Those Ireshmen are on the lookout for something in their presentation during Frosh Follies. Seniors Jacki Carnahan and John Jirschelske show their patriotic spirit as they arc the hostess and host lor Frosh Follies '88. By Robyn Sadler Freshmen and transfer students had the option of attending either the traditional Summer Conference held in June or a new program called New Student Orientation held between Aug. 24 and Aug. 31. Since the Summer Conference tended to interfere with students’ summer jobs, this year Peppcrdinc offered an orientation which directly preceded the first week of school. New students were required to attend one of these sessions because it gave them an extensive amount of time to interact in a small group and acquaint themselves with the campus. Campus Life chose 45 student to be counselors from 150 applications. The students were trained Aug. 24 to Aug. 31 to be knowledgeable, honest and positive about the campus. The two orientation programs were relatively similar. However, die New Student Orientation included the famous Malibu Yurk Contest and Frosh Follies, which were both held at the end of the week. To celebrate the end of New Student Orientation and begin the school year, the Sigma Epsilon fraternity sponsored the Pier Dance. Traditionally, this dance has been held after the beginning of school, but the fraternity and Campus Life decided to combine the two events this year. rientation By Robyn Sadler Baylor University started the program. Texas A and M picked up the tradition and Pepperdine has implemented it. The event is Freshman Friday. 1 he students met Dr. Howard White, president emeritus, and listened to several speakers. Helen Young who graduated in Pcppcrdinc’s class of 1939, the second class, and Dr. Olaf Tegner, a Graduate School of Education professor of psychology, spoke to the students and helped them to foster a sense of unity among the freshmen, as well as the whole Pepperdine family, said Williams. Held at (he Calamigos Ranch in Kanan Dumc. students and administrators played volleyball, roasted hot dogs and performed skits. The location, said Williams, was perfect for the event. The casual setting provided for an evening of good times for all. This was the first year Pepperdine has had a program like this. Williams knew of Baylor's program and decided to begin one at Pepperdine. Considering that this was the first year, the number of students who attended was surprisingly high. Of the 190 who signed up. 140 actually attended, and 100 stayed until 7:30 p.m.. the end of the program. The blind feeding tho blind was a game that was played at Freshman Friday. Obviously this new student had a partner who hadn't taken anatomy as he didn't know where to locale the mouth. We re all tied up. shout this enthusiastic group ol Ireshmen as they race to Ihe finish line in Ihe lour-legged race which was part ol the activities in the anniversary celebration.

For most Seaver students, the hours after dark provide an opportunity to relax, work off the day's stress and often work off calorics. While some students hit the books, others arc hitting the tennis courts. Fun and games with friends is often the best way to forget about the academic day to follow. For employed students, hours al ter dark provide on-the-job experience or just some extra spending money. Whatever the favorite activity. Seaver after hours offer a variety of good times.
