AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE The American Field Service started in 1914 as an organization to help the French armies with ambulance service. In 1946, the current international scholarship program for secondary schools was created. The basic idea of the American Field Service is to promote world peace and understanding through the youth of our many nations. This past year, there were 2,700 students from over 60 different countries in the United States and 1,900 American students sent to over 40 nations. r,
