Perris, some 70 years ago, was barren and desolaTe. ln I88O Two whiTe seTTlers came To The Valley in search oT gold. When The Caliifornia SouThern Railroad was builT Trom ColTon To San Diego in I882, seTTlers began To doT The plains wiTh Their cabins. This new seTTlemenT was called PinacaTe, Taking The name oT The nearby gold mine. PincaTe needed a general sTcre, posT oTTice and railroad sTaTion, also a soloon. BuT PinacaTe soon meT wiTh Troubles over The TiTle To The land. This led several oT The seTTlers To a poinT Two miles norTh To esTablish a new village. WiTh The help oT some San Bernardino business men and The Rail- road Company, Perris was born. The seTTlemenT was so-called in honor oT Fred T. Perris, chieT engineer Tor The railroad company. l-ler TighT Tor exisTance was noT an easy one. Lilce unTo The cry oT The fXncienT Mariner, her seTTlers have Toiled and prayed Tor waTer. Since her birTh in l885, Perris has grown inTo a Thriving communiTy, serving many smaller villages ThaT surround her. The gold mines, horses and carriages, and old-Time saloons have been replaced by prosperous Tarms and ranches, hundreds oT Truck and Tarm machines, and modern sTores.
