One reoson that Pepperdine is so popular with the students is the friendliness shown at the numerous all-school activities carried on throughout the year, activities in which all of the students are able to particiote. Here are some of the things that took place. HOMECOMING—Construction of floats, election of queen and princesses, homecoming parade and the big football game that followed. AIL-SCHOOL PICNIC—Everyone took the day off for fun and frolic at one of the many southland playgrounds. Competition between classes, election of the picnic queen and the annual Sophomore-Freshman tug-of-war highlighted the day. HELLO WEEK—A full week devoted to getting acquainted. Prizes were awarded to the people who said hello the right number of times to the right people. SMORGASBORD AND MELTING POT BANQUET—Two big get-togethers sponsored by Alpha Gamma. Lots of good food at both affairs. FACULTY-STUDENT BASKETBALL GAME—The final and biggest basket-boll game of the year when the all-intramural squad lined up against the wackiest bunch of profs'' you hove ever seen. VARSITY VARIETIES—The annual charity show put on by the students. SPRING SING—One of the big events of the year for social clubs. Phi Beta sponsors the big show where all of the clubs on campus display their talents in hope of winning the coveted top prize. All proceeds from this favorite student octivity go toward helping a needy child receive treatment in the Pepperdine Psychology-Speech Clinic. WESTERN DAY—A get together where everyone (including the faculty) comes to school garbed in his favorite western outfit. MOTHER-DAUGHTER BANQUET—It's only for girls! All of the gals get to show off their moms and vie for the honor of which girl and mother look the most alike. OPEN HOUSE—For once the dorms get a thorough cleaning. The campus is open to the public and prizes are awarded to the dorm showing the most effort in cleanliness. ALL-SCHOOL CARNIVAL—A night of playing games and chewing on candied apples. All of the social clubs have booths, the barkers bark, and clubs' treasuries grow and everyone has a gay time. PaUtf Dial of Ifavvn It ff « i o o in in 1 i'1'ii Uvr four 0 Koy Morlow. WREATHY AIKEN IODISE ASHBY 79 iiunu Economies GEORGE PEPPERDINE COLLEGE is wholly dedicated to the ideals and practices of democracy and Christianity. In o world that is retreating from freedom on many fronts, we stand squarely for full freedom for all men everywhere under self-determined, just law; in a world where the great majority of people live under the tyranny of dictatorships of the right or the left, we believe that the only people, and for the people”; in a world that worships the State and worldly power we respect the rights and worth of individual men and women; in a world that is fear-ridden and quick to use any measure against its real or imagined enemies, we urge that democracy should have the faith to practice its own principles even in emergencies; in a world broken, torn and sorely divided, we work for understanding, cooperation, world organization and effort that will build the foundations of peace and good will; in a world where humanity is dangerously divided into races, cultures, and classes, we teach that all men are made in the image of God and should have equal opportunities and rights in all areas of life; in a world that turns thoughtlessly to fads and cure-alls for man’s problems, we teach the age old virtues of hard work, honesty, fair play, tolerance, faith, selfless service as the only hope for a genuinely better world for free men. To exemplify and teach these great democratic ideals is an abiding purpose of Pepperdine College. M£Ul£ CQi ffnic ? Its purpose is to record the outstanding events of the year, to preserve lasting memories of college life and to contribute to the building of a better college for the years ahead. There is another purpose, usually overlooked, to provide an educational experience for those who participate in preparing the book. As a learning endeavor, mistakes are bound to occur; but on those mistakes rests the hope of learning new techniques and procedures which will be constantly utilized in other projects of a similar nature. The 1955 Promenade represents the diligent efforts of many students working together on a common enterprise. Most serious of the omissions to bo found in the book is the absence of pictures of many of the faculty. We therefore wish to acknowledge the following men ond women, and perhaps others not named, who make Pepperdine College outstanding among institutions of higher learning — a group skilled in the arts of teaching and working with young people — the academic staff. We apologize for the absence of many of your pictures, ond we deeply appreciate your understanding of the omission. Aft Mary Jane Haden Ruth Langford Eugene White Hanson A.
