Dr. Rayond Kellis became the new superintendent as Mr. Mel Huber relinquished that position to become the principal at the district's new Cactus High School. Dr. Ardith Dropper was hired as Assistant Superintendent to the secondary level. She formerly worked for the Thunderbird School District. The young Panthers proved to be very strong as they whipped Independence 82-O. Coach Gollihare was very proud and said that his team had a lot of spirit and pride for PI-IS . A rivalry began with the Cactus Cobras, Peoria's District's other high school. When the Panthers took to the turf, they wasted no time scoring the first touchdown of the game. Students involved in Boys State and Girls State learn the foundations of city, county, and state govemements through practical self-operation Students are selected on the basis of their interest in governmental operations, their values regarding high standards of life, possession of good morals, and a respect for law and order. Both activities are workshop oriented. Students are permitted to engage in constructive and worthwhile social activities during both workshops' scheduled arrangements. Boys State is traditionally held at the University of Arizona in Tucson , and Girls State is found at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. Both workshops occur during the summer months. Kathy Kelly is an honor student and cheerleader who plans to attend NAU and major in computors and physical therapy. Walter Loerzel played football, was President of Future Farmers of America, wrestled, and was the the Month, and received the Civitan Citizenship Award. He plans to attend Glendale Community College and the U of A majoring in agriculture . It is rumored that he knits too. Lori Massini was Homecoming Queen, played tennis, was Student Body Vice President, received the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, and received an NAU Award for Leadership. Lori plans to attend NAU and obtain a degree in medicine . Angela Norris participated in FFA, Mat Maids, French Club, Pep Club, Model U.N. , was Student of the Month, and made the Honor Roll all four years. X.. frlw' 5 POLAND SPAIN Model United Nations Represents Spain nd Poland At Annual Tucson Convention THE DELEGATES TO the Model United Nations from Peoria High School represented the cotmuies of Poland and Spain at the annual Tucson convention held at the University of Arizona . The Wildcats campus hosted the event. Many events highlighted the convention of delegates . Peoria's delegates found themselves immersed in such world problems as transatlantic business and corporations and shipping. Some attended the United Nations' Conference on Trade and Development. One bombshell at the convention occurred when Russia and China mutually declared war in formal and informal declarations that completely expressed terms of extreme hatred. Peoria's delegate to Poland, Rick Kelly, informed the japanese delegate that Poland would threaten to drop a thousand cows on japan should the japanese delegate refuse to vote with the Communist bloc nations. Delegates from Canada, Spain and South Africa threatened to burn Romania to the ground because the Romanian delegate would not cooperate with a floor motion to recess for lunch. The activities were changed from classes constructing floats to class participation. Participation days were as follows: Monday October 23, Seniors dressed up in the styles of the 5O's. Lunch hour activity was a dance contest. Tues. Oct. 24, Juniors competed in paying tribute to the 60's era . Lunch hour activities included a Voltswagon Craniming contest between classes. Wed. Oct. 25, Sophomores had a 70's celebration day. Lunch hom' activities included a disco dance contest and a best dressed contest. Thurs. Oct. 26, Freshman took us back in time to the 40's with the popular styles of its days . Club's Dance Contest where attributed to the beautiful booths students bought tickets to compete constructed by the students during One main attraction was Dance and Were Selected On their dancing c in talents. Another attraction was the ' 'Disco Cake Walk of the Kitten Kadettes. 'The more favorite e booths were those that tortured r teachers: the Mat Maids' Dunking Stool, Drama's Shaving Cream Pie 'Throw, and CLOC Club's Sponge Throw. ' ' Action booths included Key Club's jacob's Ladder, Cheering 's ' 'Basketball Toss , ' ' and Auto Club's ' 'Car Bash. ' ' First prize for best decorated booth was the jtmiors' ' 'Marriage Booth, 2nd was Drama's, 3rd was Art's Spin Art Design. The Juniors' ' 'King and Queen' ' voting and MECI-IA's Mexican Food were big money-makers. The fun and success was accompanied by candy apples, pizza, fudge, cotton candy, and snowcones.
