Dedicated to his important role as President of Pepperdine, Dr. M. Norvel Young is a study of a man of character devoted to principle, a college chief executive of ability and prodigious energy. Few who come to know him fail to mark him as a man of direction, one who knows his goals and those of the institution he serves. Dr. Young at home with daughters Sara and Marilyn. 5- . DR. J. P. SANDERS University of Southern California Dr. Sanders cou nseli ng. A small, liberal arts college requires of its dean a unique blend of character: exacting scholarship laced with student understanding, the dignity of a don mitigated by familiar warmth in everyday campus affairs, In Dean J. The student is taught to read with comprehension, to think with clarity, and to write and speak with precision and power. Beauty in all its manifestations is cultivated. The student's powers of discrimination are sharp- ened, that he may respond to and choose the highest expression of creative art, not only in literature but in other fields. SOCIAL SCIE CE The social science department presents a variety of majors, each of which represents a critical approach to the study of human beings in social interaction. The subject matter is essentially the same for all social sciences, and no part of it is set off as the exclusive ground for any of them. The work of the department is correlated with the study of individual man as a biological organism and as a psycho- social heing and furnishes important concepts and data for use in such applied fields as teaching, government, business, social work, home management, and religious work.
