ROBERTS Declica tion In the long and honored history of Perkiomen, the years that Stephen W. Roberts has been headmaster are but a small fraction. But the years before his appointment dim when set alongside his accom- plishments since then. An old graduate need only look briefly around him to see the manifestations of Mr. Roberts' care, deep devotion, and unstinting services to Perkiomen. Materially, Perkiomen has benefited much under the tutelage of Mr. Roberts. Material achievements, how- ever, are secondary when we consider the intangibles this good mon has brought us. His understanding and open heart, seeing the good in all of us, has brought Perkiomen something money could never buy. For his deep devotion to Perkiomen, the school, the students, we respectfully, sincerely, gratefully dedicate the 1956 Griffin to Head- master Stephen W. Roberts. Esto Perpetuo. 0 THE CLASS 0F I9 6... As you near commencement you naturally have a feeling of end- ing or finishing at least one phase of your life. However, the very word commencement indicates beginning, not ending, and such is the situa- tion you face. Your years of preparation are now over, and you must begin. You must begin to live life, you must begin to face the world, you must begin to be men. The changes you will meet over the coming years will be great, startling, and even terrifying. There will be the ever present temptation to run back to boyhood and hide in the shadow of its innocence and naivete. Some will succumb, but most will iourney on with an eye on some distant star. We hope you will count your- selves among those who will not falter in seeking a goal for which you have just ended the first phase of preparation. We have put our faith and trust in you now. May the world have that same faith in the years to come. We do not attempt to deceive you into thinking the world is an easy place. lt is quite a hard place and appears at present to be get- ting harder every day. It seems that men must be hard to survive in this age. Such we have told you. But even more important than the hard quality of survival will be the gentle qualities of introspection, understanding, and appreciation. These are the foundation of a pre- paratory school. These are the qualities we have striven to impart to you in your days here, for these separate hard surviving existence from gentle intelligent life. When you are called upon to think, think not only long, but also well. Have no fear of using all the resources you possess, the more you use, the more you will have. Continue always your upward climb. Your end has not yet begun, rather, your be- ginning has just ended. May the future offer all its many re- wards to you. R. GREGORY SUTCLIFFE, JR. With Mr. Fulton as their advisor, they would not allow themselves to be kept in the back- ground for they came forth to win a prize for their Student Night skit and ranked third on the House Average list. A few of its members were awarded J.V. and Varsity letters and there have been representa- tives in various other activities. Their represen- tative in the Student Senate is Michael Corbett. Many might remember the Sophomore skit which took second place in the program on Stu- dent Night. lt is certain that this will be a topflight Junior Class. That was the Junior Prom which was probably one of the greatest in school history. Much of the decorating was done by the president. The sponsor is Mr. Byerly, who is here for his first year. The president is Joel Levinson, vice- president, Clifford Cohen, and treasurer, Ber- nard Porchenick. With plans for next year already in shape, this should make an unexcelled Senior Class. THE FRESHMAN CLASS The Freshman Class was sponsored by Mr. Miller, a new member of the faculty. Its otticers were: Ned Loose, president, Jack Newsome, vice- president, and Paul Krueger, treasurer. Although the Freshman Class skit did not place very high on Student Night, it was as unique in that it was a rhyming verse. It is potentially a wonderful group, gifted in both sports and arts. The school is looking for- ward to seeing them progress on toward the Senior Class of '59. FRESHMAN CLASS Third Row: Bates, Bodine, .Iapps Krieger, Horner, Gaul, Rosen, Wer ner, Copenhaver. The President of the Student Senate is Robert Winston, the student President of the school. Ralph Freyberg, the Pres- ident of the Senior Class, is the Vice-President of the Council. The Secretary is Jeffrey Weiss, also President of the Sophomore Class. The Treasurer is Lee Lapensohn, B Floor Representative. THE SCIENCE CLUB The faculty advisors to the Science Club, which meets once a week, are Mr. Lytle, Mr. Hrisko, and Mr. Vipert. At each meeting either a demonstration is given in the form of an ex- periment or a scientific movie is shown. Some of the demonstrations this year have been: Tex- tiles, soap manufacturing, stain removers, elec- tric currents and how they are formed, chemical color tricks, the respiratory system, sugar and starch, and various dissecting. There have also been several field trips. Fred Habacht, a senior, is the student presi- dent. THE VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club which was totally dormant last year, came forth as one of the most active groups on the campus. Its otticers were Robert Winston, President, Donald Kohlhaas, Vice-President, Harold Soulis, Secretary, and Robert Lauver, Treasurer. The biggest project was the installing of a Whirlpool bath which cost over 300 dollars. The money was raised by the selling of refreshments during Fall athletic events. The School has recognized the Club by allow- ing the officers to sit in on the meetings of the Athletic Council to determine to whom Varsity letters will be awarded. It was organized late in the year as a result of considerable demand from a group of marksmanship-minded students. The authori- ties were understandably somewhat reluctant to see a sport so potentially dangerous get started. They agreed, however, that the activity was de- sirable if it could be carefully supervised and if the members ot the club came only from the most responsible of students. Cattrey, Hersh, Wolf. THE DRAMA TICS CLUB The Dramatics Club with Mr. Miller as the faculty advisor and Richard Bernstein as Presi- dent, had fifteen members this year. It decided early in the year to put on The Caine Mutiny Court Martial by Herman Wouk. It also decided to make money for next year's production by selling tickets. The royalty was high, as The Caine Mutiny Court Martial was very recently a hit on both stage and screen. Besides putting on a great production, this year's Dramatics Club lett a basis on which next year's members can work. Back Row IL to RJ: Thuma, Roth, Habacht, Mr, Miller, Romeo, Evans, Bodine, Weiss. The club's president is lvan Atencio. Mrs. Eleanore Roberts and Michael Thompson have served as accompanists to the group. The thirty-voice chorus will be remembered as among Perkiomen's finest. The Glee Club is made up of two subdivisions: the Yeomen made up of sixteen boys, and the Quintet, The Yeomen sang special Christ- mas music as well as at Chapel Services and at Strawbridge and Clothiers. The Quintet sang at Alumni banquets in our vicinity. The songs sung by the Glee Club ranged from Sing Praises to I Wish l were Single Again. The boys learned to mix a lot of good whole- some fun with their singing. Left Table: Lehner, Roth. Right Table: Mitchell, Viener, Feinman, Scheerer. Rear Table: Thompson, Freydberg, East- wood, Shaw. Back Row lL to Rl: Levitis, Habacht, Bodine, Worrel, Scheerer, Shaw, Koeneman, Lap- henson. Seated: Bernstein, Freydberg, Engel. THE PERKIOML-'NITE The School paper, the Perkiomenite, was once again a true paper. lt did not attempt to duck any of the issues of the day, but instead turned its full attention to them. Ralph Freydberg, editor-in-chief, Allan Engel, sports editor, and Richard Bernstein, feature editor, wrote Out Of The Freyd-Pan, Engel's Angles, and Topics of the Times, respectively. Ralph Freydberg, as a result of a trial edition with Juniors and Sophomores, said that some fine journalistic talent was uncovered in the in- novation. THE BRIDGE Cl UB Once again, this year, the Bridge Club can be classified as the most active club on campus. Under the leadership of Mr. Henry Smith, it had running matches with the faculty. Every evening after dinner and before studyhall, there are always at least three tables going full swing with Mr. Smith making the rounds helping out with the bidding and playing of hands. There has been such great improvement among the underclassmen that Mr. Smith knows he will have a competent club next year. Senior Co-Captain HARRY SOULIS nf The '56 varsity soccer team had the greatest soccer season that any Perkio- CHRIS SAHAKIAN men soccer team has had in the past five years. For the first time in the past three years the soccermen brought home a winning record. Their season was 9 wins and 3 defeats. Out of the three defeats two of them were close and excit- ing games that were won by the slimist of margins. This year's soccer team had a number of veterans from the previous year which helped them greatly. Also new Latin American students such as Hernando Mraquez, Carlos and Mario Restrepo were great aids to the team. Harry Soulis and Bob Lipkin, veterans from last year's team, co-captained the '56 squad. This year's team always kept their opponents on the go and were never outclassed, even if beaten. The team was coached by Mr. Brinker who did an excellent iob of piloting the team through rugged opposition. Wil Reinhard, elected Captain of this year's team came through undefeated with many wins in the 'l00, 440, and 220. Barry Rich, a new cinderman for Coach Weikel, also came through many times in the 880 and the mile. Barry had never run track before and looks like excellent material for next year's team. Richard Garret proved himself in the shot put, after many seasons of hard work. Record holder, Clem Kell, again did well in the pole vault. Carlos Restrepo, another new man, did our high iumping. We did not do too well this year at the Penn Relays, placing fifth. However, the team has been constantly improving and next year we will expect big things. n XM GRHTFIAI .
