K ?E The Griffin 1 909 PUBLI HED BY TH SENIOR CLASS ll L F PERKIOMEN SEMINARY JUNE I909 PENN BUR PA Q6 BE 50th Volume of The Griffin 1 95 9 Dedication At Perkiolnen there is a man who has more sons than he can count. Literally hundreds of boys are deeply grateful that they have had the wonderful guidance of this man. What he has done can never he expressed in words, for it is an achieve- ment in spirit and love. He has devoted himself to raising men. To you, Smitty. we the class of 1959 dedicate this yearbook. Your warm heart, your penetrating laugh. and your radiant goodness will not he forgotten. Message from the Headmaster The Class of '59 has written an enviable chapter in the long history of Perkiomen School. It is the consensus of the Faculty and Administration that this class has set a standard of achievement and student responsibility beyond that of any senior class of the last eight years. ln developing and accepting responsibilities for the welfare of all, in the extra-curricular and chapel programs, in the proctoring of dormitories, and in many other facets of the school program, these young men have been remarkably competent. They have not been re- luctant to let it be known that they are here to be educated, and they have set an admirable standard for all underclassnien to follow. The influence of the Class of '59 on the campus has been wholesome and beneficial throughout the year: it is an example that will be diflicult for succeeding classes to duplicate. They have learned to discipline themselves for the task ahead, and we are confident that they will establish new records of achievement to add to the long list of noteworthy accomplishments by Perkiomen graduates. As they leave our halls, our good wishes go with each young man into his field of service. No matter what line of endeavor this yearis graduate chooses to follow, we know that he will make the positive contribution so essential to success in this con- stantly changing era of scientific discovery. To the Class of 1959 Dear Class of 1959. l would like to tell you that it has been an honor and a pleasure serving as advisor in your senior year. Yours has been one of the finest classes graduating from this school, and l hope that other classes will follow your example as well as you have established it. I can only say that if you keep up the good work you have so far hegun, nothing can go wrong. The experience of working with you has convinced me not to believe those critics who say American youth is going to the dogs. There are too inany among you who are going to do big things someday! Yours sincerely, S. Y. EDGERTON. 4 FA CULTY AND ADMINISTRATION 'N X ! , X , , ' ,X , A , QJ 'J ! ff - ' , V, I RALPH J. HOSSMAN, A.B Dartmouth College Harvard University Director of Courses T. Other members were: Michael Civler. presi- dent of the Freshman Class: William Cressman. representing Kelis Hall: Aaron Lichtenwalner. Melvyn Estrin and ,lerc Stauffer were elected as senators from A and C floors. while james Steele, president of the Sopho- more Class, represented B floor of Kriebel Hall. Nlichael Bligh and Harrison Pirnik were Senate members in behalf of the day students. The duties of the Student Senate are numer- ous. ln the absence of masters during evening study hall. Senate members are expected to assist in the conducting of study hall. Also, the Senate is the means by which wishes of the student body are conveyed to the Administration for consider- ation. The smoking privileges which prevailed in the dormitory lavatories, the late lights and break- fast cuts for Seniors and the 7:30 weekend check-in originated in the Senate. On January of 1959, the Student Senate became a member of the National Association of Student Councils. It is a desire of the Senate that this mem- bership be renewed yearly. For the first time since the establishment of the Student Senate of Perkiomen School, it has become a committee for the purpose of impressing upon certain students their responsibilities to the school. ln retrospect, the Student Senate feels that the school year F158-1959 has produced significant changes in Perkiomen School, in the student body, and in the organization of the Senate. 5 5 The Griffin Editorial Staff l irsl Rau' lmlvl In leigllff lfvillru lh'r'l.'r'1'l. llr'rflal1vl'. l,iIllfl'!lliIl. 54'l'UlIll Rauf: Ulsun. Varsity Football The 1958 Perkiomen footliall squad. although it fell to a losing season. won several victories worthy ol merit. In their first game. the Indians opened against Hill scoring the first seven points. Later Hill came hack to tie Perkiomen: however the lndians nearly scored again as they were only one yard from the goal wtih the last down coming up as the gun sounded. Against Vlfilliamson Trade Perkiomen's thunderous line and faultless aerial attack racked a total score of 37 to 0. This was the year of the great Frank Waresak who filled the fans with cheer as his mighty strength crashed the opposing lines. Powerful hallhack Cookie Lisella was in- jured early in the season, hut his presence spirited the team and the fans as he went to every practice and every game. Camden, New Jerseyds, All-State Catholic Tony Gaw- ronski made some of the most thrilling tackles ever seen as he crashed through the opposing lines to throw the half- liacks for fifteen or twenty yard losses. It was the year that track man George Fulmer became the star halfhack as he was a constant ground gainer and a streak of lightning when he was in the clear. The spectacular catching of left end Boll Barlow will never he forgotten. All the fans could see were his hands as the All Delco star grahhed fifty yard passes from inside the end zone for touchdowns. Bernie Sennnel was a genius at quarterback as he timed his plays well. 41 First Row Left lo Right: Reese. Freed. Neville. Flaherty. Xliller. ll. P. Flickinger. Recd. llirxin. Striar. Football llespite the fact that the ,l.V. Foothall squad was exceptionally light and had several ol its vital memhers graduate to the varsity. the season was a faxorahle one. This pearls team was dehnitely not as strong as last years hut it fought hard. doing much hetter than the won and lost column indicates. In the Hrst game the team traveled to Valley Forge where it met a rough opponent. The game was very close with Perk losing I3-0 on a fumhle and an intercepted pass. Other than these two mishaps, the game was even all the way. ln the next game Perkiomen vanquished a pol- ished Vlfyoming Seminary team 13-ll in a truly well- played contest in which Perkiomen could do no wrong. and held a determined Wyoming scoreless. The last two games were quite tough hecause of the lightning deception which lmoth opponents employed. Bishop Kenrielc and Hill hoth had more experience than the Indians. and used it when they executed the deadly reverse. Perkiomen fought valiantly. hut was defeated in hoth contests. The team was ohviously hetter than a 1-3 record shows. and hy the end of the season had reached its peak. The ,l.Y. in action. First Row -Left to Right: lietaneourt. Saeal. Goodwin. Knapp. Grantham. Varsity Soccer For the lirst time in ten years the Perkionlen hooters defeated the Hill Sehool with a seore of 2-l. Veteran senior and Co-eaptain Boh Grantham scored in the first quarter followed hy a Hill seore. Left wing star Lou Betaneourt. a freshman from Guatemala. fired a sueeessful shot in the third quarter to make Perk vietorious. After the game the entire team gathered around Coaeh Frank Light. who had lived for that day. and earried him trium- phantly off the field. Although the soeeer team suffered a losing season it saw one of the finest haekfields in the team's history. Rookie llave Shepherd turned out a marvelous performanee as goalie for a first-year man. Powerful Steve Goodwin was King Fullhaeku as he hooted the hall from elose to the goal to the Perkiornen line nearly sixty yards away. Pete The Greek Korovesis with his hardened hody defended Perkiomen's haekfield against Penn State Ugontz Center like a Champion. Senior ,lose Rios with the speed of lightning sparked the defensive unit many times. The great No 1 Man llamrong llinsri dazzled the opponents with his speetaeular display of tricky kicking. Halfhaek lien Sehwarz heeame the most improved player of the year. Mexican lineman Jose Saeal starred in the Perkiomen vietory over Nlereershurg as he tallied three hig goals. the last one assisted hy Sauter. to make the seore 3-2. Roger Erh in his third year was moved up to Varsity. and with his terrifie speed will he a key Varsity lineman next year. Another speed demon. Roger Palm, will he moved from ,l.V. to Varsity as he returns. lietaneourt will return as a sophomore to spark the line along with Erh and Palm. A eulmination of lack of experience. non-aggressiveness. and injuries all helped to eripple the line. Many linemen were new and had not worked with each other hefore: this too aeeounted for some of the team's difficulty. How- ever. the win over Mereershurg. the vietorious Hill game. and the smashing vietory over Southern Lehigh were evidenee of the fine squad of hoys that participated in soeeer this year. Go-eaptains of next year's team will he Steve Goodwin. and scrapping halfhaek Phil Knapp who showed mueh speed and leadership this year. First Row -Left to Right: Johnson. Speigleman, Orenstein. Shapiro. Second Row: Machat. Hinsri. Crunstein. Brassler, Mitchell, Vasquez. Coach Smith. Tennis Last yearis tennis team developed into one of the finest in Perkiomen's history winning 19 out of 20 matches. Seniors Crunstein, Vasquez, and Orenstein held three of the top six positions. At the opening of the season Dave Orenstein held the number one position. One of the outstanding matches of the year was the one in which Henry Vasquez of Habana, Cuba, and Damrong Binsri from Bangkok, Thailand, battled for eight consecutive points to win their game, their set, and the match. Coach Henry Smith termed it as One of the most beautifully played games I have ever seenw. Perkiomen saw the rising of a star as Summer School trophy winner Damrong Binsri fought his way to the number one position early in the season and remained there for the rest of his junior year. Joe was only a junior at the end of the season when he was awarded the annual tennis trophy for being the most improved player of the year. His third trophy was awarded to him last summer. Well. wonder boy is back again this year as a senior in the number one slot. Things are going to be a little rougher though this year. Dave ,loon- nasuphya also of Bangkok is a strong contender as is sophomore Bill Schooley who is presently num- ber two. Morgan Brassler is another Perkiomen star who made the varsity as a sophomore last year. Now he holds the number three position as a junior. Brassler, if he returns next year, will be the man to watch. As for now he. Joonnasuphya, Schooley, and Binsri are really in tight competition for the top positions. Dick Reed and Hector Hannam are holding fifth and sixth positions, and as under- classmen they will be top men this year as well as next year.
