By Marni Elkins Much of Pcpperdinc’s history is a mystery lo students. The fact that George Pepperdine established a school in downtown Los Angeles 50 years ago is the extern of most students’ knowledge. In 1909, Pepperdine began a mailorder business that is known today as Western Auto Supply Company. The business was going quite well by 1937, and Pepperdine asked, How can humanity be helped most with the means entrusted lo my care? Friends and family encouraged him to found a Christian college where, in his own words. “Values would not be divorced from knowledge. Four buildings were constructed and Batscll Baxter, then president of David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tennessee, was coaxed to become the college's ascoaxcow.— dedicated on September 21.1937. Pcpperdinc’s dream was to “build a foundation of Christian character and faith which will survive the storms of Hur ------------------------------------- Pepperdine died in 1963. Six years later, 138 acres were donated by the Adamson family in Malibu. Construction of a new campus began, and in 1970 university status became a reality. Pepperdine continues to grow and expand. A School of Law. the Graduate School of Education and Psychology and the School of Business and Managemem have all added lo die University. The “Wave of Excellence campaign allowed the Thornton Administration Center to be built, as well as die recent expansion and renovauon of Payson Library.
