Now, we are beginning our third century as a nation and the class of 1977 will be the first graduating class of the third century. As a symbol of the three centuries, the senior section is surrounded by three lines. Since this is a year that is big on birthdays, the Seniors have been listed in chronological order, starting, of course, with July. av The Senior Class of 1977 is being led through their last and final hectic year by the class advisors. They are Mrs. Swindell, Miss Pritchard, Mrs. Barber, Mrs. Byrd, and, not pictured, Mrs. Wright. During the first class meeting, the seniors elected their officers. Presi- dent of the class is Phillip Harrell, vice-president is Tony Jordan, secre- tary is Annette Felton, and treasurer is Gwen Whedbee. 12 Class Motto We've come too far to end it now. Per- quimans should have wrapped up the champi- onship but lost a clincher to Gates and put the con- ference in a five-way tie for first place. Behind the lead- ership of new coaches and experienced players, the J.V. foot- ball team won the Conference title last season. The boys finished the season with a 5-2-1 record. The teams that de- feated or tied the Pi- rates were each in turn defeated when they came to Hertford. 96 Touchdowns were scored in every way possible: on intercep- tions, punt returns, kick-off returns, pass and running plays. A lot can be ex- pected next year from the J.V. team's return- ing members. The end of the regular season saw Per- quimans and Camden in a tie for first place. The most exciting and well- played games came during the Conference Tournament. Cur- rituck was the first to buckle under the force of the Pirate girls. A tough Northampton team was next. Finally, the Pirates showed their superiority in a sound victory over Camden, 52-41. The victory won Perquimans the Tournament Championship. Following the Conference Tournament, the Pirates met Northwest in the first round of the District Tournament. Perquimans won by a score of 27-25. The vic- tory advanced them to the semi- finals. Unfortunately the Pirate girls ended a sensational season with a loss to their Eastman foes. The boys won the first conference game, surprising Cur- rituck 67-63. After that, the team couldn't seem to get it all together until the last part of the season when they defeated Camden, Gates, and Murfreesboro in a valiant comeback ef- fort. Fourth place and a berth in the District Tour- nament were forfeited when Perquimans lost the last regular season game to Currituck. Senior Tyronne Spell- man was a standout, lead- ing in scoring and re- bounding. He and Melvin Hunter were named All- Conference players. Carl Zachary received an hon- orable mention. 3 1 'Vg , . Basketball The J.V. basketball team had a good season and played many exciting games. lt seemed at first as if they couldn't be beat, win- ning five consecutive games. After a loss to Northampton, the team's momentum slowed down. The biggest disappointment of the season came when the Pirates lost first place to Currituck in a controversial overtime game. Hopes of taking the Conference Tournament were shattered by a 69-68 loss to Camden in the first round of the play-offs. Despite the frustrating outcome of the season, the J.V.'s finished with a respectable 9-5 record. rr Fa J 1 X. 1 , ,- Qs fx., .,, 115 4 116 v- ,fuk V' .x - X - x 3. -je- . -1 f . yi vwrff' Q. f W N ' x ' W ' -f A W . . , :evwm-wixk.b W. ,if 4. .iw , ' .Jr Fffgf- fixmsx ' tfyt' sf -g .. 30 Track an-u bi 1 1555-f av w is 1 Us 2' fi Q 4 5 'yzixif . After a slow start in out-of- conference meets, the pace of the team speeded up. The Pi- rates became simply unbeat- able. Records were broken by Charlie Sutton in the 100-yard dash, Dennis Smith in the high jump, and Wyatt Jordan in the pole vault. The 880-relay team, Mike Flythe, Gerald Honeyblue, Jerard Harrell, and Charlie Sutton, stayed out in front the whole season, never losing a race. Coach Webster cited Gerald Honeyblue and Charlie Sutton as outstanding players. Winning the confer- ence championship, however, proved to take not only indi- vidual effort, but team effort. Last year, the girls had two sports offered to them: bas- ketball and, for the first time, softball. Those who took advantage of the new sport enjoyed the season and finished second in the con- ference. The first game was played at home against Knapp and the Pirates got beat. Beat bad. As the season progressed, however, the girls played harder and tougher. When they played Knapp a second time, at Knapp, the Pirates won the contest. Coach Byrd said that the mngpypvms ,or-e-nq..m.,g team did extremely well for their first year of effort. At the season's end, Benita Hollowell and Suzy Towe were named as All Conference players. Benita was also awarded a trophy for having the highest batting average and Lynn Hurdle was recognized as an outstanding fielder. The whole team will be returning next year, seasoned and ready to play. We can expect a conference championship from the Pirate ladies in 1977. x..,,.,- .ne Q -4.
