The Freshman Pla Brings Alive The cast of the ninth grade play portrayed the characters in just a Dawn Away. JUST A DAWN AWAY, the ninth grade play for 1969, was a departure from previous years. An original script by Mrs. Dial and Mr. O'Neill, it told the story of two college students, valedictorians of their high school classes, who discovered the need to be more sensitive to other people and more willing to gather necessary information before making important decisions. The three-act play, set at Indiana State University, examined many con- flicts basic to today: the city and the rural communityg prejudice and understandingg sorority-fraternity students and independent studentsg and boy and girl communications. Mr. O'Neill and Mrs. Dial began writing the play before school was out in june 1968, the play was re-written to meet the talents of the ninth grade class of 1968-69. Innovations for a Perry Central production in- cluded the use of color slides projected on a screen at the back of the stage and prerecorded tape sections to tell transitional parts of the story. The play was performed in three-quarter-round in six different areas, two which were raised above audience level. This allowed for rapid changes from one scene to another. David Mobley and Dan Hig gens chat. Keith Mockford, student directory Scott Harvey, stage managerg and Gary Marlin student coordinator assisted in the prepara tion of the play from its casting in early September through its final production on H March 7 and 8.
