Nearly every day a look around the building any time after three o'clock would have found fifty to seventy students who apparently did feel like staying. Some of them carried hockey sticks, some bounced tennis balls, and others simply ran. But all of them were in practice for competitive sport. Theirs was the fun and the work of getting into shape, learning the game, perfecting skills, and finally testing their abilities in competition with other schools. For them another dimension was added to their school life, and tradition continued to grow at Pequea Valley this year. When the season began with losses to non league opponents the team left the fields defeatedly Traditionally Pequeais strong sport, once again soccer brought a season of victory to the school. In true Pequea Val- ley soccer fashion, the team won one game after another, bringing them to first place. Naturally the triumphs of the team had an effect on school pride and spirit. Spectator numbers began to in- crease. Original posters soon plastered the halls, urging the guys on to another win. The first two months of school had a special flavor to them because of soc- cer victories. :Ist defeatedly. From the sidelines Coaches Bailey and Musser watched the action, knowing how the team could have improved its playing. If a game wasn't going well, half-time meant instructions from Mr. Bailey and a re- newal of effort. is nfl The team was down and the crowd tensed, hoping for a change. In mid-October, the annual Home- coming Day was held. The Varsity team won its game against the Alumni, a rather remarkable feat since a number of former Pequea soccer players have been named all-American. A dance was held in the evening, during which returning queen, Sharon Stoltzfus, crowned Doris Kauffman Homecoming Queen 1970. Her court included Sharon Wenger, Linda Rohrer, Sue Mast, and Dolly Reeser. The occasion was celebrated on Friday evening, October 16. 'MMR A substitute in for him an it from the other team. Of course victory doesnit just come naturally. By the third week of August, the team was at school preparing for the coming season. For the first three weeks practices had to be endured in bare feet. Sprints and running a mile every night soon brought the team to necessary fitness. Fundamental skills had to be re- viewed and polished. A great deal of the making of a good team lies with its coach. Mr. Bailey pushed the team to want to do well. So they went into games prepared in many ways. After a season of hard work a goal was reached: we were section cham- pions. The team entered districts hopefully and in high spirits. The feeling toward the game with Fleetwood, champions of their own section, was reflected as they neared the school: the whole team bus dropped to complete silence. With Terry Blessing not playing because of injury and a lack of team pull, the game did not go very well. Chances for district championship were lost, but the team had every right to beyproud of itself for having played a fine season. d Dennis Hackenberger came to the bench exhausted. , B. IMPRO EME T SHGW Although the team had only three wins, this year,s record was the best one since cross country became a varsity sport at Pequea Valley four years ago. Coached by Mr. Siegel, runners included Glenn Miller, Brad Meyer, Sam Lynch, Tim Kauffman, Vernon Marshall, John Marshall, Jerry Parmer, Jack Keene, and La Rue Huyett. Vernon Marshall contin- ued to be Pequea's outstanding runner. Not all the running was in league meets. Hockey shared the fate of most Pe- quea sports this year - a losing season. Despite the record the girls will take with them memories of Miss Kramer's Hustle!,, and six laps around the field, shin guards, skills, pep talks, and before game chants and songs. And they may remember a game with McCaskey, the county's best team, when Pequea refused to let them score in the second half. Per- haps because of their participation, the hockey players did win in some way. As someone tried to score, Bobbie Hrllard positioned herself to guard the goal cage. ill I I4 faces of the team reflected L Remleyl CCESS ff? Actual playing wasn't the only kind of participation. In practices such as this the team improved its CCindy Eshelmanj skills. CMary Lichty, Yvonne Lefeverj N BASKETBALL Mr. Kratzer and coaches Miss Reed and Miss Bicking watched from the bleachers with other members of the team as the games progressed. The girls fared only a little better than the boys, winning two games, both non- league. If height and experience can improve performance, next year's team should be in better shape. Three tall ju- niors, Becky Brown, Janet Moscovic, and Cindy Eshelman will be returning. Janet received All-County Honorable Mention this year. 33 I 1-luv una gurfhug, k A. The coaches, Mr. Slusser and Mr. Martin, are hopeful that the junior high team begun this year will strengthen future teams. The hopes of the rifle team were high this year with four wins, eight losses. Wins were against Garden Spot, Done- gal, and Manheim Central. Rifle has the distinction of being the only co-ed sport at Pequea, and the girls took their share of the responsibility, with the top average won by Sue Hostetter, who was closely followed by Vicki McKillips. Tony Norris carried the pitching load and lead the league with 98 strike-outs. The end of the season was more encouraging, with four wins in the last live games. One of the highlights of the season came when the Braves beat Cocalico to eliminate the Eagles from contention for lirst place. Tony Norris was voted to the second team of the Lancaster County All-Stars. Barry Acker and Sam Lynch received honorable mention. The season ended with the Varsity soundly defeating the faculty. I i 37 Seniors may remember the 1968 tennis days of foreign exchange student Odd Holcksteen and Craig Crandall and the team's record of 7 wins, l loss that year. They may also recall that in the past few years, the sport hasn't flourished. This year tennis began its comeback, pulling into fifth place in the league with a final record of 8 wins, 7 losses. Although the greatest strength came from the under- classmen, senior Brad Meyer was a big asset to the team. He had a league rec- ord of 5 wins, 10 losses, but his form and technique were such that they pro- vided an excellent example to under- classmen players. His willingness to help less knowledgeable players was an extra aid to coach Mr. Koshuta. l P EW HOPE li In his fourth year of competition, Brad Meyer played number one on the team. Three periods a week the student body involved itself in clubs, intramurals, and various organizations. Competition between teams, tournaments, long evening practices, and perfor- mances became a part of life at school. As the year progressed, individual application, group effort, and faculty guidance combined to produce concerts, plays, and social events. New friends were made, ideas formed, and abilities polished. This year's senior bandsmen will have been the last to be members of the band for six yearsg they have done a lot. In 1966, the band took part in the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Virginia. The following spring was the State Lions, Convention in York. Then in 1967-68 the school bought new band uniforms, an event that non-band stu- dents will remember also. They also marched in competition at Harrisburg, receiving an Excellent', rating. As soph- omores they went to Penn State for Band Day, when bands from all over the state meet to present a show at half-time. Last year the band participated in its first exchange, travelling to Mansiield, Massachusetts. The Bucknell Band Day and the exchange with Fleetwood marked this yearis band activities. On June 6, 1971, the seniors marched in the annual parade in Gap, their last performance with the Pequea Valley Band of the Braves. In preparation for greeting the Fleetwood band, signs were being hung and decorations made. Our chorus bid them good-bye Sunday morning and began to prepare for the following week-end when Pequeais singers would go to Lewisburg. The sound of their voices echoing throughout the rotunda will long be remembered by this year's chorus members. For many of the seniors 1970-71 marked the sixth year of participation in the chorus. By the time they reached their last year, chorus had become a very big part of their school life. Knowing the memories the departing seniors would take with them, Mr. Jarjisian planned one final period of full chorus singing. Without speaking a word throughout the hour, they sang the songs that had been learned during the year. When the last Amen of Hymn for Our Time died away, the expressions on the faces of the seniors betrayed that they realized they had just concluded years of singing and of learning together. To Mr. Jarjisian, each song meant a thought or a feeling to be grasped and to be communicatedg and it meant another challenge for him - to help the chorus reach that understanding. Held at Dutch Town and Country Inn, the social event was the last one of their school career for the seniors. Dur- ing the last few weeks before the big night, the whole school began to feel the importance of the date. Guys were mak- ing up their minds who they would like to take, and then trying to gather up enough courage to ask. Talk of gowns and flowers circulated among the girls. And finally the usual half attendance on the day of the Prom' reminded everyone that the time had come. VVhen the refinement of the Prom itself was over, couples relaxed at the post-Prom, held at Strasburg. Escorted by Randy Trego, Yoke was crowned Prom Queen as a fitting climax to her year in America. CUpperJ Together, Juniors and Seniors shared a final event of the school year. Students found in course selections, independent courses began to the new Vo-Tech schools open, there was a better everyone to have a better rounded education if he wanted Leistet' and the administration are responsible for these we thank them. o Some changes could be noticed within the teaching department as well. Although a number of new members joined the faculty this year, teacher turn-over has dropped significantly in the past few yearsj And students have noticed a greater flexibility and openess in teaching methods. i These changes are proofs of growth at Pequea, a continuing reach toward better education.
