P P S On registration day early in September, the students come to Central to pay school fees and receive their schedules. For many, this is a joyous occasion be- cause many old friendships are renewed. tE.-,,, Can't I ever get away from you? Each spring the incoming seventh graders visit Perry Central to become acquainted with the facilities and policies. The administrators and department heads talk to the students. Members of the Student Council lead them on conducted tours. This is followed by refreshments prepared by the home economics classes. Students have the opportunityto tour the building, find their rooms, and locate lockers. Make mine an easy combination. Perry Central Elects Ofllccrs STUDENT COUNCIL: Bill Roberts, Secretary, Mollie Phillips, Treasurer, Sara Harrell, President, Don Marquette, Vice-president. NINTH GRADE: Marcia Gunnion, Secretary, John Ryker, Treasurer, Mike Daffin, Vice-president, Eric Ellison, President. EIGHTH GRADE: Bruce Weingardt, Secretary-treasurer, Kathy Evans, Vice-president, Doug Woessner, President. Election of Student Council President and Vice-president are held each spring. They are elected following campaign speeches to the smdent body. The class officers are chosen from candidates nominated by each homeroom. Their main duty is to plan the class party. SEVENTH GRADE: Bob Whiffing, Secretary- treasurerg Sandy Lester, President, Denise Marquette, Vice-president. 5 1 PROJECTIONISTS TRAFFIC PATROL The projectionists are responsible for showing movies The Traffic Patrol's main purpose is to promote safety to classes from the Audio-Visual center. I3 Shhh !- Study time. Mike and Angie Chosen King and Queen FWSQF gs -,, r fi I , c'g King Mike Daffin and Queen Angie Leach. Lisa Lovelace and Mark Tabeling bear the crowns. Kamival Kapers night was a lucky night for Mike Daffin and Angie Leach. Mike and Angie were chosen from twelve candidates to be King and Queen of Karnival Kapers. The evening was enjoyable because of the many booths which provided entertainment for all. These booths were planned, decorated, and operated by members of school clubs. The event is sponsored by the PILLAR and PERRYODICAL staffs. HA Pennant for the Kremlin The cast This year's ninth grade play, A Pennant for the Kremlin , was a comedy about baseball. An eccen- tric millionaire leaves the Chicago White Sox to the QQ The fans in the stands. Russians. A Russian Commissioner comes to manage the club and wins the pennant, but loses the World Series. There is an endless conflict between the Russian Ambassador, finally ending in humiliation of the Russian government and happiness for the Russian Commissioner. Jeff Betsch, Student Directorg Greg Skomp, Student Coordinatorg and Don Maxey, Stage Manager helped throughout tryouts, practice, and the performance. Director was Mr. O'Neill. Eighth and ninth grade students have six weeks of reading 2 laboratory, a course designed to increase comprehension and reading rate. fugx -. X hifi.. 1 is The reading lab increases the students' reading ability. Listening intently is important. The foreign languages offered to Perry Central students are: Latin, German, French, and Spanish. The language lab is a great asset in teaching and learning these languages. Speaking and translating via the ear- phones. Science and Mathematics L, The primary objective of the science department is to offer students a wide variety of sciences. Health is required in the seventh grade. Eight grade students take a course in general science. Ninth graders may choose between biology and earth science. Special science courses are offered in the seventh and eighth grades to students who qualify. Ronnie Lakey, hard at work. In jtmior high, pupils are taught to develop an under- standing of what mathematics is and to develop an appreciation of the role of math in the world today. Perry Central's mathematics department offers classes for the slow learner, the average student, and students n :cn em- that qualify for the enriched program. ' ',.,..-ma-.. I CU EEE- I3 CITE!- , .-...Q-.. oczncrm. I9 Social Studies and Business Social studies is required of all students in the seventh and eighth grades. Ninth graders, may elect to take geography. Current events are a major part of the social studies program. At least one day each week is spent studying important news events as they occur. Practice Practice Practice 2.6. Seventh graders ponder history. The business department of Perry Central offers two courses to ninth grade students. They are typewriting and general business. Typing is of special value, because it fits into the work of many other areas. General business is required of all who plan to major in business. 'X f Physical Education . ,. Fresh air makes us kick better. 1 -2-3-4, exercise boys. Our aim in physical education is to develop physical and social growth. Physical education in the ninth grade is alternated with guiclanceg in the eighth grade with scienceg and in the seventh with health. Instru- mentally there is A-band, for eighth and ninth gradersg B-band for seventh gradersg I and orchestra, for all who play string , instruments. The girls' chorus practices. Mr. Rumsey directs the mixed chorus. Our band takes first place in marching contest. 22 students and vocal and instrumental groups. Art Department Lynn Danner does a paper sculpture. Seventh grade special art student makes a wire sculpture. Howard Jackson paints with water colors. i A general art background is developed in eighth grade art classes. All students take one semester of this class. The fundamentals learned here will serve the student in future leisure activities. The organization called the PILLAR is responsible for the school yearbook. The staff consists of twenty-one students and is directed by Miss Whitten. The staff strives harder each year in order to produce bigger and better yearbook. This year THE PILLAR has a hard back cover for the time. The Perryodical staff is the group which produces and publishes the school newspaper. They met each day during a study hall period. Instruction and practice in journalism was available to those who are interested in these areas. This staff is a service to the school. Debbie Ruoff aids in the production of the paper. Student Council The Student Council of Perry Central is the school's way of student government sponsored by Mr. Callon. Election of the president and vice-presi- dent are conducted with spirited campaigns each spring. Other members, elected by homeroorns, bring complaints and suggestions to the council. Social Studies Club The purpose of the Social Studies Club is to broaden the field of interest of social studies students and to further their academic achievement. The students have had an opportunity to exhibit leadership and conduct independent research. The club visited the State Legislature to observe governmental practices first hand. President, Jackie Peters, Vice-president, Debbie Ruoffg Secretary, Cindy Henry, Treasurer, Lynette Ryker. Sponsor, Mr. Beechler. Pep Club Pep Club is the largest school organization to which students of all grades may belong. The purpose of the club is to support our teams to victory. The members of the Pep Club are required to attend at least three games during the season. Many of the members this year have purchased Panther booster pins. The cheerleaders along with Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Beechler plan the pep sessions. G.A.A. The Girls' Athletic Association is open to any girl at Perry Central who likes physical education. The club tries to promote good sportsmanship and provide good recreational activities. They take part in such activities as bowling, volley- ball, basketball, and track events. The programs for the Language Arts Club were based on various language arts interest areas: speech, TV and radio, journalism, and drama. Home Economics Club t Latin Club The goal of the Home Economics Club is to help individuals improve personal, family, and com- munity living. Highlights of activities were a hair stylist demonstration, a talk by an exchange student, and a field trip to L. S. Ayres and J. C. Penney Stores. The Latin Club is made up of ninth grade students and is sponsored by Mrs. Thompson. During the club meetings they investigate the ancient Roman life through film strips and discussions. Rund The Nurses Club is made up of eighth and ninth graders who would like to pursue a career in medicine. To help pursue their knowledge, the club, accompanied by their sponsor, Mrs. Rund, took a field trip to Methodist Hospital. Math Club The members of the Math Club are students wishing to further their math abilities or to perhaps make math part of their career. The members learn more about math beyond what is taught in the classes. The three basic study interests were the slide rule, coding, and elementary logic. Science Club The Science Club meets with Mr. Carson to discuss experiments and scientific topics. Each club member reports on experiments he has done. Sponsor, Mr. Stenger. Hi-Y Lettcrmalfs Club Hi-Y is an organization for ninth grade boys. For Membership in the Lettermen's Club is limited to the promotion of good will, the boys help needy families athletes who have been awarded a C at Perry Central. at Christmas by collecting canned goods and The club worked to further the athletic program distributing them to families. under the leadership of Mr. Strader. During the year the lettermen operate the concession stand at the athletic events. Business Club The Business Club furthers the knowledge in business and teaches good citizenship. This year our ninth grade football team had a little trouble getting in the winning spirit, but did manage to beat our rival Perry East. This year being the fifth straight win over East. The team worked hard but could manage to get victory in their grasp only three times while losing five. The team was coached by Mr. Strader and Mr. Peterson. Moore and Mr. D. Moore. They lost the first two games, but came back to win the last five in a row. The opponents were held scoreless in three of the last five games. Top scorer for the season was Doug Woessner. I-Ie is not only the leader of Perry Central, but he is also one of its participators. He strives to be an example. He also strives to set forth an academic program that will strengthen the advanced student as well as aid the slow worker. xv, S5- J-ae' Perry Central Standards r ' x js- - Mr. Roark DEAN OF GIRLS Mrs. Peterson, Perry Central's dean of girls has this year enjoyed working in a newly remodeled office. Her duties with the girls are writing absence excuses and late slips, counseling with the girls, and trying to answer the endless questions that come her way each day. In addition to this she also plans the weekly school convocations and teaches a ninth grade language arts class. VICE PRINCIPAL DEAN OF BOYS Mr. Roark is both vice principal and dean of boys. In this capacity, he is in charge of the discipline of the boys in the school. He assists Mr. Callon with the administrative duties. With all his other duties, Mr. Roark plans the club meeting schedules and selects the hall monitors. Mrs. Peterson 95 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS ii, Mr. Metheny, Mr. Bertram, Mr. Banks The three guidance counselors, Mr. Bertram, Mr. Banks, and Mr. Metheny, carry on many activities throughout the year. Some of these are conferences with parents, administration of standardized tests, and helping students with academic problems. Mr. Bertram is the head of the guidance department and is ninth grade counselor. Planning pupils' schedules is his main job. SCHOOL SECRETARY Mrs. Dickey, the school secretary, is in charge of the General Office. She is assisted in her work by the office girls which she trains. N 96 Mr. Metheny, the eighth grade counselor, prepares the students in the eighth grade for high school. H also teaches a history class. Mr. Banks is the seventh grade counselor and helps the seventh graders become adjusted to their new school life. He is also a history teacher. Mrs. Dickey HELPERS TO ALL CENTRALITES Mrs. Ketcham, Speech Therapist Mrs. Clements, Bookkeeperg Mrs. Boger, Secretary The service given by these five ladies is valuable to each pupil of Perry Central. Our speech therapist, Mrs. Ketcham, spends one day each week giving individual attention to students. The school nurse, Mrs. Rund, has charge of the first aid room. She is also the sponsor of the nurses club. 97 Mrs. Rund, School Nurse Mrs. Davidson, Library Clerk lvirs. Clements and Mrs. Boger are the bookkeepers for the school. Mrs. Boger also helps in operating the bookstore. Mrs. Davidson, the library clerk, offers help to Mrs. Hammer in the maintenance of an up-to-date card catalogue. She also helps to order and process new books.
