The popular coach and athletic director was honored during halftime ceremonies oi the annual homecoming game with the Guthrie llueieys. A Y' V a Stadium Dedical' d To 'Hump' Perry stadium finally had an official name Saturday, It's Dan- iels Field, named for one of the city's best-loved citizens. The stadium was dedicated Friday night during the Per- ry-Guthrle football game to Harold Hump Danlels, foot- ball coach and athletic direc- tor from 1932 to 1950 at PHS, and molder of many a great gridiron power. Daniels wa s called onto the field durlng the presentation of members of his 1943 team, and handed an offlcial city resolution in which the stadium was named for him. Daniels, deeply touched by the -honor, Saturday asked The Jour- nal to express his most sincere appreciation to the mayor, c lty councilmen, alumni and fans. Words just cannot say what is ln my heart, the veteran coach said. I just want to thank every- 'me for this great honor. Daniels Field ,gf 4 . .,f-.,- .,,' 5 In the official resolution, the council said that Danlels, as football coach and athletic dl- rector at Perry high school, has exemplified the highest ideals of courage, sports- manship and falth In Ameri- can youth: and, by virtue of his keen coaching ablllty, sln- cerity of purpose, devotion to duty, community loyalty a n d understandlng of boys. has en- deared himself for all time ln the hearts and mlnds of those who served under his guid- ance, and of those who have witnessed the fruits of his in- fluence. Jack Newton, member of the class of 1943, handed the resolu- tion to Daniels while a copy was read over the public address sys- tem by Jimmy Cain. The ceremo- ny followed crowning of Sally Jo Smith as football queen. Warren Nichols, who succeeded Daniels as coach. was presented a pen and pencil set by the '43 grads. Members of the 1943 team assem- bled on the field included Lee Roy Doyle, Jon Cumby Jones, Sld Ber- ry, Newton, Wesley Barker, Jack Dolezal, John St,Clalr, D a y le Lynch, Robert Doyle, Jack Moss- man, Grant Harris and John Skin- ner. ffl'- 1 1 ,-Q. .
