Math and Science Help Us Explore ur World Parents still find 'modern math' very confusing and difficult, but teachers at Perry Central find pupils growing more and more accustomed to it every year. Perry Central has had this program for three years. There were classes for the slow learner, the average student, and students who qualified for the enriched program. Mathematics is a necessary part of general educa- tion and a required course in all three grades. Stu- dents in the ninth grade had a choice between al- gebra and general math. One of the most challenging fields of today is sci- ence, and we find at Perry Central our department growing steadily to keep up with this field. This year both seventh and eighth grade students were required to take a general science course. The seventh graders were taught the basic facts of human physiology and the anatomy of the body system. In the eighth grade, students were taught many varied concepts and theories concerning the physical properties, matter, energy, and geology. Special science courses were offered in the seventh and eighth grade to students who qualified. Ninth grade students could have taken biology or earth science. Both courses fulfill the requirements of one year of science for high school graduation. The mathematics department head, Mr, Cole, busily supervised the teachers of his department as to the most effective meth- ! x 2 in 'I ' ods of teaching mathematics. 4 'ET if llff A ics students continually increased their 'J 6 , X This class of freshman general mathernat- x tl II ji If 1 T f l viii .aff knowledge of mathematics through a me- dium of the most modern methods of mathematics. Stu- dents find the laboratory very helpful in learning a foreign ln- guage. This year for the first time Perry Central conducted an introductory course offered to all pupils in the eighth grade. This was a study of a foreign language with snress on the culture and customs of the Country. Ninth grade students were offered as in the past, French, German, Latin, and Spanish. , .Hu , . 1, ,-'J Above: The students of this eighth grade German class were taught many basic aspects of this language. The program this year required all students to take one semester of literature and one semester of grammar. All seventh and ninth grade students participated in the developmental reading laboratory program. The work was designed to increase comprehension and reading rate of the written word. Pupils Study World Impressions The students at Perry Central readied themselves for future re- sponsibilities as citizens through courses in the social studies de- ' ' partment. ss, mf The social studies program was constructed so that each student had an equal opportunity in relation to his or her capacity. So- cial studies was required of all students in the seventh and eighth grade and was offered as an elective for all ninth grade students. Current events are a major part of the social studies program. Students gained a clear understanding of important news events when they studied events as they occurred. At least one day each week was spent on current events items using a current event paper to direct the study. Pupils of this seventh grade block class realized that many important facts constitute the history of the world. Mr. Morris, the social studies depart- ment head, kept a close check on his department, assuring history students of the best his department could provide. He also taught several history classes. W joe Moore, a freshman history stu- ka? ' dent, showed his interest in world affairs by reading 'lWorld Week. I3 Wood, Metal and Drafting Taught to Boys Through Industrial Arts As times change in this modern world, technology is a dominant element in our culture and is increasingly important part of general education. Seventh grade boys were required to take one semester of shop, studying industry, basic drawing and planning, and basic woodworking. The eighth grader also took one semester of shop. They learned the basics of electricity and how to work with metals. Ninth grade industrial arts students studied drafting, job study, machine shop prac- tice, general metals, machine woodworking, and power mechanics. Left: Bobby Hague and Scott Schmal- feldt learned to spot weld during their industrial arts class. Below left: Rick Collins, an eighth grade student, learned to use tin snips safely. I4 Girls Learn Home EC Skills Knowledge of cooking and sewing are important skills every girls should learn. The home economics depart- ment of Perry Central saw to it this year that these skills among others were learned by its girls. ln the seventh grade, girls were re- quired to take one semester of home ec. The course contains units on foods and nutrition, safety and sanitation, management practices, child care, and careers. Eighth graders were also required to take home ec for one semester. Units included in this course were clothing and textiles, consumer education, the house and its care, and careers. In the ninth grade, vocational home economics was offered. This was a wvo credit course required of all stu- dents minoring or majoring in home economics at the high school. Pupils studied foods, nutrition, kitchen plan- ning, selection, care and use of kitchen equipment. Guidance on Problems 0 H l Guidance was a required subject of every ninth grade student. The class met every other day for two semesters. During this time, problems that confront most teen- agers were discussed and film strips viewed. The aim of the class was to help the students understand and accept ado- lescence. Heated discussions arose in guidance classes. Perry Central students received a change of pace from their scholastic studies in the physi- cal education classes. This year the program was greatly varied. The girls participated in soccer, volleyball, a study of different dances, tumbling, apparatus, track, bowling, tennis, and golf. The boys furthered their skill in wrestling, volleyball, touch football, basketball, golf, tumbling, track and tennis. Girls and boys combine their classes for a lesson in square dance. Physical education department heads, Mr. Springer and Miss Baird, tried to vary the phys. ed. program and make it more in- teresting. I7 Girls square dance in physical ed. I I s Art Creates Beauty in ur World Steve Tibbs works with clay. The art department head, Mr. Mc- Donough, taught several art classes and also oversaw the teachers of his de- partment. A general art background was developed by giving seventh and eighth grade students varied art activi- ties. An appreciation of art and its place in every- day life was encouraged. Emphasis was placed on providing opportunity for the student to gain con- fidence in his creative abilities, which can apply to any field. Art I and II was offered to the fresh- men again this year.
