0 THE CLASS 0F I9 6... As you near commencement you naturally have a feeling of end- ing or finishing at least one phase of your life. However, the very word commencement indicates beginning, not ending, and such is the situa- tion you face. Your years of preparation are now over, and you must begin. You must begin to live life, you must begin to face the world, you must begin to be men. The changes you will meet over the coming years will be great, startling, and even terrifying. There will be the ever present temptation to run back to boyhood and hide in the shadow of its innocence and naivete. Some will succumb, but most will iourney on with an eye on some distant star. We hope you will count your- selves among those who will not falter in seeking a goal for which you have just ended the first phase of preparation. We have put our faith and trust in you now. May the world have that same faith in the years to come. We do not attempt to deceive you into thinking the world is an easy place. lt is quite a hard place and appears at present to be get- ting harder every day. It seems that men must be hard to survive in this age. Such we have told you. But even more important than the hard quality of survival will be the gentle qualities of introspection, understanding, and appreciation. These are the foundation of a pre- paratory school. These are the qualities we have striven to impart to you in your days here, for these separate hard surviving existence from gentle intelligent life. When you are called upon to think, think not only long, but also well. Have no fear of using all the resources you possess, the more you use, the more you will have. Continue always your upward climb. Your end has not yet begun, rather, your be- ginning has just ended. May the future offer all its many re- wards to you. R. GREGORY SUTCLIFFE, JR.

STEPHEN W. ROBERTS Declica tion In the long and honored history of Perkiomen, the years that Stephen W. Roberts has been headmaster are but a small fraction. But the years before his appointment dim when set alongside his accom- plishments since then. An old graduate need only look briefly around him to see the manifestations of Mr. Roberts' care, deep devotion, and unstinting services to Perkiomen. Materially, Perkiomen has benefited much under the tutelage of Mr. Roberts. Material achievements, how- ever, are secondary when we consider the intangibles this good mon has brought us. His understanding and open heart, seeing the good in all of us, has brought Perkiomen something money could never buy. For his deep devotion to Perkiomen, the school, the students, we respectfully, sincerely, gratefully dedicate the 1956 Griffin to Head- master Stephen W. Roberts. Esto Perpetuo.
