Left: Mrs. Moyer, head teacher of the for- eign language department, kept the teachers of that department and her stu- dents well informed as to the changes in the field of foreign language. Right: Mr. O'Neill, head of the English department, taught several English classes and oversaw the teachers of his depart- ment. He was also much involved in the reading and study skills program. Below: This seventh grade English class learned the fundamentals of our English language, They will use these fundamen- tals each day of their lives. Right below: The ninth grade students solved many of their reading and studying problems with suggestions gained from the reading and study skills program. Far below: Mr. O'Neill joined in the fun. use - kzfa' P The Language Arts Department this year strived harder than ever to enliven the study of our native tongue for better communication and understand- ing. The program this year required all students to take one semester of literature and one semester of grammar. All seventh and ninth grade students participated in the developmental reading laboratory program. The work was designed to increase comprehension and reading rate of the written word. Il

Language Study Improves Our ommunication Bonjour, Buenos Dias, Guten Tag, and alpha, beta, gamma are a few words one might hear while walking by the language lab. Stu- dents find the laboratory very helpful in learning a foreign ln- guage. This year for the first time Perry Central conducted an introductory course offered to all pupils in the eighth grade. This was a study of a foreign language with snress on the culture and customs of the Country. Ninth grade students were offered as in the past, French, German, Latin, and Spanish. , .Hu , . 1, ,-'J Above: The students of this eighth grade German class were taught many basic aspects of this language. Below: Two freshmen Spanish students, Debbie Becker and Diane Jarvis, showed that studying about the coun- try and its traditions was important as studying the language itself. Pupils Study World Impressions The students at Perry Central readied themselves for future re- sponsibilities as citizens through courses in the social studies de- ' ' partment. ss, mf The social studies program was constructed so that each student had an equal opportunity in relation to his or her capacity. So- cial studies was required of all students in the seventh and eighth grade and was offered as an elective for all ninth grade students. Current events are a major part of the social studies program. Students gained a clear understanding of important news events when they studied events as they occurred. At least one day each week was spent on current events items using a current event paper to direct the study. Pupils of this seventh grade block class realized that many important facts constitute the history of the world. Mr. Morris, the social studies depart- ment head, kept a close check on his department, assuring history students of the best his department could provide. He also taught several history classes. W joe Moore, a freshman history stu- ka? ' dent, showed his interest in world affairs by reading 'lWorld Week. I2
