By Charlene Guanco It is not every day a body of water rushes into a room and instills a sense of comradcry — this feeling of unity is only experienced when cheering for a college team. Well the surf's up and look what the tide's brought in -Pepperdine’s mascot, Willie the Wave. After several years of searching for a mascot that truly captures the Pepperdinc school spirit, the alumni and Student government officials collaborated on ideas, held a design competition, had a costume made and turned the wave concept into a reality. Willie the Wave has made several appearances at Pepperdinc athletic activities and people have mixed reactions about him. Sophomore Steve Ganobcik says, Willie the Wave is a good idea. He’s fun to watch and looks good.” If there's one thing Willie the Wave has been doing right, he is making a lot of waves. Chris DiBattisia, head of Student Government Association spirit committee, told the Los Angeles Times. “We don’t think controversy is a bad thing. We hope that he gains a lot of attention. After all, he's important. He is our school mascot.” Willie has helped to generate school spirit. Ugly or not, some people are simply, glad Pepperdinc finally has a mascot,” Melissa Wicchmann, sophomore, said. With DiBattisia and Willie’s enthusiasm, Pepperdinc has begun to develop a spirited student body. ?£:d - a new mascot, Willie Into cheering the tea ha
