THE LEADERS OF THE LEADERS The National Honor Society is an honor orgainzation for exceptional high school students. Members are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, ser- vice, and character, and distinguished by their abili- ty to maintain a 3.0 grade point average or better. It was founded in l92I by its sponsor, the National Association of Secondary-School Principals. The senior society has about l4,000 local chapters. The chapter at Julian was founded in I977, College schol- arships are awarded each year to top-ranking senior members. Their motto is: We strive for excel- lence . On the NHS: I believe education is essential and being a part of the NHS has given me a basis for knowing that I'm living up to the ideology of always striving for excellence in education. On advice to others: Always strive for excellence in education-it enables you to grow wholesomely as a human being. Bedder Squire-SECRETARY-TREASURER Activities: Captain of cheerleading squad, Big Sister program, President of Girls' Chorus, Director of choir at her church, Junior Achievement and a graduate of the Early IO Program at IIT. On the NHS: I think it's great to be a member- it means alot to me. I felt great when I was inducted, and felt even better when I was elected to office. Alexander SPONSOR The Light That Leads Us Mrs. Alexander is our proud sponsor of the National Honor Society chapter here at Julian. She began sponsoring the society in l979, two years after the program officially began at Julian. When asked about her present members, she comments that she loves them all and is really proud of their accomplishments. She enjoys being a sponsor, and encourages all future NHS candidates to work hard, have lots of activities, and try hard to attain strong leadership qualities . Mrs. Alexander flashes a winning smile during the NHS induction ceremony.

Academically, the group was formed to create a sort of brotherly atmo- sphere and to form study groups.
