Miss Reed, Mr. Meley, and Mr. Zahm, in addition, taught creative writing, journal- ism, and public speaking, respectively. A recent innovation of this department was the team teachingw by Miss Bicking, Miss Auer, and Mr. Zahm of the sophomores. The members of the English Depart- ment enhanced their lectures and class dis- cussions with visual aids such as records, Hlmstrips, and movies. Milan Kratzer, German, and Laurence Meley, French, comprised the Foreign Language Department. With the use ofthe newly completed language laboratory, every student was able to read aloud to himself and receive individual help from his instructor. John Whitton was employed as the reading teacher. Miss Auer, Miss Bicking, Mr. Meley .X . 1 N51-rx. 4 fi.. , 35 x .T 'abil A ikff is s it . -.,,-,-.:....,:,v.,..,, V... -7,-. .----- f- Vv-,Y-Y... John Koshuta and Peter Jarjisian served as the instrumental and choral directors, respectively. Mr. Jarjisian, in addition, taught classes of music appreciation and music theory. Mrs. Louetta Hurst and Martha Zepp comprised the Home-Ec. Department. The major project this year was the redecoration of the home-economics suite. Jack McCray has recently joined the staff as an agriculture teacher. The Industrial Arts Department has been strengthened by the addition of John Yuska and Lester Howerter to the veter- an teaching of Harold Brenner. Mr. Brenner has constructed benches and other equipment for the renovation of the lobby. Donald Bailey and Joann Kramer were the members ofthe Physical Education and Health Department. Miss Kramer in- troduced indoor recreation to several of her classes, and would like to initiate sports such as archery and tennis into next years schedule. Under the guidance of Mrs. Marie Futer, the art students have aided school and community organizations by silk screen- ing posters. Interest in macreme led to special classes after school. The driver education duo of Robert Gingher and Jeff Gam- ber have survived, as always, the escapades of novice drivers. Mr, Brenner, Mr. Jarjisian, Mr. Bassett, Mr, McCray. The Science Department, chaired by chemistry and physics instructor John Madigan, included Henry Deemer, John Kitch, and John Celli. Several new courses will soon be added to the Science Department, such as ad- vanced chemistry and an ecological study. Greater freedom will also be alloted to the students in their science choices. John Musser was elected to serve as chairman ol' the History Department, with its members being Eugene Wile, civics, Jefl' Gamber, P.0.D., Richard Gerz, American history, and Herbert Mc- Donald, geography. To stimulate the thinking ability of ev- ery American history student, Mr. Gerz introduced simulation games into his teaching format, which included such top- ics as labor in the United States, propa- ganda, and the Vietnam situation. His students were also asked to formulate debates and to discuss current information from phamphlets. , ,,..-.,,-5,v.-.- v-A U .--W-V--W -g A - Y- , -. . ,. iw, -77,7 U Mr. Wile, Mr. Whitton, Mrs. Hurst, and Miss Zepp A .. ig X Mr. Gerz, Miss Reed, and Mr. Celli 22 h ,,,Y, ,WW nga YW f- ,: r E t 9 53' ai' 5 if :I 1 1 4153? . A rise in independent study has also taken place in the 1971-72 term. Mr. Siegel, though he termed this year as fair, is anxious for change. He has re- quested the purchase of several pro- grammable calculators, and would like to see smaller classes and more individulized student work. nav' Mr. Adams, Mr. Siegel, Mr. Howerter, and Mr. Musser. . ,.... .. The goal of the Business Department, explained Mr. Bassett, is to train students for job entry. A deeper and more specialized program, however, is necessary for the Pequea student. Courses like graphic arts and accounting should be added to the curriculum. The business students served the entire school. Some aided teachers while others typed, stenciled, and ran off needed materials. Horace Martin served as Pequeals guidance counselor. The nursing duties were assumed by Mrs. Rhoda Hostetter. Mrs. Rosalye Yashek took command of the new li- brary facilities. Though extremely pleased with the greater amountof room available, her work has doubled. U STAN SPIRATIG The impetus for enthusiasm among team members and spectators, the cheerleaders provided an essential service to the sports program. Money-raising projects, to finance expenses, were a fashion show, a bingo booth at the spring carnival, and a mum sale at homecoming. Soccer cheerleaders included Deb Gurtizen, captain, Deb Brady, Diana Meyers, Ruth Stoltzfus, Karen Rice, and Deanna Stoltzfus. The cheering squad in wrestling was comprised of Deb Brady, cap- tain, Diana Myers, Deb Gurtizen, and Ruth Stoltzfus. Cheering with Eileen Rohrer, varsity basketball captain, were Joann Lichty, Karen Rice, Karen Jerchau, Mick Morrow, Deanna Stoltzfus, Heidi Lengacher, and Joan Frey. The members of the Junior Varsity cheerleaders included Bonnie Hepler, captain, Shannon McLerran, Glenda Reimold, Cindy Davis, Joanne Brackbill, and Michele Herr. 31 P The Braves, who were a favor- T ite to repeat the section one soccer title at the beginning of the season finished second behind a strong and surprising McCaskey team. Pequea concluded with a record of ten wins and eight losses. The soccer team's strength rest- ed in the return of eleven players who had seen starting duty the previous year. Heading the team was center forward Marlin Bene- dict. Randy Young, inside right, was Pequea's top scorer. The backbone of the defense included Mick Means an Scott Remley. Jim High and former Pequea athlete Bob Grabowski struggled for command ofthe ball during a game with L-S. Coaches Musser and Bailey watched the team perform from the sidelines. Although the hockey team entered league action optimistically after 7-0 victory over Columbia, they again fought through a winless season. They did tie with Penn Manor, however, and displayed an excel- lent brand of playing in the McCasky game, when they held who were to become the county champions scoreless for three-quarters of the game. Joann Lichty, topped the team's scoring with seven goals. The hockey girls were again guided by Joann Kra- mer. Miss Kramer, after serving as hockey coach for fifteen years, resigned at the conclusion of the 1971 season. She felt that a change was necessary, and is anxious to devote more time to her gym students and to her personal interests. AND DEDICATIO While Pequea's cross country team did not have the best season record-wise, the harriers defeated Ephrata and Garden Spot and lost by only a single point to Manheim Central, Columbia, and Conesto- ga Valley. Vernon Marshall, meanwhile, proved to have one of the best rec- ords in the county. In his fourth year of running, he made All-Coun- ty First Team as third runner. Course records were broken by Ver- non at Columbia, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Central, Ephrata, and at home. He also placed third in the county meet at Longs Park among approximately 112 runners. Senior John Marshall was honored as seventh runner on th second team. Other seniors Jerri Parmer and Jack Keene traded as fourth and fifth runners throughout the season. PGRTSMANSHIP 41 Due, in part, to limited practices and frequent injuf ries, the girls, basketball team compiled a dismal l-9 record, defeating only Manheim Township and, in a scrimmage, LMS. Though the girls were strong up through the third quarter, the other teams often surpassed them in the final minutes of play, as evidenced by the narrow vic- tory of Solanco, 33-30. Coach Patricia Reed, however, drew attention to the point that the Pequea girls were often compli- mented on their good sportsmanship and pleasant behavior. Janet Moscovic, who led the teamls scoring with 105 points, was named All-County Honorable Mention. John Mace, as the stern, domineering Principal McHabe, was rarely able to cope with the faculty's requests. fSue Bouder, Yvonne Bomberger, Pris Sands, Polly Houck, Bonnie Hepler, Jack Keenej P THE DOW IRCAS Up the Down Staircasew was unlike any other Pequea play. It's modern con- struction combined realism with the mem- ories, thoughts, and dreams of characters. Relevance was it's theme. Performed by thirty-nine members of the Junior and Senior classes, the piece starred Jean Ellis as Sylvia Barrett, a new- ly-hired teacher at a tough school district in New York City. Particularly notable performances in- cluded those of Polly Houck, as the prim director of the IMC, Marcie Beiler, who enacted the life and death of a confused and unloved teenager, and Dave Poteete, who played the frightening role of Joe Ferone. The realistic antics of the Staircase students and the sensitive portrayal of the faculty's frustrations were appreciated by the viewers. Miss Reed worked long and diligently with the Junior and Senior cast members, guiding them to a commendable final presentation. DISE UI . .... . lsllll ll0l1dq! Under the guidance of Mr. Jarjisian, each member worked long and ar- dently to perform his best. The Christmas concert, presented to a full house, featured the entire chorus, an orchestra, and a guest soloist, Larry Ownes, in Ralph Vaughn Wil- liams' FANTASIA ON CHRISTMAS CAR- OLS. An exciting first for the choir was the record- ing produced of the program. Particularly memorable selections from the Spring Choral concert include Danny Boy,', S,- wonderful , Fiddler on the Roof , and Dry Bonesv. Two additional favorites were the mens' Coney Island Baby and There Is Nothin' Like a Damen. The Chambersingers, a newly formed unit of twenty-seven voices, studied more difficult music than the general chorus. They gave additional con- certs for school and community events, and sang at nearby churches. Each of this year's seniors, with memories of voice exercises, amoebas, practice tensions, and good laughs, will always consider chorus an inte- gral part oftheir Pequea Valley career. l Mr. Jarjisian demonstrated a droppedjaw to the sopranoes. Although the enthusiasm of the band mem- bers was less than spirited, the hardworking core of the band kept pace with Mr. Koshuta and with the arrival of the special activities came sparks of excitement and, generally, fine performances. In the fall, the Band of Braves participated in the 22nd Penn State Band Day and were specta- tors to a football game between Penn State and Maryland University. The band and drill team were also invited to perform as a pep device for the Philadelphia 76er's in an exhibition game against the New York Knickerbockers at Mill- ersville State College. Highlighting the bands events was the ex- change with Maynard, Massachusetts. A con- cert was presented to the public of Maynard on Saturday, after many hours of practice. As a result of a snow blizzard the trip home, slated for Sunday, was delayed until Monday. Shortly after the arrival home the band pre- sented its annual Spring concert to conclude its activities. The brass and woodwind sections sparked enthusiasm at a pep rally. f V ,A , Z of Z 1 as Zf ss N xxx ,Zi v TV , . i 5, Q r 4 i W. wwmx Miss Bicking cnthusiasnically defended the goal cage from oncoming hockby 73 W W0 Q ff ff XWZY Z f if 5 f bi F: 1: 'sf-.ji 1 3, 'lf --ii ' 'kj I 1, J.. !J SW E he ,t , 1 ik.: . ., , .
