Girls Learn Home EC Skills Knowledge of cooking and sewing are important skills every girls should learn. The home economics depart- ment of Perry Central saw to it this year that these skills among others were learned by its girls. ln the seventh grade, girls were re- quired to take one semester of home ec. The course contains units on foods and nutrition, safety and sanitation, management practices, child care, and careers. Eighth graders were also required to take home ec for one semester. Units included in this course were clothing and textiles, consumer education, the house and its care, and careers. In the ninth grade, vocational home economics was offered. This was a wvo credit course required of all stu- dents minoring or majoring in home economics at the high school. Pupils studied foods, nutrition, kitchen plan- ning, selection, care and use of kitchen equipment. Upper right: Mrs. Brewer, the de- partment head, keeps the teach- ers and her students informed on new phases in home economics. She teaches eighth and ninth grade sewing. Wood, Metal and Drafting Taught to Boys Through Industrial Arts As times change in this modern world, technology is a dominant element in our culture and is increasingly important part of general education. Seventh grade boys were required to take one semester of shop, studying industry, basic drawing and planning, and basic woodworking. The eighth grader also took one semester of shop. They learned the basics of electricity and how to work with metals. Ninth grade industrial arts students studied drafting, job study, machine shop prac- tice, general metals, machine woodworking, and power mechanics. Everyone Keeps in Shape Above: Calisthenics were a major part of physical education for girls as well as boys. Below left: Volleyball not only required physical strength and quick reflexes, but good sportsman- ship as well. Below: Requiring much physical strength and lightning sharp reflexes, wrestling was enjoyed by all boys classes. Guidance on Problems 0 H l Guidance was a required subject of every ninth grade student. The class met every other day for two semesters. During this time, problems that confront most teen- agers were discussed and film strips viewed. The aim of the class was to help the students understand and accept ado- lescence. Heated discussions arose in guidance classes.
