Pupils Study World Impressions The students at Perry Central readied themselves for future re- sponsibilities as citizens through courses in the social studies de- ' ' partment. ss, mf The social studies program was constructed so that each student had an equal opportunity in relation to his or her capacity. So- cial studies was required of all students in the seventh and eighth grade and was offered as an elective for all ninth grade students. Current events are a major part of the social studies program. Students gained a clear understanding of important news events when they studied events as they occurred. At least one day each week was spent on current events items using a current event paper to direct the study. Pupils of this seventh grade block class realized that many important facts constitute the history of the world. Mr. Morris, the social studies depart- ment head, kept a close check on his department, assuring history students of the best his department could provide. He also taught several history classes. W joe Moore, a freshman history stu- ka? ' dent, showed his interest in world affairs by reading 'lWorld Week. I2

Right: Mr. O'Neill, head of the English department, taught several English classes and oversaw the teachers of his depart- ment. He was also much involved in the reading and study skills program. The program this year required all students to take one semester of literature and one semester of grammar.
