w lroeli FRI VAT! 1 DOQOOOOOOOOOOCOCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO A day in the sun away from school 18 something that high school students only dIeam about. New students to Seaver College who spent their time studying rather than snoozin g through high school ran away on Freshman Friday in September. This year the frosh gathered to have a day of fun and get to know one another at an Oxnard park. Sun, games and food awaited students as they escaped their Friday classes, something that upperclassmen now regard with envy. Brandon Williams, last year's Student Government Association president, helped to organize the eventg MAliLu Terlt It seems only fitting that an event with the name Malibu Yerk Contest be held for freshmen during New Student Orientation Week at Seaver College. What is a yerk? How does one avoid becoming one? After a week of life in a new place these questions are among those no freshman wishes to investigate. Leave the answers to Jerry Shipp, assistant director of intramurals. A yerk, he says, is a word that means a large burst of energy in a brief period of time. The annual athletic competition, sponsored by the intramurals department, Hefty Enthusiastic freshman and New Student Orientation leaders pose at Oxnard Park after their day off from school at the beginning of the year. What might be thought of as an Intro to the Beach class is an annual event sponsored by the SGA to help freshmen adjust to their new life at Pepperdine University. This years event featured Dr. David Davenport, university president, who spoke to the students to encourage them to make the most of their years at Pepperdine. Freshman John Alejandro says he got to meet everyone and had a good time. High school students can dream on or come to Pepperdine, where at least one day a year it's okay to play hooky. is so named because of the way the contest is structured. On Saturday, three to four events are held during a two-hour period, each lasting about 20 minutes with three intermissions. This year, eight teams of freshmen competed in innertube water polo, volleyball, tug of war and ultimate frisbee. After all the headaches of registration, it's a nice way to relax, have fun and get ready for Frosh Follies on Sunday, Shipp says. Freshman Rob Bames, who was on the winning team, consisting of men from Dorm 4 and the women from Dorm 3 and 5, says, I think it brought me closer to the people in my dorm and helped me feel more involved. A band also provided German entertainment. The Student Government Association hosted a human chess game that was loads of fun for all involved. Students were also given coupons from Malibu Yogurt, sponsored by the Impressions yearbook staff. The Zeta Kappa sorority sponsored a hairstyling booth where many new and fascinating styles were created.
