We all started the year with high hopes and great ambitions. Many achieved these ambitions on the playing field or in the classroom. Those who feel as if they didn't fulfill their ambitions should not be discouraged, for everyone achieved at least one thing. The freshmen achieved the distinction of being in high school. No longer were they little children going to grammar school, they were young adults attending high school. They have three years left in which to set their lifetime goals. The sophomores were trusted with many respon- sibilities. Some received their driver's licenses during the year. Some realized that now was the time to start think- ing seriously about their future. However, they still have two more years before any irreversible decision must be made. Some of the juniors received their classrings during the year. They now had a valuable keepsake to cherish for the rest of their lives. They planned Prom '79, a great achievement for those who worked to make it a success. Many of them started deciding which college they wished to attend, or what line of work they wished to enter. They have but one year left to make their decisions. The seniors faced the choice of going to college or start- ing out on a lifetime of work. It was an extremely difficult choice, decided on differently by each individual. We all realize one thing, however, our high school days were the happiest time of our lives. So as you look over the following pages, study each one slowly and carefully, for they reflect a year of achievement that is gone, never to retum. - jeff Winslow -..-.. -..--- ----------------- fg, N . .. They discussed plans with consultants and decided on the plans for new classrooms and renovation of the gym to provide new locker rooms. E The plans call for a new building between the gym and main building which will eventually house the ad- ministrative offices. Three new classrooms will be added to the library while the original three will be modified to enlarge the library itself. Another classroom building will be built beside the library and gym. Preliminary construction began a few days before Christmas vacation. The new buildings are scheduled for completion by Christmas '79, The new additions should prove useful in years to come, providing space for new and diverse programs. r --.. SENIGRS ----- -- ----- -- Cathy Allen Senior year - a milestone in our lives. A milestone that was reached through hard work and careful planning. Each of us is standing at a cross- roads in our lives. Two roads are open to usp one that leads to work and another that leads to college and then to work. Because there are two paths to follow, the road through the se- nior section is divided. The upper road leads to college, while the lower road leads straight to work. However, we do not intend to imply that if you take the high road and I take the low road that I'll be where I'm going first. We'll all reach our goals in due time. CFor more details of the big night itself, see pages 76-80.1 Through the hard work of the class, the evening was a huge success. Of course, there was much behind-the-scenes preparation. During the week prior to prom night, the gymnasium was filled with the sounds of hammers on wood land occasionally on fingersll, of scis- sors cutting through miles of stream- ers, and of the various other noises that accompanied the transformation of the gym to a Parisian street scene. How- ever, no one minded the hard work after they saw the transformation com- pleted. We'd like to thank those who worked diligently throughout the week. To avoid possible embarrassment, we will not list those who worked the hardest, or those who goofed off most of the time. Besides, they know who they are! Out in the world, there's nothing the same, So don't drop out, or you'll be the blame. Getting an education isn't hard to do. Your parents will always be proud of you. But no matter how hard the task may seem, I won't give up my plans or my dreams, No broken bridges can tum me around, Because what l'm searching for will soon will be found. Along the path, sand and rocks we added And all our trampling feet kept it fully padded. Then gradually this path became a road Bearing each and every person's load. Then gradually these loads were uplifted for each of us Causing less confusion, much less fuss. But somehow several things got in most of our ways Which slowed and disrupted most of our days. , Encouragement and understanding we received from all Which kept us going after each fall. We extend our congratulations to the 1978 varsity foot- ball team for being in the drawings for the 2A conference playoffs. They played hard all season and were defeated only twice during the conference games. The football teams of the past two years have given PCHS a new name in the conference. At the end of the regular season, PCHS was tied with Currituck, Gates, and Murfreesboro for first place. To determine the order in which they finished, the coaches drew numbers. PCHS did not draw number one so they did not make it to the playoffs. The team did receive a trophy as recognition for tying for first. Keep up the good work, Coach Webster and maybe the '79 season will tum out better. I 112 Football 'iv' fl Q ,sf 3 QQ, fir, . isis. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL V C 114 Jv Football The following were the members ofthe 1978 IV football team: ffront rowj Randy Parks, Eric Tilley, Howard Eaves, Linward Moore: Ksecond rowj Randy Winslow, Eric Cohoon, Thomas Lightfoot, Eddie Pierce: ftop rowl Coach Don lnscoe: Knot picturedj Scott Williams, james Watkins, Ronnie Hite. Eric Cohoon and Eddie Pierce were the IV captains. In August, the annual summer football practice began for the Iunior Varsity Football players. For many, organized football was a new experience. There was also a new coach, Don Inscoe, and of course, it took time for coach and team to get used to each other. The season began with high hopes which were quickly extinguished as the Edenton Aces devastated the Pirates with an aerial attack. The game finally ended with a score of 0 to 28. The next game did not end favorably for the Pirates either. The IV's were completely outmatched by a veteran West Carteret team. Final score: Pirates 0, West Carteret 56. The conference season got underway against the Camden Bruins. In what tumed out to be a hard-fought game, Camden eventually overcame the Pirates with a score of 6 to 20. The next game, against Murfreesboro, proved to be a tum around for the IV's. In their second conference game, the Pirates demonstrated they could succeed with an eight to six victory over the Raiders. The IV's fifth game was a rematch of the first conference game. After this hard-fought contest, Perquimans once again came out on the short end - 6 to 8. The last game of the season was played on Murfreesboro's home field. The IV team had been trimmed to eleven players. Although the eleven gave it all they had, Murfreesboro over-powered the trimmed-clown Pirates by a score of 0 to 28. Along with a tough sched- ule, the team was often plagued by foul trouble. They started the season with three non- conference losses and just could not seem to keep it together. Even when faced with a loss, the team still played hard. The team was victorious in the Christmas toumament but after that victories were few and far between. Despite these losses the team showed some spectacular talent ranging from slam dunks to fast breaks of razzle dazzle. The team finished with a 7-10 non-conference record and a 6-6 conference record. Players in the team picture above are: Bobby Tolson, Paris Whedbee, Ellis Everett, Wayne White, Michael Holley, Levon Skinner, Coach Celvin Webster, Edward White, Fred Rountree, Victor Askew, Milton Modlin, Kenneth Ferebee, and Garry Bryant. s Q. pi E Rx A W I 50. Fouling and not making our foul shots were our two main problem areas. There was a great lack of team work which hurt the team as a whole, but there's still a lot of talent and I expect it to be shown next year. 128 Girls' Basketball The girls' basketball team is made up of the following girls: Valerie Walker, Cathy Wells, Lorraine Tolson, Fearlie White, Sharon Carson, Mary Rumble, Bethsheba Ormond, Valerie Skinner, Brenda Pierce, Mary O'Neal, Helaine jones, Victoria Banks, Vera Brown, Cynthia Wills, Kim Rountree, and Flora Hinton, trainer. ll in '1 f'-si fy , r ,, .gm g,..Q, . Or was it what YOU made it? True, it was not an outstanding year. We didn't get a new school. The old school still leaks when it rains, still has too little heat when it's cold and too much heat when it's hot. The students didn't rebel any more than usual. Most ofthe sports teams had only sovso sea- sons. No, it wasn't an outstanding year. But then, it wasn't a bad year either. I think it was what we made it. No more, no less. To me, it was a good year. To you . . . ? l Only you can write the epilogue to . your year. It was different for every af student out here. This year's GAL- LEON staff tried to show every view- point. Of course, it was impossible. We hope, however, that we showed at least the majority of view-points. - the editor 3 ' ry 52,5 gh ri GT au. f ' I .,. ...ins-4' E 54,91 Q 4 ,r,. Y ...L.,, is in .A 6 .vh J X I6 1 . L , as Pe.
