In this publication the activities, curricular and otherwise, of the year 1958-59 are recorded for posterity. The central theme, nautical in nature, is inspired by the class motto - - Now we are launched, where shall we anchor? We, the class of 1959, wish to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have made possible the com- piling and publication of this fourth edition of the Pe- quoian. We especially thank Mr. Denlinger for This advice and assistance. We extend thanks to the administration and the rest of the faculty for their co-operation, g To Mr. Shelley, our photographer, and Mr. En- singer, our printer, we also express our appreciation. -ll ,Y-'tv ,id- , rl -4.-P l OX ine Y-age MG' ia 59 x T565 U X95 f p., Yleco agp OX W N103 p -. Eshelman l I I .79 ai 4. Members of the Class of '59 - - Someone has said, Youth is the time of blossoms and blue skies and laugh- ing waters. Yours is a generation that has a greater challenge to face than any that has ever preceded it. You will be called upon to help carry the torch of democracy forward. It is incumbent upon you to maintain the humane spirit, to grow in sympathy, in humility and at the same time in understanding, in courage and in devotion to the public good. In this task you will meet much competition which you must overcome through the sweat of your labors and the strength of your dreams before you can make your heritage secure for your generation. Yours is a great responsibility. Weigh it well. This is not a hopeless world. Remember this great country depends on you and others of your gen- eration to supply what we have failed to give it. You somehow must have the power and, we hope, the will to fill the need. You will have the opportunity to serve. You could not ask for more of life. Within your generation many of the political, social and economic formu- las must be revised. They must be brought into a more intelligent and workable relationship with the changed circumstances of this age of the Power of the Atom. This revision will bring about a demand for a new kind of statesman. Statesmen of character, honesty and dependability - - a statesmanship which demonstrates the truth of the proverb, Righteousness exhalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. H The hope of the world lies in our youth - - thinking, sincere, dedicated, educated, courageous youth. Look into the future with a spirit of high adventure, with a breath of vision that pushes you ahead, with a creative spirit that opens unlocked doors d ' h ' . an wit a courage that comes from a great faith and your gen- eration cannot fail. b It isn't an easy road ahead, nor a simple task to overcome. It has never een that for any generation of Americans. But we believe with your convictions and determi ' . nations you are ready to start on the most difficult and demanding life ahead. T0 youth - America's finest - her young men and women finishing high school - - - are you ready? We give you our best wishes and may providence be kind with you. ARTHUR W. ESHELMAN Principal. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Harry V. Pownall 0 0 9 Strong bodies and special skills are not enough to produce champions. No, not even will power and determination will do this. It is important to think right , and be in harmony with the universe. Those who achieve the greatest accomplishments are in time with the master plan of life, functioning like a well synchronized mechanism. The traits of character which give us individuality also make an impression upon the lives of our fellows and, therefore, give us a place in their lives. The members of your class have manifested themselves to one another and have thus given a meaning to their lives which is worthy of record in the Pequoian. Therefore, the Pequoian is a record and an interpretation of yourselves through your activities while in our school. Reading this volume from time to time will enhance its value, hence make high school life become richer and more meaningful. HARRY V. We, the .5966 would be the first class to graduate after having completed our entire high school career in the new building. This was our beginning, and we looked for- ward with keen anticipation to the rest of our days at Pequea. We elected as our officers: President - Lanny Ammon, Vice President j- Nancy Beane, Secretary - Joanne Milley, and Treasurer - Paul Hershey. 'This was our year to observe. We busied ourselves by supporting our championship soccer and basketball teams and by attending other school functions to find out just what was going on. Our hine came near the end of the year when we were honored at the first annual Ninth Grade Night . As sophomores we elected the following officers: President, James Eck- man, Vice President - Lanny Ammon, Secretary - Joanne Milley, Treasurer - Paul Hershey. To increase the small amount in our treasury, we sponsored a dance after the Warwick basketball game. We called it The Sock Hop . Fond memories of dancing in stocking feet have been held by all who attended. A grand time was had during the swimming party at Millersville when everyone manned a water pistol. The school year was brought to a perfect end at Red Point. We even made the headlines on that one. chance to s Our junior year, which proved to be a year of hard work and honest ef- fort, was begun by our ordering school jackets and class rings. Then to work we went. We sponsored a car wash on one of those cold fall days. Our hard workers slowly dwindled down to a few, as this was the time the Asian flu began to spread through the student body. We worked hard to promote the success of the Junior-Senior Play, Room for the Groom . Our assembly program, in the form of a variety show, was presented in January. Once again we spon- sored a dance. This time The Bandstand Bop was our theme. Lanny and the Juniors certainly was the main attraction and reason for a big success. Memories of a blizzard and attending school on Saturday also enter into the picture at this time. Plans for the reception-prom began to develop, and before we knew it we were once more racking our brains for ideas. We decided upon Rhapsody in Blue as our scheme for decorating. What a great time we had preparing for it, and how pleased we were when all ended well! Our class officers for the year were: President - Nancy Beane, Vice President - Charles Perella, Secretary - Joanne Milley, and Treasurer - Paul Hershey. A trip to Red Point once again brought an end to a successful year. The all important year, finally, was no longer just around the corner. It was here, and we were determined to make the most of it. The following officers were elected: President - Nancy Beane, Vice President - Lanny Ammon, Sec- retary - Joanne Milley, and Treasurer - Paul Hershey. Our first project was that of au bake and soup sale, which proved profitable. The annual trip to the United Nations Building materialized on November 21. Once again much tune and effoftfvas Put into the Junior-Senior Play by our class members. The Nlght was Dark couldn't have had better character parts for the '59ers. As seniors We planned to have two dances, but due to snow we had only one, The '59ers Frolic The month of May certainl ' ' ' . ' y kept us st . The fall of 1958-59 proved to be a successful one at Pequea Valley as far as athletic contests Were concerned. This was especially true in soccer, Where the Braves won 14 of 16 scheduled games. The only losses Were in non-league games, and came at the hands of much larger schools. In addition to winning every league game, Pequea Valley turned a trick un- precedented by a Lancaster County team. After eliminating Bethel Township, Berks County, the team defeated james Buchanan, Franklin County, for the district title. The Braves ended a fine season by defeating Lower Merion, District One title holder, by a LO score, giv- ing Pequea Valley the Interdistrict title. This is the extent of interscholastic fall soc- cer in the state. In the remainder of the L4 V D state, soccer, if played, is a spring sport.
