district, northeast of Perry, voted to become a part of the Perry District. This not only added approximately twenty square miles to the district, but over S400,000.00 to its evaluation. Perry Schools were a little more definitely organized this year in that Mr. Byard Anderson was officially made principal of the Junior High School and Mr. Carl Ruble was made vice-principal of the qrade school in charae of curriculum. BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBERS Ueft ro right, Mr. William A. Box, Clerk, Mr. Leonard Rugh, President, Mr. John A. Samuelson, Vice-President, lstanding in backl Mr. Jimmie Cain, Dr. Delmar C. Hoot. Flash! Just after the Annual : , went to Press, Superintendent A Spraberry resigned as Superin- : . tendent of School after 'I7 ' years of service to Perry. He -, has accepted a similar posi- . tion at Prague, Oklahoma, in .-' order to be near his pecan GEORGE SP RABERRY Superintendent f-E: T , Administration an ,Qi 1 .all Through death and election, there has been some change in what has been a very stable and long tenured Board of Education. Dr. Delmar C. Hoot was elected to the Board of Education in the spring of 1953 replacing Dr. C. H. Cooke who had been on the Board for sixteen years, most of the time as presi- dent. Mr. W. B. Ringler, vice-president, who was on the Board for fourteen years, died in September of 1953 and Mr. Jimmie Cain was appointed to fill the vacancy. The Board of Education as now constituted is: Mr. Leonard Rugh, president, Mr. John Samuel- son, vicepresident, Mr. William Box, clerk, and Dr. Delmar Hoot and Mr. Jimmie Cain, members. During the past seventeen years, the tenure of the members of the Board of Education has averaged close to fourteen years. A short summary of the progress of this period is perhaps in order. The size of the Perry School district has increased from approximately eight square miles to one hundred twenty two square miles with an additional eighty six square miles in transportation area which makes a total of two hundred eight square miles. The valuation has inaeased from approxi- mately S1,200,000.00 to approximately S4,700,000.00 due to thirteen rural schools being added to the district. A twelve bus transportation system that has gained state recognition has been put in operation to serve the above area. Even the depression years did not limit the progress in the Perry Schools, but every advantage was taken of government financial help KWPAQ to construct the following build- ings: the manual arts building in 1937, band building in 1939, grade building in 1941-42, school bus garage in 1941-42. The agricul- ture building in 1946 and the new addition to the grade building in 1950 were the only buildings that we built without government help. The new Junior High School should be completed in the fall of 1955. Our separate schools were built as follows: six new class rooms in 1937-38, gymnasium and audi- torium in 1938-39, the shop building in 1940- 41, and a home economics addition in 1951. The colored schools have been brought from no accreditation by the State Depart- ment to a member of the North Central Asso- ciation. The modernizing of the curriculum taught by a well trained and stable faculty has been the heart of our progress and the increase in valuation has made it possible for a real future for the Perry Schools. The past seventeen years has been a marked example of a community that decided to move forward its educational program by fine teamwork of its Board of Education, faculty, administration, and the general citizenship of the entire community.
